Mission Card: Key Positions

By VAYASAN, in Rules

Am I missing something?

Starting with the Blue player, players alternate placing objective tokens on the battlefield until 3 tokens have been placed or no more tokens can be placed. Each toke must be on a pc of terrain that is completely outside all deployment zones.

So...if im right, blue places 1 token right outside his deployment zone...

Red does same near his own.

Blue does same again with the 3rd, leaving red player close to 1, blue player close to 2. Blue can even just put both tokens next to each other unless theres something stopping them and just piling all their units in defence on them?

How is this a fair battle? Am I missing something here?

You are reading it correctly, it's an asymmetric objective. It's the one objective card with a clear advantage to blue player.

Aside from this objective card, I don't see any benefit to blue player. I would rather have final choice on scenario-building and 2nd deployment as red player.

the blue player can only be certain to have this mission if it's in the rightmost (is that even a word? ) position and they use both their choices on the objective cards. that means the red player has a lot of influence on the game with the other 2 choices, with deployment probably having the biggest impact. it evens out quite nicely, even though there is still some advantage for the blue player.

if that mission is not in the rightmost position, the red player can always eliminate it.

Still a bit baffled by it as somebody who has just done the LTP battle a few times and is now expanding to reading the full rules.......dosnt it still mean it will end up on he 'far right' 1 in 4 times, so 1 in 4 it will appear (more or less) and 1 in 4 fights are balanced for the blue player?

Just seems odd? There isnt even a rule saying it has to be so far out of the deployment zone, just 1" would do it(so long as there is terrain)

if you think it's such a great advantage build smaller armies and be the blue player. ;)

Yeah, 1 in 4 times it will be in the far right. But as noted, blue player spends both options eliminating the other two objectives. So red player has full say on the rest of the scenario. Maybe make sure that Limited Visibility or Rapid Reinforcements is used so that you can get your troops up into position to snipe their objectives? Maybe the shape of the deployment zone will help (is there an area of the table that is less dense in terrain?).

Noticed this after playing a game. We house ruled it that the last token must be placed on a piece of terrain that’s at least distance one from the blue player deployment zone.

Seems FAR more sensible to me. Just frustrates a rule is crying out for a house rule right from the off.

When I read the card I had to double and triple read it to make sure I had it right while thinking...er...how is that balanced. Stuck out like a sore thumb imo

As @Dosiere said. It is at the end of the game, not at the end of each turn.

After 6 rounds it really does not matter where the tokens are. It is more a question how many unit you have left on the field.

i would worry more about a list with 10+ units on this mission, and not about red or blue player. It will be really hard to kill this many units and claim the victory tokens in the end.
It does not matter how much you killed, if he has one more victory token, you loose.

But surely somebody who has two tokens on their base line...has more actions available for blasting away from some kind of cover rather than charging forward over 6 turns to make sure they even have a chance of winning.

Blue player wont even have to TRY and move to take anything.

This is where TOs setting up terrain prior to the event will have an influence. They can make it so one side doesn't have an advantage in terrain such as that.

If you're doing competitive terrain, remember that you do terrain before defining the battlefield step.

It also doesn't score until the end of game and the player with the most unit leaders in contact scores it.

Got my first full game in over the weekend and this was the Objective card we played. I was the blue player and set the two tokens as close to my deployment area as possible. Guess what....I lost the game.

As @Tokra said, scoring doesn't happen until the end of the game. My opponent had more units left than I did so he was able to get more Unit Leaders on the terrain than I was. Notice, this Objective says that Unit Leaders score, not just Trooper Unit Leaders. This means that AT-STs, AT-RTs, T-47s, and 74-Z can count towards scoring.

That's not so simple in practice, because the deployment map is unpredictable at the time when terrain is set up. For the time being, we'll just have to deal with it, and hope an FAQ will at least force the objectives to be separate from each other.

Dealing with it means making it top priority to avoid the mission as a Red player, or playing with wholehearted aggression and steely resolve in the 25% of games where you can be forced into playing it :D

You can't just take one isolated component of the game and say it's unbalanced. Vader is stronger than Luke, but his cost balances it. This card has an initial advantage for blue, but red controls deployment and conditions, not to mention that defending an objective can be tougher than attacking.

Or maybe you're right, and you should build an army tailored to win this objective and enjoy going undefeated :)
