Its genuinely fine though, people should unironcially do what they want and what makes them happy. Apparently extended is it. Thats ok.

what are the boundaries of getting this moved to off topic? X-Wing is a dead game so I'm not sure I can keep this thread alive while actually providing content

Hyperspace is the better competitive format. What do you expect when there are no competitive events?

Booms post is that in the minds of the masses the online events are just as competitive, and that they are doing extended because when given the option they would rather play extended

Yes and I disagree. I don't think they are, or are seen, as just as competitive. I've been in quite a few vassal leagues, XVTs, and even buy-in online tournaments and leagues by now. I disagree that they are as competitive because usually more creative (read: wrong) lists are played, to mention one criterion.

2 certainly seems like a not bad number. So many options to run with. I only have one, so it's Kestal, or I would have ventured down this road already.

Strengths.... um. It is cheap Ion for a handy ace control element and/or chip damage. See Y Wings, (mostly Rep), and Scyks.

Weaknesses. It's predictable and squishy. Unlike both Y and Scyk, it's not going to soak up any meaningful attention or be able to put itself in places that ask genuine questions. Which is why it's rubbish.

So I'm not sure it's really any good at all in the 2 filler, 2 ace archetype. You just go trade a minimal amount for them and then corral the aces, or totally ignore them. Either is probably fine, a lot of the time.

As an element of something more though, maybe neat....

Eh, like Green said I wouldn't put much mind into it.

First quarter was pretty much full HS territory, so now people are enjoying some other stuff, because why the heck not? X-Wing is pretty much in maintenance mode and after having to think all that time about HS lists for stores and SOS (which would have happened now) it's feels refreshing to throw in some extended lists just now for a change.

Let the people have some fun flying their broken Imperial Aces stuff for a while 😛

yeah, that. List building isn't an interesting game - list building being "interesting" directly detracts from the actual parts of the game that I personally like. Again, it's fine that people want list building to be a "skill", but it's not something I like being a big influence on the outcome of games.

It certainly doesn't help that the people who enjoy it play exclusively high initiative "aces" that are comically better than everything else in the game and pretend they're hard to play, but aside from being annoying that isn't that big of a deal.

It's not about list building, it's about embracing the broken stuff. Why do people cheat in single player games? Because sometimes it's just fun to play with something OP. As long as there is an actual competitive format, the ridiculous things in extended can have their spot. A dead hyperspace would mean a dead competitive X-Wing, and I'm not willing to let it go.

You sound as if everyone playing&enjoying extended would play high inititative aces when everyone else is miserable while palying?! My extended squads are half aces (FO/Imps) and half not (Rey, Sloaneswarm). All fun to play for an afternoon or day, definitely not fun in a highly competitive event.

Why don't we all take a break from the doom&gloom.

I mean, we're making sort of a broad generalization here, aren't we? I enjoy listbuilding, I enjoy that coming up with different lists is an interesting part of the game (and I'm also totally fine if people want to opt out of that part of the game and just netlist a known quantity, too). I fly aces sometimes, but I'll be the first to tell you that flying low-init ships is probably more difficult overall and requires more thought as to where the opponent is going, what their plan is, etc. Strategy decisions with low init lists are more critical and less flexible (but this too is a generalization!).

I think there are a lot of very different X-Wing players out there with different parts of the game that they favour, different understandings of what's strong/weak, easy/difficult, whether they like Hyperspace/Extended and why, etc. I enjoy my matches with pretty much all of them.

For me, and this is obviously very subjective, I just don't know that I feel a huge difference in experience between Hyperspace or Extended. There are probably more "wrong answers" in Extended, but ultimately if we're talking about people who want to play the top-end proven list, Hyperspace vs. Extended is really just do I want to play vs Boba (with slightly less variability in options) or vs Trip Aces?

I don't know. I feel like things are straying into shaming people for liking X or thinking X. Our game has enough challenges right now without sort of encouraging more tribalism. I know "Fly Casual" is probably a few waves behind us, but can't we at least aim for "DWYWM"?

Oh, I'm not trying to be doom and gloom. No, the aces are just an example of a silly problem with extended, not the problem. It's a tangent, at most.

The hyperspace vs extended "debate" is two-ish factions of people that drastically prefer different things from the game. That's OK! There's probably also only room for one of them as the community isn't large enough for two real competitive formats. That's also OK!

To be clear, DWYWM is where I have landed on this. Hyperspace is mostly non-existent now. Which again is totally ok! The people have spoken. The card combos won. Its fine.

All that said, I wont stop talking about how hyperspace has always been a substantially more fun version of the game for me specifically. In all its iterations. This is coming from a historically trip ace empire/fo player.

One other thing to note, I view Hyperspace as the better casual format to. Its not just a more focused competitive experience. I have very little interest in casual games of extended.

Yes, it's simply the better game. But well designed/balanced game is just one component to make something fun, and there is no point arguing that it is more fun. That's subjective. There is a point arguing that hyperspace is the better competitive format, where good balance matters.

e: anyway DWYWM. I think it's stupid to use a platform to coup-de-grace something I like. But I had a horrible night and lack of sleep definitely doesn't help, so I'm out.

I would be more on Team Hyperspace as of now if things were normal. It would be the end of Store Champ season and thus the highlighting of Wave 6, the neat prize support, and the culmination of exploring this rotation's limited format. But with 0 events, and thus 0 Hyperspace events, I feel that when I search for a Hyperspace game on Vassal, I'm stunting my opportunities to field a bunch of stuff in an already large game. Granted, there are always some online events, but I can't get into a 1-game per week format when what I crave is a day of a tournament.

Now that the inaugural Space Jam has demonstrated that not only can a single-day online event be possible, but organized to be a high-tier styled event. I'm all aboard with the idea (although I'm disappointed that it'll be in TTS for looking nice on stream as opposed to Vassal for streamlined gameplay) and hoping to join the next one. Given that its format is extended, that means I'm team extended. When it's safe for us to go outside again, perhaps by then it will be the next year's Store Champ first season again, in which case, you'll find me in fort Hyperspace.

My argument for hyperspace wouldn't be that it's about balance, and it would include that the format is more subjectively fun.

But in particular, it's more fun because it highlights the parts of the that X-Wing is the best at. Go-to example being that there's no reason that card games are bad, or that you shouldn't like card games. Card games are fun and lots of people like and play them.

X-Wing in particular just makes for a bad card game.

All online structured events are extended format and the majority community hasn't batted an eye. I've only seen about 1% of the community that are sad about it and wonder where hyperspace went.
