Are you including the spring and fall cycles in your regional (defunct Hyperspace Trials, now Primes) count? Ottawa got 1, maybe two, in the whole 1.0 run, and we're getting at least 2 this year, but both in the fall. Montreal had almost none until they got 2 in the same cycle last year. They have 3 now. If anything, the dumb grouping by region is what I'd question.

I am not, partially because we simply don't know what the fall will look like. The primary issue is that those are VERY close to worlds, and thus either don't feed into 2019 worlds, or they DO (which is probably good), but they're awfully late for non-Americans to make plans (bad).

As far as Nationals (now Grands), there was endless complaining about it always being in Toronto in Canada. Canada is HUGE and air travel is much more expensive than US air travel. This lead to many people feeling really left out. If we can have east coast and west coast grands (maybe one for the maritimes), that'd make many people happy.

Like, more "nationals" is a good thing, Im just not sure they're going to follow through with that. I hope they do - precisely for the reason to mentioned (and likewise, elsewhere, like US, AUS, etc).

The part I'm happy about is the twice per year per store Store Champs. It'll make them almost common and should keep more of a local flavour.

Yeah, this is good.

I mean, that's great. I'm just noting we got less here on the east coast.

sure, and I'm just noting we got more here. It's not surprising that regional distribution is a little wild the year. Hopefully they'll figure it out. The requirements this year did put weird constraints though. The ability to sit 64 is tough in Houston where stores tend to be small and rent is high, while in dallas and austin they have smaller populations but tend towards bigger stores.

Also, next season probably doesnt funnel to this worlds, so if someone wanted in on this worlds, this is it 😕

Git gud? if farmer can castle his way into a worlds invite, I believe the johnson can get one.

Cute. Thanks.

I have 2 chances all year (ignoring fall season, simply because we don't know what it is).

I also think that it is weird how the top 8 at a system open get an invite, but only the top 4 at *WhateverNationalsIsCalled*

I am a bit sad that my World's window is small this year, but probably for the best since that means I don't have cajole my wife to be with the kids all weekend.

From European point of view System Opens are more populous (up to 500-600 in UK) more prestigious and less frequent than Nationals (only 5-6 per season compared to like 15 Nationals). Smaller countries have Nationals for like 40-50 players.

I still can't believe this, it's insane.

I'd say we're starting to catch up with the 215 in Phoenix (which is not population dense at all), but I suspect the UK will grow ever faster than our catchup attempts. Is there a cap on the size this year?

Yea there's cap at around 600, and they passed 500 like month ago. It's gonna be new record.

Am I right that with 600+ players there will be.... Top128? :D

Edit: UK community is huge, but not that huge. Please remember that UK is super connected with whole Europe, and flights in EU are super cheap: going from Poland do London is like 100USD round trip standard price, but you can catch discounts up to 50USD. So UK SOS is like Europe X-wing party: each country has like 10-20-30 participants. Every active player usually goes to 2 SOS per year: closest one + UK one.

http://swisstriangle.net/ claims top 66.

Results:
10 players at 6-0
56 players at 5-1
140 players at 4-2
188 players at 3-3
140 players at 2-4
56 players at 1-5
10 players at 0-6

That's still insane - going 5-1 doesn't even get you tokens, haha. Does OP usually increase the prize payout for this?

seriously, the drive up from Tucson is 2 hours of "well, if we break down here, i guess we die."

At least it's not as bad as the drive to Vegas, which is so dull it's been immortalized as the Desert Bus video game.

AFAIK (and I was OP for Polish SOS 330+ players) prize pool is extended to cover all 5-1 and 6-0

After second thought technically it is top128 ;)

With only 2 matches played, and 62 byes ;)

Haha, yeah, technically correct! The best kind, of course :P

The ultimate "MoV doesn't matter" tournament, except for the four suckers who lose the lottery...

OP have said the 2019 UK system open is up to 635 capacity in the room. They have sold all bar ~90 tickets last I heard.

Alec Thorne said 3 weeks ago that 603 tickets had been sold with a cap of 674 in the room.

It is on the Facebook event page, in reply to someone asking.

That sounds fair. 1,500 km for 50 USD. Meanwhile, Ottawa to Toronto is 200USD for 400km, if you're lucky. Trains are as expensive and ridiculously slow. And it's 4h+ to drive there. And Ottawa is the closest other big urban centre from Toronto, the other ones are much, much farther away.

We finally get a System Open in Canada this, but getting to Toronto is not cheap or quick from any other big cities in Canada.

In short: jealous reacts only!

Yeah but what percentage of canadians live outside downtown Canada? It's gotta be small right?

I checked for fun and it's 93%.

Going to Syracuse for Naboo was quicker than going to Toronto. Though it was in this weird foreign country.

Unless you count the whole of the GTA, which then it's 86% don't live in that one small footprint...

Patience... There are rumours that there will be change.

I used to live in Sierra Vista and would go see the Coyotes play. I know that drive well.

by the way, is it just my perception or is the forum unusually quiet and calm since points dropped? It's like there is nothing to complain about, and thus nobody has anything to talk about.

I’m just focusing on my 1 of 2 chances to qualify for worlds.

the answer probably partially lies in that no one’s has any idea what’s good or bad.

Yeah I'd mostly attribute to this. No big events have happened to give us an early snapshot of a developing meta for people to either comment or complain about in a knee jerking manner. There's just a small list of things that went mostly untouched so they're assumed to stay at top tiers (Quad Phantoms, Trip Upsilon, & Sloane) and it's everyone basically building lists again to see what could work.
