I played against it at LVO, it is a dope list but doesn't have big🍊 or big🟣 to cover up mistakes so I understand why people don't want to play it.

true!

There are different types of game design discussions. Some are innocent fun, some are rather annoying, few are interesting. Custom cards, future releases, points changes, banhammers/erratas, or faction/ ship / archetype analysis.

My favorite is this pattern:

OP: "Hey, I had this really cool idea about upgrade XYZ. [Very long explanation on how it works] I thought we could maybe cost it at 3pt or so."
Reply: "3 points?! Are you crazy?"
... and cue 2 page discussion on point costs.

Out of the 19 threads on page 1, there are 10 game design threads in a wider sense, counting gunboat and custom awings in fly casual. And they are not even that bad, we've all seen much worse I'd bet. I mean, I'm not in a constant bad mood, I feel great actually. I just think it's weird.
Imo the Awing thread is an example of innocent fun with a positive side effect, and the resistance assessment is an example of a game design thread that helps to understand available strengths and weaknesses, and accordingly helps to find good combinations with new releases/points changes. The poe principle led to really interesting nuggets in the pile that is 17 pages already.

you pick one list you want to play, and one list you think your opponent will just take a hard pass on?

This, but the one I think everyone will hard pass on turns out to be the one I actually want to play.

I imagine I just take 2 good things that can kinda not worry too much about match ups.

I really like the idea. I hate having to decide which one of the many, many things on the waiting list.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Miranda Doni, the wise? I thought not. It's not a story a 2.0 player would tell you. It's a 1.0 legend. Miranda Doni was a pilot, so powerful and so wise she could use the Force to influence the dice modification to create dice results... She had such a knowledge of the dice modification that she could even keep herself from dying. Dice modification is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. She became so powerful... the only thing she was afraid of was losing her power, which eventually, of course, she did. Unfortunately, she taught 1.0 players the power of dice modification, then those players called for her to be nerfed. It's ironic she could save her dice from failing, but not herself.

Traditional Hangar Bay usually has a stipulation about neither of the two lists can have the same unique pilots/upgrades, doesn't it?

Although, people will immediately get around that with generic lists. "My droid swarm has all generics, this one all have struts, the other one droid doesn't!"

"You can clearly see that this droid swarm is all using the brown paint jobs, while this droid swarm is entirely blue/black paint jobs. The difference is clear as day."

The current season of XVT (which is using this format) avoided the whole issue by prohibiting any duplicate pilots between the two lists, unique or generic.

Because I'd rather not be forced to allow Separatist players to have a completely blank board to play on, thanks.

I've got at least one friend who brings clouds for the same reason: hates droids, and doesn't want to give them a space to land.

What people end up hating is weird to me

He'd probably say the same thing. One thing that irks him about droids: for all the freak-out over Trajectory Simulator, Discord Missiles/Buzz Droids are cheaper and get to be launched with perfect information, and no one seems to care.

Now, I think they could probably use the old tappa tappa, being moderately annoying to try to deal with, but I don't hate them as much as he does.

Hate is a strong word.

I believe in bringing obstacles that are as punishing as possible to my opponent, and given their current power level at least one of my opponents at any given event is going to be a droid list. Therefore we give them obstacles they can't ignore and hate having to shoot through. And since the update, gas clouds are punishing enough for everyone else that I don't lose out that much in other matchups.

I haven't found gas clouds to be sufficiently punishing for A-Wings, Jedi, other small annoying opponents. It should probably be more of a "what beats my list" because if you have a good answer, then picking obstacles to counter doesn't make much sense.

why are you talking about design?

e:
why do you pick clouds = interesting choice handling the circumstances
why are struts legal = entirely irrelevant question about design. there's nothing we can do about it

I'm usually the one flying the A-wings, Jedi, and other small annoying opponents. 😛

And if I'm not, my list is mostly likely a blob of mid-initiative jank that will have an easier time bullying an ace than it will winning a joust against an unbroken droid formation. Ergo, gas clouds.

Since wave 4 in 1.0, I have always run asteroids, the big ones, regardless my list. I think great flying is the key to the game and the most fun.

instead of 200 points, lists are now:

rebels: 195
empire: 175
scum: 175
resistance: 190
first order: 190
republic: 185
separatists: 180

how close is this stupid method to making the top of the meta balanced?

I'd rather something like this:

  • Reb 205
  • Imp 185
  • Scum 185
  • Res 200
  • FO 200
  • Rep 195
  • Sep 190

Just seems easier to think about. When framed like this, I think it's probably not too off. Except Rebels. I'm not convinced Rebels are 5 points worse than Resistance.

Kills my builds that are not "aces". Which is basically all of them.

yeah, obviously its curved to only the strongest lists, which is why it's stupid but also keeps it concise

aiming deliberately to lower the power curve was intentional, for what its worth, which imo is too high right now

Is there really a 20 pt gap between Rebels and Imperial and Scum?
