I didn't know you were one of my locals.

Upsides of bringing jamming beam:

  • you might find the weird edge case scenario where it's worth it.

Downsides of bringing jamming beam:

  • bringing the extra card means you thought you had your whole list but you forgot a card
  • jamming beam falls off the table inconsequentially, but also drags another card to the floor so it gets lost
  • wasted physical work in carrying around at least one extra card around all day
  • tempted to make bad decisions all day

πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”

I know you're sort of joking here, but it's not that hard to make the right decisions on taking a Jamming shot or not. I don't even think you even have to search for weird edge cases. The main question you worry about for using Jamming Beam is:

"Do I have a ship likely to take meaningfully reduced damage if I use Jamming Beam vs my normal attack?"

For a ship at Range 1 of its attacker, if you can jam off a lock or focus from the attacker, you're probably saving a point of damage. If that point matters to you more than doing a point or two of damage with primaries, then Jamming Beam is a good call. There are also offensive uses against reinforcing stuff, sure, but I think the main use will be preserving your squishier elements in bad situations.

When you guys talk about, and heckle, people using jamming beam on the next podcast, I'm going to feel personally attacked.

Maybe if you hadn't tried to steal a shirt from me at gencon, we wouldn't be at war!

Haha, of course. The question is basically, do those opportunities ever actually come up during a game. I'll keep an eye out during my games and see if all my ships had jamming beam, if/when I'd be firing it.

For 0 points, they don't have to be that common. The main usefulness is being a backstop against alpha strikes. If you never hit alpha strikes, that's totally cool, right? No points spent anyway.

Rest assured, next time you mistake me for some other similarly nondescript person and offer me stuff, it'll play out differently.

We were always at war with @gennataos

The other issue I'm seeing is that those who are deriding the upgrade may not be drawn to making use of those platforms capable of taking it, or are drawn to some of those that are but have access to a more frontloaded damaging option (IE the T-70) so don't see the point offensively and the defensive possibilities that a Jamming Beam brings don't out weight that for them at all.

Did you fly Leebo instead of Dash in 1st ed?

He flew BB8 Poe. Understandable confusion.

Not saying it is great, but being able to play tower defense sounds hilarious. It would be one of those squads to bring to casual night, but it requires a decent investment (or massive borrowing).

However a single U-Wing with Leia (even a Partisan) is fantastic.

That’s why I want to shy away rigged cargo shoot. Oh you didn’t play scum in 1st edition? Here’s a card in your conversion kit you can’t use.

I’m going to casually point out Brillant Evasion is not faction/force user alignment locked, and is strictly better than a single purple evade token. Slap a stealth device on Vader and laugh as opponents attempt to hit you.

I mean, isnt an evade a different mathematical hedge than an evade token?

Screw the talent on Vader; can I have another Mod slot so I can take Stealth and AB?

double afterburners.

I absolutely would if they let me.

Thanks for the episode reminder to actually ******* register. All set to go with my dumpster fire team.

And I would run Talonbane with 3 stealth device. 7 green at range 3, 8 if obstructed... They have a very good reason for that rule being in place.

I don't care what they do in wild

Yep!

But... that's not actually true.

Expected damage from 3 focused attack dice vs 3 green dice with an evade token: 0.494 (with a stealth device for 4 dice: 0.348)

Expected damage from 3 focused attack dice vs 3 green dice with a force charge and Brilliant Evasion: 0.644 (with a stealth device for 4 dice: 0.362)

Now, you went for something other than an evade, you'd have a focus token or a lock or have done a movement action instead. There'd be some other source of value like dodging an arc or hitting harder on offense. But if we're looking only at the effect on your green dice, purple evade is not that bad.

It'll also depend on the number of incoming attacks. Once you have multiple attacks coming in, it'll often be better to have a focus/force than evade/no force, but against a single attack...

I.e. fly a Lambda with a Howl mini swarm, it’s one of the more likely lists to benefit.

My favorite ships are the Defender and Gunboat. I put jamming beam on none of them. I just built a list with Vader, Stele, and Sai, and left Sai's cannon empty. The opportunity cost of jamming beam is too high. All that wasted table space could have held some acrylic tokens or a tasty beverage.
