EDIT: Scorpion vs Lion in the finals for Emerald Championship. Bayushi Aramoro vs. Akodo Toturi.

Result... eh, I won't spoil it in the OPENING friggin' post.

Haven't read yet, but... wow guess they got that championship going sooner than expected. Wonder if the 5 cost neutral is coming in pack 6 and it's gonna be the emerald champion? That would be pretty awesome!

ADD: I can't help myself, I'm loving this Toturi and Kaede thing going on. On the one hand I feel like they're going to be unbelievably adorable together. On the other hand, I feel like they're being set up for some horrible tragedy.

Akodo Toturi exp hype.

Now with the Imperial trait.

This is Rokugan, sir. EVERYONE is being set up for some horrible tragedy.

Well last time they did not even get married until he had been Emperor twice, kidnapped, tortured and driven mad by the servants of the lying darkness. Then he committed seppuku.

Am I the only one disappointed that this was decided in the fiction instead of as a result of a tournament?

Don’t get me wrong, liked the story, but I really thought they would keep the appointment on hold until the next cycle to have it defined by which clan would win a Kotei...

I was really hoping they wouldn't personally. I like the tournament story prizes so far, they've been meaningful but kept kinda small. Emerald Champ tournament being a story thing means they won't be replacing the emerald champ every time they want to do a tournament with a hefty decision like who's the top cop in Rokugan.

Instead we get the worlds decision to be whether some crane who may or may not be relevant is killed and the kotai have no story decision.

I fail to see how Doji Kuwanan isn't a big deal, considering he's such a big deal he's in the Core Box fiction.

He decided not to compete?

Do we even know if Kuwanan made it back to the capital yet?

The Koteis will determine who gets Toshi Ranbo as a Clan card.

I loved this fiction. Yojiro was great and honest. Toturi was great and clever. And we got a big shift away from the old canon.

I don't see the cause/effect relationship here: they could have linked it to a Kotei, and then never change the Emerald Champion again if they wanted. It's not a big deal, just a missed opportunity to increase the connection between story and players.

Back to the fiction, mum and dad are clearly fighting now and I fear that us Scorpions will have to take a stand for one or the other sooner than later...

I am pretty sure they are setting up the coup again.

I really hope not, I cannot understand why they would follow the beaten path instead of exploring new narratives

I'm very glad this wasn't a tournament result... because I recall, from the CCG days, the endless parade of Topaz Champions who wore purple, just because the TC always went down in an area with solid Unicorn players. Or how about the fact that despite supposedly usually taking it, we didn't have a single stinking Crane EC in the entire run of the CCG.

What seems to be a clear ploy on Kage's part to get Toturi out of the way of whatever he has planned for the Lion has paid off... but as Toturi got a chance to demonstrate here, he's sharp enough that overt manipulation is going to prove tricky.

I find myself wondering who the other competitors were, since we fast-forwarded to the final round. Earlier Toturi was worrying about the prospect of facing Kakita Toshimoko, but if Toshimoko did compete, he didn't make it to the finals. I'm not sure if that was a deliberate red herring, or the plans changed for how the championship would go between the writing of the stories.

Yes, shaming the Emerald Champion into roninhood/seppuku is probably somewhere not that far down the line...

I don't think they will do that this time. I think that instead of uniting the empire as a ronin warlord they would have him use his position as emerald champion to do that.

Wasn't the Emerald Champion during the Clan Wars a Crane? Also, I know people tend to think of him as a Crab, but uh... *COUGH, COUGH* Hachi.

As for Kage, seeing as Toturi's his star pupil I think the plan is to get someone with Kolat influenced training into a position of authority.

As far as we know, Kolat does not exist in the new setting. And ugh... Kage’s Kolat story felt so forced in the old setting.

Perhaps I should rephrase and say that never during the time players were competing for the EC did the Crane ever take it.

So...I've been wondering. Is Toturi going to step down as the Lion Champion? Seems like his duties as Emerald Champion are going to be time-consuming.

He wonders the same- most likely, this is a maneuver to place more of the day to day administration of the Lion in Tsuko's hands- Toturi's detractors are galvanized, while his supporters that we've seen (such as they are) tend to be blandly accepting- and intent on steering him toward the EC post.

Spoiler Alert!

Yojiro picks a seeker role.....

Go get him rabid Scorpion fanbois :P

Aramoro, the ninja, demonstrates his skill by cutting fruit into multiple pieces?

Snrk!! :D
