Final Battle Report

Now With Gif Bat Rep Action

Spoiler Alert ( Crackshot HLC Gunboats Do Tons of Damage )

Gif is a great idea - I want to do similar with like vassal templates for where things moved so you can get a clear idea of how things moved for games. Wish I had a way to automate like a game recap from a replay

FINAL FINAL BATTLE:

Rule 34. Not only does fanart exist, but there is probably Trioculus porn too.

Step 1: get your kids to play x-wing

Step 2: reap the learnings that come from unlimited time and youthful obsession

Step 3: profit!

And I'm barely joking here. My 8 year old is one of the best sparring partner I can think of. He doesn't stick to preconceived notions and he's always there, begging to play one more game.

I spent a whole summer thinking I wasn't getting any better 2 years ago, because our matches kept being more or less even. Then we went to a kit tournament (his first) and finished 2nd and 3rd (he was 2nd, at 6 years old). That's when I realised that we were both honing each other's skills very finely. So, I agree that you need a team, whatever form that takes.

Listener 4 gave me the kick I needed to teach him about probabilities, just to make it rational instead of feeling based. Why just this afternoon he found our expose token and asked what it was, he got excited when I told him, then I had him run the probabilities of expose vs a simple focus token. A few minutes later (with the help of an excel file for binomial distribution stuff) he goes "expose sucks, the only thing it's better at is the 6% chance of 4 hits!"

Thanks Krayts :D

My son is 12 now, and I have had a similar experience. Especially with the part I bolded.

blasphemy.

We are in danger of page 2! Also, Reddit decided that Kylo should have a missile. I, for one, totally support this notion. I also suggest that the Tie silencer gets the follow unique missile upgrade:

empty missile tubes: Your action bar gains the Evade action. For the purpose of scoring, decrease the cost of this ship by the printed pilot cost. (Flavor text: We call these flex points).

It will be balance and total fair. there is no issue. FFG, why no Kylo buff? He no good.

You know what? You can make those missile tubes cost 10. Somehow we'll manage, I think.

Kylo should also be able to deploy Soontir before he is destroyed. Its only fair since they put him in a big card board box.

yes. keep all text though, kylo is bad and needs buff.

Yes, I didn't do ^ first because people can't accept their fate. the Silencer also get the unique title Deployable pod: before you are destroyed, deploy an interceptor of your Pilot skill or lower, equipped with any number of points, ignoring uniqueness rules. Kylow/Soontir + Soontir is how we bring back the imperial ace, that is totally dead.

(For real though, people unironically thought he needed a buff:

I was hoping someone would reply with that!

Now we just need a certain Miranda/Lowhrick appropriate gif about not being able to pass or something like that.

I did some soul searching after my frustration peaked two weeks ago and finally figured out why this game is not for me, personally, anymore.

I want to "live free, don't join". My preferred ships have always been small base primary arcs. An occasional reararc with stresshog, stressmule, strezra, or QD is the only deviation from that.
The few times where I played turreted ships was to be a sparring partner or to throw something on the table purely for fun. But I enjoy playing primary arc ships most, and that was what I always brought to tournaments.

Even worse, I prefer ships that punish mistakes. Not because they do so (even though I rationalize it and argue that the game is more fun if that is the case) but despite it.
A-wings, Interceptors, Vader, Inquisitor, Strikers, TIE swarms. High agility low HP, no regen and no Palpatine. That is why I jumped to Harpoons when they were released. Because they finally allowed me to compete again with ships I liked.

The other part is that I have most fun when I can be proud on my flying, my chosen maneuvers and my decisions. Winning or losing does not matter to me as long as I played a good game.
An obvious consequence is that fewer decisions decrease my fun. Lower importance and impact of maneuvering decreases my fun. And more stupid mistakes with catastrophic results decrease my fun.

Now take all three points together:
1. small based ships with primary arcs
2. ships that punish mistakes
3. liking good flying and choices, disliking mistakes

And with this go to a long day tournament. More fatigue, more mistakes, fewer shots and more boom of my own ships. It is obvious why this is a bad mixture.
Seriously, my respect for those of you who fly high risk ships (where decisions and maneuvers matter) well for 9+ games is through the roof!
I have realized that I am doing so, so much better when playing online, at the store or at home, with just 1-2 games at a time. And I routinely lose games at the end of a tournament, no matter who I'm playing against.
That is all on me though.

