Custom Investigators

By Morgaln, in Fan Creations

Thank you, Julia, for the reply. It's always nice to get feedback on an amateur's creations. As per your suggestion, I changed it to once per turn, and I've also gave him more spells and less unique items, and here is my first attempt at some personal stories to go with him:

Hokay, my goodness I made a difficult task hard with uploading those files. But I think I did so successfully.

Obviously the pass condition is pretty good, but I'm thinking not too good, as 15$ is a lot of money, and you could buy 2 spells and a unique item with it on your own. This just speeds up the process and gives him a unique item for free.

Any thoughts? Is it too overpowered?

And oh goodness I just realized I didn't change the images on the personal stories. Such a noob mistake, apologies.

Hi Mustard,

thanx for the PS cards & the reworking of the ability. I think the Unlock power is still umbalanced: my suggestion is "once per turn, he may discard one spell or one unique item to gain 2 clues and 1 sanity"; the way you changed it, doesn't really change his ability: instead of discarding one spell in the Upkeep and the other one in the Movement phase, he can discard 2 of them in the Upkeep and gain 4 clues. Which is - in my vision of the game - too much, simply because you're allowed to trade items! So everyone could pass him items to generate clues at the highest ratio in the game! Besides, discarding 1 spell to gain 2 clues is quite similar to how the Visions card works, and you can't use Visions more than once / turn. So my advice is still the same, allow him to use this ability only once per turn, and only to generate two clues.

As for the PS... I like the idea of Titus collection :-) but probably it's still to be balanced a little. The average value of a Unique item is - IIRC - 6 dollars, and you can buy a spell for 5 dollars. Keeping 2 unique items & 2 spells is equal to 22 dollars. If you pay 15, then it's a much greater reward than the cost. You should probably lower this to something like: "spend 15 dollars, and draw 3 spells and 3 unique items, keeping one of each". In this way you have a media of 11 dollars worth of stuff, and the 4 extra dollars is a good price to draw 3 and choose. Outbid! is ok, I think.

Hope this helps!

I know this thread is about Custom Investigators but I wanted to give a shout out to everyone to say how cool your creations are. I just picked up AH a couple weeks back so I'm not ready yet to enter the world of Custom Investigators yet. But I have a few ideas in mind based off of some podcasts I listen to and books I read. But will be seeking lots of advice when I decide to try.

I whipped this up on Strange Eons. Kolchak just seemed like a good choice.

You're right. Good choice for a character. But something's not right with the resolution of the picture. Can't see it.

Stupid IE crashed while I was trying to fix my post. Here's Kolchak the Night Stalker. NightStalker1.jpg

I was watching the retro channel on TV, and then, this happened.

MacGyver

Hm...seems like his Lore skill ought to be higher. I know that's partially for spellcasting, but it's really a "knowledge" thing overall and Mac is definitely portrayed as incredibly knowledgeable (I would argue that if AOs and such did exist in Mac's universe he'd certainly have studied up on them as much as he apparently did for everything else in all creation ).

I might actually suggest making the improv a Lore check instead, since while it was technically luck that he found all the items he needed, he's usually portrayed as using his brilliance to put everything together (and Lore is a better representation of that than Luck). I know that looking at the show it seems like Luck that everything's there, but I think the intent was more that he found things that naturally would be somewhere around and that he just could figure out a good use for: so more about intelligent use of items rather than luckily finding the perfect thing.

Heh...now I want to see ones for Ernest Pratt/Nicodemus Legend and Colonel Jack O'Neill so I can have a 3-investigator, all Richard Dean Anderson game.

In Arkham Horror luck also covers perception type rolls so it could feasibly be seen as him being perceptive enough to find other stuff he can use to modify his existing items.

This one was by request...

And if you remember the old movie The Private Eyes , with Tim Conway and Don Knotts, these will be right up your alley...

Or, if you want a more 'wholesome' game of AH...

A long time character of mine since I found out about some of the pre-Greek beliefs of Medusa:

Terra Black existed first as a City of Heroes character "Medusae" and has been used in a couple other incidences.

Terra-Black-Front-Face.png

Her sneak is low because she doesn't really know very well how to hide what she is, she can sort of soften her scales and pale the color so that from a distance it looks like she's pale-skinned with dreadlocks, but that's about it.

Her Will and Luck are high, because in all versions, Terra's biggest advantages are willpower and charisma. Her Lore is weak because her teaching amulet tends to be very not-user friendly. She DOES start with a spell to represent something she learned from the amulet about her powers, but unless she gets a Lore skill, she's unlikely to be doing much with it. The clue tokens represent random visions she's gotten from her amulet (the Jewelry).

The Medusa's Mantle represents the fact that Medusa is believed to be both a source of healing and harm. And "Not So Ordinary" is because her inhuman heritage is already triggered, she just happens to be from one that is hostile/benevolent on an individual basis.

Obviously, she's not really devoured here, but spending all her focus on stalling the old one. This represents that she has come fully into the Mantle such that it will be quite some time before someone successfully takes her head. Also, the beauty, think Tolkien, the greater the good, the greater the beauty, the greater the evil, the greater the ugliness.

Either some other gorgon, of the evil variety, is now Medusa and operating against the investigators, or Terra's head is simply being used as a focus of power.

hmm...I gave her a -1 penalty for the ability, may think that's too harsh now...which would let me put her Lore up to 4 so that she could at least be a credible gate-closer.

Found a cleaner way to do the character:

Terra-Black-Front-Face-3.png

In this case, Heal and Wither are natural abilities. I thought about giving her other-world travel abilities given that the Medusa was supposed to be the mediator between worlds...but other spells can simulate the same thing....

You should phrase the first part of her "Not so Ordinary" power as:

"When Terra makes any Horror check or skill check that can result in a loss of sanity, add +1 to each die you roll for purposes of checking for successes (i.e., a roll of 3 becomes a 4, etc.)"

For fans of the Nobody Dies fanfic

alternate version

whoops, sanity and stamina flipped

and because I'm still playing with the new toy (sorry to bug y'all)

The ancient ones in this case (included with the characters) are actually overarching plots since all the characters from this fanfic have mostly upgraded to reality bending levels.

Hey, all -

I picked up a copy of Arkham Horror a couple weeks ago, and my friends and I are really enjoying it. I found out about Strange Eons here and we set about making new characters. I'm looking for some feedback and evaluation, and please be brutally honest - we're looking for balanced characters we can use alongside characters out of the box.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the double post, guess I linked them wrong in the last post.
