Hi everyone,
I had a thought the other ngiht about coming up with a system for character wealth and purchases that doesn't rely on the characters recording each individual copper that they own. It isnt an original idea being borrowed quiet blatantly from the indi game Burning Wheel written by the inspired Luke Crane.
Basically a characters attempt at purchases is done as dice roll. A character starts off with a wealth rating in character generation. My idea is that rating is used in game as a wealth/connection stat in game. When making a purchase a character rolls a number of normal(neutral) dice equal to twice his current stat. The stat can be increase with experience points just like it was a career stat for the character.
The stat then represent the characters money management, income form other sources(investments, family etc) contacts and that sort of thing.
The difficulty of the roll is dependant on the cost of the item, its rarity etc and would be determined by the GM.
Possible difficulties:
less than 1 silver o difficulty
between 1 silver and 1 gold 1 difficulty
1 - 4 gold 2 difficulty etc.
If the base difficulty is 2 or more less than his base stat then the GM may rule that no role is necessary and the character gets the purchase.
When a character makes a purchase his stat may be temporarily lowered depending on the base difficulty and possible bane/ chaos star results.
Success meant the item is purchased. Failure means the purchase isnt available or the character just doesn't have enough cash on hand/no one has it etc. He get back the stat investment above.
If the item is 1 less than the characters wealth stat he temporarily decrease his stat by 1. If it is the same he lowers it by 2 etc. The lowest he can go would be 0.
2 boons means he gets a stat point back.
2 banes means he looses a stat point. If this puts his stat points at negative then he is treated as having failed the roll. It is possilbe to temporarily loose a point even if you dont get the purchase ( bribes, annoying contacts, pick pockets!).
Treasure would be given to characters as bonus fate dice that can be used and discarded on a roll. My thought would be that it would be fair for a character to add any of these dice after the initial roll
This is a rough idea at the moment with all difficulties etc to still be properly worked out.
Any thoughts/ feedback?