Enter FFG and the way this game has changed in my opinion:

List building got more important, reducing the importance (and even amount) of maneuvers and decision points.
Turrets+ got more important/prevalent, reducing the importance of maneuvers.
Point fortresses got more important, at least partially contributing to increased game length.
Two ship lists with turrets and bombs got more important/prevalent, punishing mistakes on high agility arc dodging ships harder.

There are definitely more points to be made, but to make it short:
The trend as I see it is towards lists that are less taxing for players, and specifically towards elements I do not enjoy.

Which brings me to possible solutions:
1. Just try to enjoy the new game and join. There are interesting elements and how bad can it really be?
2. Burn everything and never come back.
3. Something in-between, which is what I am going to do:

play missions, objectives, HotAC, or just 100/6 games at home and with friends, which is still tons of fun and covers the social aspect. The time stood still in a way, and there are no netlists. Arcs matter, maneuvers matter, and it's really fun!
play in online tournaments. This covers the competitive aspect and I can try lists that are too strong for our home "meta". And the games are spaced out so much that I can barely burn out by it. A game against what I perceive to be cancer for this game once every few weeks is fine. Fun, even! Going from one lothal fenn to the next on the same day is not.

This brings me to my last point: the online community.
Some of you are really great people, and I value reading your thoughts and input on my own. Great discussions, interesting ideas. I really appreciate you!
And then there are others. I mean. Holy ****. I know my weak spots, and I am too argumentative, too eager to call out what I think is BS. Too eager to correct others, and that is not a good trait. But the struggle is real!

Anyway. There are two points I want to make after all this:
First, thank you guys very much for being awesome!
Second, I will try to go to more lurking and less confrontational posts. I'll drop by every now and then, maybe throw graphs your way from time to time. But I doubt it to be honest.

But I will go and enjoy the SOS, where I am looking forward to lots of Hangarbay with 5 Awings as one or SnapJakeStrezra as other list. I hope to try one with a HSCP VI Strezra and an Opportunist Keyan, too. After that I am done with tournaments for the time being, and that includes interest in tournament results and metas.

So long!

@GreenDragoon I, for one, will be sorry to see you go. However, I do want to stress how much fun HOTAC can be if you haven't tried it. There is nothing like looking at the pilot abilities and trying to build the most broken / funniest thing you can. For example, what if you had the abilities of both Blue ace and Snap on an A-wing? you can be anywhere!

As for you lists, Wes with adapt down is PS7, and can set up the opportunist, you just need to ditch 3PO (Which is probably a bad call)!

Random off-topic question: Would any of the people in this thread want to try a Vassal HOTAC? I know most the Krayts consider themselves competitive, but I figure it may be worth a shot.

Vassal HOTAC sounds like it could be a lot of fun!

Tie Reaper has a sloop. X-Wing is saved.

Vassal Hotac is a lot of fun, I was lucky enough to play in part of one campaign of it once. My problem is my job's irregular schedule which keeps me from committing to regular meet up times/days.

I'd be willing to do a Vassal HotAC as well!

And @GreenDragoon, I felt like you were often one of the only people keeping the ****posters in line sometimes. The forums will definitely take a turn for the worse if you stop posting as frequently. Also, as a frequent Keyan player, I might suggest you use him with PTL, Lando, and Sensor Jammer. Super fun. Adv. Sensors is also sneaky good with barrel roll, although you want to make sure that you aren't doing a green maneuver, or you lose your stress focus token. And Stay on Target is very fun with Keyan if you have higher PS than other stuff. Just dial in a 2-k-turn every round.

Wait, what? How do you know this? Was there a leak somewhere that I'm unaware of?

Good luck @GreenDragoon. Hope you find your balance point.

Sorta on topic our lgs is now totally unplugged from the meta. No 100/6 in several weeks. It’s gone a long way to make things relaxed and fun again. Started a new HOTAC campaign, last tournament was a mercs rules and the next maybe another OT format. Maybe I’ll allow Uwings and TIE Strikers as an expansion this time...

I want to do an imperial campaign like HotAC, that always sounded like it'd be really fun.
