Carolina Krayts is the best X-Wing podcast

By SaltMaster 5000, in X-Wing

Good times at past times today... finished on table 8, but missed the cut. Good luck Zack. So many Gunboats... all of my games except 1 had Gunboat(s) w missiles in them.

Edit: Listener 4 helped a ton... thanks guys

Oh, sorry good luck to you too and any other Krayts playing.

I thought I was sly and packed in targeting synchronizer on FCS Quickdraw to bypass stress messing with Gunboats’ ability to shoot and swapped one harpoon for a homing to help handle Defenders, aces, evades on Ghosts, etc... never ran into anyone trying to stress anything and had 1 match with a Kanan... so much for me calling the meta <_<

Advanced Optics on QuickDraw would have really helped in retrospect (and I knew that but completely thought someone flying Imperials or Wookies or Lancers would bring something to stress to screw with actions... in fact, playing my games, someone doing that would have been a nightmare for almost all of my opponents).

Are trying to say you won't be screaming incoherently on Friday and Saturday? Because I'm not sure I believe you if you are.

Ok so i was wrong on Friday, my entire milwaukee group made the cut so i came in screaming and hugging all of them. I don't care how I do today, we've put in so much work as a team I'm calling it a win already.

Went 4-0 with Wedge-Cracken-Nym. Then discovered that I have a blind spot for trajectory flung bombs and collapsed. Missed cut. I need to play against that a bit. Still content by the 4-2 run with less than a dozen reps on the list prior to showing up.

As a note though - I'm not good enough to be a Krayt. Just trolling along in the slipstream, picking off stragglers.

Being a krayt isn't about where you live or how you place. It's about what's in your heart. Which should be nothing and also entirely disrespect.

I can respect that. Oh dang it.

WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME FOR FOUR ROUNDS

I ended up similar to you. 4-0 start, lost to William Haigwood on stream round 5. Then lost to Nicholas Torbin in final round and finished 23rd at 4-2. Both really close games overall. For the moderately limited time I had with the list, I was really happy with how I did. I've got 2 more regionals to go to make a top cut which is my goal this season.

Did any Krayts get beat by that sexy double Resistance Sympathizer list?

I play him (William) tomorrow right away. I will try to avenge you

Zack’s the best, Twitch chat is terrible.

I avenged you, then my next opponent avenged someone else

I'm not sure Chris's statement about being able to make the cut with only dialing reasonable moves being false is true (I know that line is a true-false trainwreck, but you get the idea)

I've just came back from my first regional, and I mindlessly jousted/conceded to go eat all day long, and I went 5-1, and then made top 16.

Just being reasonable definitely won't win the event, but it made the cut.

Or is this that thing where all of my lists are statistical jousting traps designed to burn everything to the ground (but don't look like they hit *that* hard if you don't know the math)? Did I just bait people into making bad choices?

Or did constantly listening to the Krayts help me git gud, and my expectation of "Reasonable" is actually very good moves?

Either way, thanks to Gold Squadron and Pastimes Games for hosting a great event! I'll be sure to show up and dump 400 promo cards on this regional again next year.

I’m almost completely sure the context was if that is how it turns out, you have a good list.

I’m convinced you could occasionally hit a cut with some variance swings your way by not really making many mistakes and having a decent list, but consistent cuts take a good list and properly outplaying people, at the regional level.

Also, having a list that jousts super well is a strong choice, because a very large group of people are just going to joust you anyway.

Were you the guy playing miranda/low/stressbug on stream? Congrats on a great tournament.

I don't think a lot of people do the math, @Kaptin Krunch. I don't know what you're flying but I win a lot of games (in the past few months) simply because people incorrectly choose to fly exactly where I want them.

VI, FCS, LWF, Optics QD

2x HLC, LRS, Linked, Crack Rhos.

The 'wrong place to be' was "anywhere in front of me" as the Rhos delete everybody.

Were people seeing the list and then assuming that since I didn't have Harpoons that they could joust me?

I also clearly was not a master of my own list, as game 6 I realized how I should have been flying all day with the Gunboats.

Reasonably tough ships. Nice sustained fire. Good accuracy. Strangely lacking in munitions... Yeah, I expect some people just went in head on and threw dice at your ships hoping they'd go away. I would expect though that the later rounds people started to be a bit wary about coming in head on.

Curious. What did most people target first? Instinct tells me to shoot at Rho gunboats unless I though I could delete QD in a single salvo. QD is a nightmare later on, but those gunboats if flown loosely seem pretty solid. I'm sure my instinct is wrong but...

Your description of how you would fly pretty much confirms it then- I managed to get that same perception of math vs reality of math going again that I had back in wave 7/8 of 5 Omegas with WG and crack.

Its part of all our X-Wing DNA. The first time people use the Core Set mostly everyone lines up goes straight at stuff shoots at it and then k turns.

We all have the same basic instinct still imbedded in our memory tree of failed or successfull X-Wing decisions.

"What if I just point at the other guys ships and shoot laser dice? That could work right? It totally worked a bunch of times before. Ok yep lets do that!"

Several thoughts: 1: Is wedge back?

2: Most people don't tend to think about upgrade card and modification math. In other words, a Three die focus shot vs. a four die unmodded shot. this comes up all the time with expose, and also with boost. This is also probably what contributes to the idea of "Just joust it" Happens with gunboats, and also lots of secondary weapon stuff.

3: Should I just take as many red dice as possible for final salvo? Is that the best strategy?
