I think the best that might happen is demo games at local stores.

I have mostly seen prerelease events for trading card games, as the company can control how much product is released (each entrant only gets say 6 booster packs of the new product), and the cards are playable right out of the packaging. An unassembled miniature game doesn't really work, since people need time to at least assemble models, let alone paint them.

Edit: And how do you limit the product? The closest to a "prerelease" would be like how Armada released the starter with a decent gap before enough expansions to field a full Fleet.
