There's a Kagi that came 3rd in swiss as well

"We know, for instance, that the recent points costs should bring large-base ships back into the metagame, even though there was only large-base ship in the Top 12 lists at Glendale."

still errors, too funny

Down with Hyperspace trials?

Long live Hyperspace Prime Championships?

I love when name changes get announced for existing events and then those names change before any of the events even happen. It really makes me feel confident in the stability of the organizer of those events.

I've heard a lot of praise for Alex Watkins in the UK, so I think this move is probably a good thing for all of us.

Mental stability?

The name changes were bad, reversing course (or adjusting) on a bad decision is a good thing. Having a single branding across their games is even better.

Store championships going to twice a year per store is pretty nice. I may be able to drag my sons to one someday. The increased focus on more casual (read "non-tournament") formats is really nice for us. Son #2 agreed to go to the recent quick build event because he got to pick who he'd play against. More of that is a better transition for people that are not hyper competitive.

I, for one, cared not for local ranked tournaments. It gets in the way of fun for so many players when there's a handful of "better" players they "know" will win. I tried to always provide a fun games, but some of the other better players just go for the kill, which means that when first round pairings are announced, you'd hear a lot of "oh no... I'll start with a guaranteed loss." That sucked. Disclosure: I spent a year being the TO and winning nearly every local event. It's not fun as I always chose to skip the prizes since it'd look bad otherwise.

Alex is pro. I bet changing names convention (previous "new" names sucked big times don't you think?) was only start of good things to come.

Maybe I'm missing something on the new names, but... I'm not sure they actually added much clarity. For example, I saw the article yesterday, but I've already forgotten the tier of events they laid out. Having the different/progressively fancier symbols definitely helps, but it's somehow still not as intuitive as store -> region -> national -> "big things"

I think they are trying to get away from “regional” and “national” because they just want to hold more of them. It doesn’t make sense to have two regionals a ten minute drive from each other. It also isn’t a great look to not let a country have a national, but you have as many nationals as regionals in some parts of Europe.

That being said, the more often it switches the less I remember the names. Maybe I’ll get used to this and it will stick?

That's probably correct.

I think it's all about having more Premier class events in USA not being tied to specific country. In previous system USA could have 2/3 "Nationals" for whole continent while Europe had one for each State-sized country (like Poland/Czech/Hungary/Italy/Germany etc).

Current system is more fair for America. You can have more super big prestigious trounaments like West Coast Championship/ East Coast Championship or Alaska Championship ;) etc.

I can totally imagine ie that next Mynoc Special will get National tier prize support/prestige form FFG officials as now they have tools and possiblities.

Problem was terrible naming convention, which was eradicated by Alex Watkins as an inauguration of his reign :)

Sadly, I dont think that will happen.

I'm in the DC metro area, and we have less regionals in a 4.5h drive than before (only 4).

anything more than a 2h drive basically means hotel, multiple days, etc.

I don;t think they're going to follow through with more "national"-level events in the US. I suspect they'll just have 1 and tell us to be happy. :(

I think the idea now is to go back to one consistent set of names across all games, at least

It makes me sad. I am not driving to VA Beach that early in the year.

texas ended up with significantly more. We used to have 2/3 cities have regionals, with long drives out to OK or LA if you wanted more. This year we have 5 within texas and the LA and OK regionals are still there. Plus whatever stores got it for the next season.

I mean, that's great. I'm just noting we got less here on the east coast.

Also, next season probably doesnt funnel to this worlds, so if someone wanted in on this worlds, this is it 😕

Are you including the spring and fall cycles in your regional (defunct Hyperspace Trials, now Primes) count? Ottawa got 1, maybe two, in the whole 1.0 run, and we're getting at least 2 this year, but both in the fall. Montreal had almost none until they got 2 in the same cycle last year. They have 3 now. If anything, the dumb grouping by region is what I'd question.

As far as Nationals (now Grands), there was endless complaining about it always being in Toronto in Canada. Canada is HUGE and air travel is much more expensive than US air travel. This lead to many people feeling really left out. If we can have east coast and west coast grands (maybe one for the maritimes), that'd make many people happy.

The part I'm happy about is the twice per year per store Store Champs. It'll make them almost common and should keep more of a local flavour.
