But remember, the weapon keyword : ion 1, applies to the dice pool... so a lucky blaster rifle Crit is enough, as long as they are firing at the same target at the same time as the ion gun.

If one lucky crit gets through, it's still just 1 evade roll. So you're essentially paying 32 points for 1 dice roll. On top of that, the Ion gun has to be tapped. Having used them a couple times, I'm not sold yet.

Yeah i dont like the ion weapon. It needs to be exhausted since Ion has the potential of being ridiculous if FFG isnt careful, but i think it should hit harder as a result. Gatling gun all the way!
(that, or be cheaper, but i think that might lead to it being easily spammed which goes right into the ion being too good territory)

The Z-6 is so much more useful. It's cheaper and it mows down troopers. But I want to experience what the proponents of the Ion Gun are experiencing; I've not had any luck with them and the more I read about them, the worse they seem!

The only down side is the +10 cost and exhaust. Otherwise they are equal. Average damage is the same. Z6 spikes higher, but Ion is consistent and has Impact.

To experience them as described, take at least 2, keep the squads close together and in cover if possible, and send them both after the same vehicle.

When the target is a Weiss-powered ATST, the first ion hit is an annoyance, but the second is a disaster.

I will give it a shot, but that tactic still seems to suffer from my initial critique. That is to say, you're relying on 1 crit per unit.

But the Impact 1 is going to essentially guarantee that 1 crit per unit against armor. The Z6 is going to cross it's fingers and hope to get even 1. Can the AT-ST defend against that 1 crit? Yeah, but it would've done that against the Z6's crit, too, if it got one .

What kaffis said. One hit will generally do the job, thanks to Impact 1, and it can be done by any of the dice in the pool.

I wouldn't go as far as to 'essentially guarantee' it, since the hits can be blocked by cover (rare for ATSTs but always on for bikes), but Impact 1 improves your chances dramatically.
