Carolina Krayts is the best X-Wing podcast

Trusting your dice is by far the best way to consistently beat Ghost/Fenn with any list.

As long as you throw 5 dice at Fenn from 3 ships at once you kinda dont need mods.

At least thats how I approach it. Hasnt failed yet.

It's dice. I expect the average but am mentally prepared for variance. Typically my reds roll high and my greens... not... This does not however hold true in all situations and I've had the reverse and no luck at all. Banking on dice alone means I've accepted that I've got no further say in the game and I'm just hoping to get lucky.

Now, I've actually put a fair bit of thought into this since I'm seriously considering taking these 4 Phantoms with me in two weeks.

  1. The game ends before I have time to get frustrated if things go badly...
  2. The game ends abruptly if things go well leaving me time to rest my brain... low PS cloak/uncloak with four ships is kinda rough over time.
  3. The Ghost is looking at ONE green at range 3 if I get arc. It doesn't take too much luck to draw down the shields and maybe I can pop a crit in.
  4. How many Ghost/Fenns will actually show up, anyway?
  5. If I take this list - I don't care what I place. Bottom tables, here I come!

As long as you understand your likely outcomes and manage expectations you'll be fine.

Sidenote, didn't canada already have a nationals with this prize kit? Are you getting another of the same or ious? Or is this how we'll find out what's in the 2018 nationals kit?

@Brunas where/how could I acquire an Inquisitor range ruler template? If I can, can it be another color other than white?

  • 2017 Nationals was... October? I should really keep that one a bit better in my head. I'll never do that well again.
  • 2018 Regionals (Toronto) was January
  • 2018 Nationals is March 16-18

No idea the prize kit for it...

This was a list that I saw years ago. I think the guy playing it called it "The sum of all fears".

https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1243620/tournament-report-27-09-14-sum-all-fears

It's very jousty. When you talk about not being able to run away from a big ship, if you have collision detector you can still decloak over debris and do a 4 forward. That's fast.

It's very jousty. I've melted both Assaj and Rey in two turns each - I don't care about your abilities! Eat Dice! By the by, good name for it. It very much is about intimidating your opponent and messing with their mind.

The effective 7 straight though, even through debris, cannot match a Ghost boosting up through the middle of the map. It just needs that range 3 band and it's dice rolling time. Four and five green dice go blank pretty frequently on something without autothrusters and more tokens. If I lose just one TIE Phantom it's 25 points I then need to kill, forcing the engagement. So... better to take my chances early and roll more red dice first before I lose them.

Edit: It's a terrible list. For those serious about winning - DON'T FLY THIS LIST

I was curious of everyone's opinions on how you classify lists into Tiers. When I played Magic competitively we classified them something like this:

Tier 1: Solid win rates (no < 50%) against the expected field (Top 5 lists from most recent professional event) with no obvious flaws/auto-losses (,>90% expected loss)

Tier 1.5: Solid win rates against the majority of the field (4/5 Top lists) with no obvious flaws/auto-losses

Tier 2: Solid win rates against the majority of the field (3-4/5 Top lists) with one obvious flaw/auto-loss

With that said, I am trying to put together my own criteria for X-Wing in order to help my team better prepare for Worlds, likely using meta-wing data. What criteria do you use to determine where a list should be tiered?

TL;DR: How do you classify lists into tiers when preparing for a tournament?

@LagJanson I am always a fan of laying down heavy fire. If you are going to be a star, you might as well burn brightly until you explode! I don't know if the Bounty is still on, but you could add a couple gunners, FCS, and Adv Optics to even out the dice. No one will notice the extra 36 pts I'm sure

I must Procure Prowess at typing, or would that fall under Collect Competence?
7 minutes ago, Brunas said:

Really? What was the other? I hadn't heard of anyone else getting any, haha. Not even obvious/blatant low effort posts.

I got one because I called someone a "low-skill **** (ter) that needs to Procure Prowess" in regards to them saying that Slam Bombing was fair and had counterplay.

