Playing around with stats

By Lucas Adorn, in WFRP House Rules

It sometimes bothers me that many sytems don't support agility based warriors as much as strenght based ones. This got me thinking about using the 9 stats from Dark Heresy. Weapon skill, Ballistic skill and Perception added.

Adding these three skill wont really make a difference to any of the current action cards and at the same time it would solve a problem with too high starting stats and also give some more diversity to weapon training.

So weapon skill would be a stat on par with strenght and int etc holding the following skill groups: Ordinary, Great Weapons, Polearms, Unarmed, Flail, Fencing, Staff/spear, cavalry and parry (and any other the GM see fit). Each skill group holds the specific weapons as specializations. E.g. Ordinary has long sword, dagger, mace, hammer etc and cavalry has lance and sabre and so on.

Ballistic skill would be similar and basically have the different skill groups that the weapons are seperated into.

Perception would gain the Observation and Magical Sight skill groups taken from intelligence. I did this because I think it seems fit that even unintelligent persons/creatures/animals can have sharp senses without being very clever at all. its instinct.

Starting stats would be like this:

humans, dwarfs, HE, WE

WS: 2, 3,3,2

BS: 2,2,2,3

STR: 2,3,2,2

To:2,3,2,2

Ag: 2,2,3,3

WP:2,2,2,3

Int:2,2,3,2

Fel:2,2,2,2

Humans can choose one stat to increase to 3. The other races get three raised stats and start with 25 creation points whereas humans start with 30. this creates a character with a few stats (1 or 2) of 4 and a few (1 or 2) with 2 and the rest with 3, if you choose to limit your characters to max 4 starting stat at creation. This also has the benefit of making all monsters a bit more challenging without having to change either the dice system or the monsters themselves (tho I expect most GM's to do that anyway, at least with 'named' ones)

Its pretty simple and somewhat 'balances' out a lot of the issues that people have discussed on the forums lately. And this allows for a skilled warrior with low str and high ag.

The only card I have found that needs a slight ajustment is the nimble strike where it should say: 'This attack uses Agility instead of strenght to calculate damage dealt' Instead.

Try it out and let me know your thoughts.

p.s. This would also give a bit more diversity to the 'bland' careers which some people have a problem with.

Why not this is relatively interesting and logical.

As an alternative ( in order to reduce the many skill groups) you could just have a melee weapons group and a ranged weapon group that is similar to the current weapon skill and ballistic skill groups.

Depends on how much detail you want to go into.

While your idea is quite nice, and should work fairly well I don't really agree that it's impossible to make a agi-based fighter. Using a fast weapon and having the Nimble strike action card lets you attack using Agi (for both dice pool and damage) almost every turn (you need one boon to lower the cooldown). There are other action cards that do attacks using Agi but I can't remember them right now.

I did not say that it was impossible. Only that it is not supported as well. Most of the agility based action attack cards have severe penalties or high recharge rates. With weapon skill not being based on strenght you can have the same kind of attacks for agile warriors. Of course they wont do as much damage with a lower strenght and thats why they should get better defence for higher agility. Perhaps with this suggested house rule: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_foros_discusion.asp?efid=166&efcid=3&efidt=258215

But we will have to see where the active defence cards will go to in higher rank play. Perhaps they will reward highly agile players with extra defences.

Agility warrior = defensive quick warrior

Strenght based warrior = aggressive high damage warrior

made a first sketchy quick character sheet using your ideas and 9 basic stats.
Still need to work on textures and details and make it way better. Rushed this sheet during lunch time....
