Deflect longevity

By Jacen007, in Rules

Does deflect only last for the single attack in which the dodge token was spent or does it last for the rest of the round?

Its only for when you spend a dodge token.

I agree, but have run into two people so far who believe it lasts until the end of the round. What would be your argument? I said FFG would call out specifically if it lasted more than the one defense, but that didn’t convince them.

It's when you spend a dodge token, "when" being the operative word. It fuels the deflect. If he wants to deflect a new attack, new dodge needed. Ask them why they think it doesn't last the whole game by their logic.

They are wrong. Nothing in the rules says it lasts longer, like you said. You have to spend a dodge token to gain the benefit, and since there is a spend dodge token step for every attack, you have to spend a dodge token on each attack to gain Reflect.

PG 24

While a unit that has the deflect keyword is defending, if it spends a dodge token, any defense surge () results are converted to block (?) results; additionally, if the attack is ranged, the attacker suffers one wound for each surge () result rolled by the defender during the “Roll Defense Dice” step.

The defender must spend a dodge token to gain the benefits of the deflect keyword. Spending this dodge token cancels one hit (?) result, as normal. The defender may spend additional dodge tokens to cancel additional hits; however, doing so does not improve or add to the benefits of the deflect keyword.

Granted, you can absolutely get multiple dodge tokens a turn with the appropriate orders or Force powers, so... Luke can get up to four if he's hanging out with Leia. (Return of the Jedi, Take Cover from Leia, Force Reflexes, and a Dodge action)

That can equate to Deflecting on 4 attacks.

I would ask them where it says it last the entire round.

If the advice from those above doesn’t convince them, you could try arguing that you think deflect lasts until the end of the game. And then when they tell you that’s ridiculous, you tell them there is just as much evidence to support that interpretation.

Direct them to the language on timing: While a unit that has the keyword is defending. Once that first attack is done, the unit isn’t defending anymore.
