EPISODE 5 - Creative Characters

In this episode of The Dice Pool Podcast we continue our exploration of character creation with the mechanical process of building a character, filling in the character sheet, explaining stats and attributes, linking the process with the creation of other characters in a group and fleshing out the start of a campaign as part of that process. We even create a few characters live! We also "wolf" down a listener question, so be ware - or is that 'were-' - and much, much more. Don't forget to rate and review the podcast.

Great podcast! Keep up the good work. I like the way you explain the rules with example. I am looking forward into more liveplay, but, maybe, in other setting then medieval fantasy (maybe the Necromunda?).

I am really enjoying this podcast. I believe I’ve learned more about the system by listening to the podcast than by reading the book! Well done all!

We will have our Setting Sheet available later tonight and the full document is still a little way off yet...but it will be soon.

EPISODE 7 - Setting It Out

In this episode of The Dice Pool Podcast we wave a fond farewell and reminisce about the adventures of Star Wars: Dragon Squadron, the Star Wars Role Playing Game campaign that brought the hosts together. We feature a continuation of Episode 6 where we take the ideas we generated during our first Setting Roulette and show how an idea in the form of Night’s Edge can be formed into a complete setting. Great show with some insightful discussion and really useful clarifications and tips.

Would be good to do some dedicated shows as you suggested, such as on designing RPG campaigns (bouncing off the great response including how to design a campaign for any group (i.e. that is being shared for any group to use) and still design in ways to bring in player motivations even when it's a structured, story-set campaign). Plenty you could explore on the big topics. Maybe a series of shows on each of the genres (settings) and tones. If you can get a dev who worked on the specific one of the show even better (it may pay to be after the Terrinoth release and for the others to see what's next after Terrinoth first so it's at a time they CAN talk about it! And yes someone from the Terrinoth Genesys team would just be epic.)

One thought I had that could be a concluding show is often the best answer to 'so how do you run this idea as an RPG' is to play chef and look at all the ingredients you've got- often what seems like an unrelated element can give ideas for how to use another (magic for how to use what might possibly be called the force :) - that which a 'real' 'power of the mind' character may use which could be anything from a seer to a wizard to a Jedi....; super hero and epic fantasy hero tools can benefit each other and so on, I've found surprises such as a solution to a steampunk 'how to' working for a different fantasy 'how to'), thus a concluding show bringing those together on 'playing chef', asking what you want to do with your RPG as both GM and players, and finding the best answers within the system- which may be spotting that something from another genre or/and tone actually serves a need and can be re-purposed, bringing the ingredients together for a tasty RPG meal.

Did my first megagame at the weekend which setting wise was sort of War of the Worlds (if it was about mostly friendly aliens and only limited conflicts on Earth) meets Pandemic meets futuristic global politics and the tech race - these are awesome (it's like several boardgames and a multi-actor RPG where the players are the game/story/roles all going on at the same time) so please do something on megagames! On the dynamics of which, tens of people is great I'd say perhaps 50 max, but as the one I did worked really well, having read about ones with hundreds - I read of a 300 player one- that could be too many and too much chaos although I've not done such a crowded one to know.

Megagames are an example too of custom gaming, itself a growing trend, reinventing stuff into new often weird and wonderful stuff (the disease cure research in this game was a code cracking system inspired by Mastermind), pretty much every new KS game with a prior game from the same developer gets the 'will there be a crossover' question and questions about alternative gameplay styles 'will there be co-op, pvp, an RPG...' (often there already is in the stretch goals or optional extras), and the Genesys discussion is also showing that people increasingly like mixing things up bringing different games and systems together so perhaps exploring this evolution of gaming that players are exploring. But if you call it 'thinking outside the box' it might be time to run a combat encounter.

I’ve downloaded it from iTunes so just give it a couple of hours to autopopulate. Sorry for the inconvenience though.
