My Rebel heart actually wants the hard hitting BWing like Braylen Stramm....but my Rebel brain is telling me Lowhhrick.

Ridiculously wiped out, but I've had some time to decompress. Highlight and lowlights of GenCon!

Highlights (in no particular order):

  • Meeting everyone! Some folks for the second time, but one or both of us not knowing it.
  • @Brunas mistaking me for the guy running Loopin' Chewie. I really should have accepted the Krayt running shirt, then ran away at a dead sprint. I'd have felt I'd earned it.
  • @catachanninja's warm hugs and the likelihood that he'll never know my real name.
  • Playing a list I love, absent of any of the cancerous bull in the meta, and doing well with it.
  • Getting the sweet, sweet 2.0 stuff

Lowlights (in a very specific order):

  • Getting paired another local in the first round of the cut (@Biophysical). Balls. There's a head to be hunted for the lone drop to skew the bracket.
  • Playing probably a day too much X-Wing. I wasn't going to miss out on either the 2.0 event nor the main event, but it chewed up a ton of my con.

If they can't catch you, they'll make you Krayt anyway to preserve on-top status.

Hey nerds. I'm looking at 2nd tier aces (definition: not Vader, Grand Inq., or a Defender, basically still really good, but not expensive or capable enough to carry a game as well as a tier 1 ace). I have identified 5 pilots:

Whisper

Duchess

Soontir

Maarek

7th Sister

They all do ace-like things to some extent (I'm loosely defining this as using reactive positioning as some part of their core competency, and can operate effectively independently), and they all have good looking build options from the low 50s to low 60s (i.e., they fit in a slot that doesn't fit Vader, Inq, or a Defender).

Am I missing any pilots that should be in this list?

Edited my loose definition of ace.

Why not? She may not be Tier 1, but I think she could have a niche in a squad that has a lot of reds and wants to be able to pull a power move once every three turns.

She's ok, but from what I've seen, in the crew carrier+miniswarm archetype, you want something that always works and increases your consistency, not something that does something janky every now and then but doesn't stay on for every single one of those crucial 2-4 rounds of the mid game, which is where these sort of lists really shine. I'm thinking here of my experience flying Crack Dealers (which is for those who don't know 2 Crack/FAA X-Wings, 2 Snap/Crack A-Wings, and an OpSpec AP-5) both days of the NA Champs this weekend.

Sloane, Cienna, and a number of the other Imperial crew seem a lot more useful in this sort of archetype, so Rebels might not have the same sort of list in second edition. Which is annoying because they're a blast to fly.

How did flying that list go btw? I didn't see how it did while I was there spectating from time to time.

Oh, I didn't see you! Too bad, I'd have liked to say hi!

Went pretty good!

Went 5-1 day 1, including beating Bob's Builders as the clock ran out by 5 MOV, tabling a very well flown Asaaj/Nym that ended up going to top 16, and tabling a Ghost/Fenn that also went to day 2.

Day 2 I lost the first game due to horrific dice luck, but I was glad to be free of 1.0 and have the rest of the day to do other stuff. :)

All in all I very much enjoyed myself because I felt like I was really thinking about my games, and although Snap Shot and Op Spec don't exist anymore, flying all those arcs was good practice for 2.0!

I think Redline at least partially fits this criteria now?

I know they aren't I5 which seems to be your cutoff here but i think there are some I4 pilots that fit the mold.

  • Ved Foslo (new juno)
  • Major Vynder
  • Pure Sabacc (shield upgrade) ( 50 pts )
  • Countdown (crack hull upgrade) ( 50 pts )

Gunboats aren't technically ace like but they do a job of running the **** away for a turn or two or forever and returning to attack from out of arc. Slam can be about as reactive as it gets.

And Sabacc remains one of my all time favorite "pocket aces" in X-Wing simply because he makes people panic for no reason.

Countdown and Sabacc deserve some recognition at minimum for looking cool on the table before they get destroyed.

Even though Countdown's value goes way down the higher ship counts get above 2.

Today's terrible list is brought to you by poor choices:

Darth Vader — TIE Advanced 70
Supernatural Reflexes 12
Fire-Control System 3
Proton Rockets 7
Afterburners 8
Ship Total: 100
"Pure Sabacc" — TIE Striker 44
Shield Upgrade *
Ship Total: 50
"Countdown" — TIE Striker 44
Hull Upgrade *
Ship Total: 49

Speaking of pocket aces... here's hoping Valen Rudor in a TAP makes it back to second edition. Having a cheaper non-force TAP with higher initiative and more action economy than a Baron would be an awesome pocket ace.

Also what's nice about Valen in 1.0 is that people are sometimes scared to even shoot him because they'll just make his return shot deadlier!

I am very excited to fly HatchetMan 2.0.

If not imperial: Old Teroch, Guri?

There's only one faction that we care about, let's be real.

And Guri costs more than Fenn loaded out. I would not take her below 72.

I think Guri is legit even without the title.

The only factions people shouldn't care about has Luke in it. Imperial and Scum are both pretty strong. If Vader isn't moving last, Fenn is going to have a good time with him.