Also, Git Gud, Procure Prowess, Aquire Ability, Earn Expertise, Collect Competence- any more you guys can come up with?

Not really sure. I have one, maybe, lying around the house that's the wrong size... They'll probably always be white, though maybe we'll eventually get a second run of them with 3 separate sections all labeled one or something?

I have the urge to run a Lambda (FCS/C.Droid), Upsilon (FCS/C.Droid), and Decimator (Vader/C.Droid).

tell me how wrong I am.

So long as you name it "Meat Sweats" you're fine. A good list name is as good as having a good list.

I'll check my random stuff mountain in my living room, I found the other ones there. I'll have to see of I can find another?

I did that to someones face once. They told me that triple K-wings could be avoided, and I was like "Oh **** no" then they quit X-wing, and also during this time sudo-cheated in HOTAC.

Oh yea dont get me wrong I get it. I dont depend on my dice for all of it or even most of it, when they fail...oh well it just helps me make up for other skill gaps I have. For me the bulk of the thought goes into staying out of Fenns arc since I almost always have 3 ships and 1 or 2 PS11s with a 2-3 pt bid. If one of them gets caught in arc...I still just throw dice at Fenn and prayer becomes that ships tactic.

I fully understand I might blank out on all the dice although I can usually get one of the shots from outside of Fenns arc to be modified and end up in good shape.

For me its just about accepting that Ghost/Fenn has an advantage that is probably a trap for my other games if I worry to much about it. I am still not really good at the game so I kinda prefer to just play to a bit of variance with the knowledge that I should be able to truly control the outcome of basically every other possible matchup in the meta besides Miranda/Low. When the red dice variance fails me thats on me so it doesnt bother me much.

Its the wrong approach but its a big part of what lets me continue to live free.

Basically if your not good at X-Wing, depending on variance to make up for the skill gap actually can be kinda liberating as long as you are aware its a personal choice to roll blanks?

Jesus yes.

I’m going to Green Bay this weekend, hope to see you Zack! If I can find two more gold Squadron Ys I’m gonna fly a meme list, but they have been on the boat forever.

If I don’t find them, I’m flying Autoblaster Ghost Fenn and you all can deal with it.

Threat/pleading: Green Bay get y wings in stock (or some one let me borrow two) or I’m going to Try Hard.

Also on the topic of the inquisitor-

With Rebels ending and hopefully all of the unbearable characters dying, would Krayt alt art cards of the characters dying be something people want?

I would say to benchmark it using some standard lists, fitting everything inside of 4 distinct tiers.

Start at Tier 1

Then if there's no way it could ever in a million years beat Ghost/Fenn, it's Tier 1.5.

Next, if Kylo Ren can sometimes solo your entire list, it's Tier 2.

If it can't beat a Crackshot TIE Swarm without some serious luck or mistakes by your opponent, it's Tier 2.5.

Then if it loses to four Rookie Pilots, you either need a significant amount of gitly gudage, or the list is Tier 3.

If somebody beats you with a list that consists solely of U-Wings and/or non-TLT HWKs, it's either time to switch hobbies to Loopin' Chewie, or your list is Tier 4.

Seems fair in the current meta.

@Kaptin Krunch - How much does a run of cards ballpark for? I'm curious what the ballpark pricing on pilot cards runs.

What are the cards being made of?

Man, that's tempting. I want a picture of Sovereign and/or the Disney story group telling the rebels characters they will end because the plot demands it.

Sorry - that was totally mangled communication on my part. Assume I know nothing about printing pilot cards (which is accurate.) I know that different materials exist, but that's about the extent of it.

While inflating the post count of this thread would be nice, I probably shouldn't spam it.

Also- @brunas

I'll be sending Target Lock hunger some stuff to use as prize support- Anything that should be sent to them in particular?

Awesome, thanks. I've already sent some of our older stuff - hotcops and palps, IIRC. Stuff that isn't it? The Rebel Fenns are super popular
