Well, that’s 1.0 done for me, I ended up playing at a small local convention where I was TO because we had an odd number. I’ve had a lot of fun with the game, no matter how degenerate it’s become. Next Thursday cannot come quickly enough.

My actual hope is that they let the veterans play with their little toys (all ships) until the big premier events occur.

There are already wave kits to funnel new players. Veterans can get their excitedness out of the way, then when it's premier time (basically March 2019, minus a few possible system opens), FFG can then just say the 'regional' season is re-release only. All factions should likely be here by then (given their hurried production schedule), and then everyone would have like 5-ish ships for 7 factions (more? are there even more ways to add factions?) to keep them happy.

That's my ideal scenario.

Unfortunately [for me], that leaves system opens in a nebulous area, in danger of possibly being all ships (sucks to be you, new player!). But we'll see. This is all my rather optimistic guessing to strike a balance of veterans and new players.

On the flip side, the System Opens are higher level competition so even if it was a limited format, I would expect new players to not do well just because of the skill gap. I really don't think it will make a difference at the System Open level.

That seems like a reasonable solution. I wouldn't be surprised or upset to see System Opens as an open format because they're sort of a different track than the tournaments formerly known as Regionals. It gives new players and people who don't like conversion kits a comptetitive outlet in the normal track, and those that want everything get the System Open. Any new player that gets really interested in being competitive at a System Open can probably get a conversion kit and the handful of models they need without much trouble.

The question, of course, will be Worlds.

I expect worlds to follow (generally) the regionals track.

i don’t see why people would be upset with that, though in positive some will find a way.

As we saw when 2.0 was announced, people will find a way to be upset.

I like your plan @Tlfj200 - It makes an enormous amount of sense and allows a more than reasonable allowance to players of all levels.

I'm expecting something else will materialize of course...

Also I think that I may start to auto-include Tobias in any Scum squad I make that I have a free crew and two points that doesn't care about a bid. Could be a funny counter to swarms.

I'm still unsure how effective he will be, but the games are hilarious. Just pick up a rock, move it somewhere else, evil laugh, declare victory is now assured... continue playing like you don't have a clue, but often spend time staring at that rock with concern.

It's mostly the mindgames. I can think of worse ways to spend two points. Maybe it's the new Disrespect Chips?

Does final salvo exist in 2.0? Rules said something about games ending in a tie or did it always say this and just imply final salvo?

WINNING THE GAME The game ends at the end of a round if all of a player’s ships are removed from the game. The player with no ships remaining loses, and the player with at least one ship remaining wins. If both players’ last remaining ships are destroyed in the same round, the game ends in a draw.

I'm operating on the assumption that it will be a tournament tie-breaker. If not, I'll edit accordingly.

I believe the rule book always stated this, and final salvo was added to the tournament rules specifically... however, I will freely admit I'm going from memory of 1.0 here and have not confirmed my answer before writing this response.

With half points on everything and 200 points of wiggle room, I have to imagine that a game being tied is going to be really rare.

Nice write up. Only thing I would add is maybe a link to the dmg calculator - that really helps in knowing if you should joust or not. Especially the calc that lets you know how many shots you can take before dying.

In theory it was going to be rare in 1.0.... Fist time I witnessed a final salvo, everybody dropped what they were doing and crowded around the table to see it happen. (both sides had totally annihilated each other)

It still felt fairly rare to me. Over the many tournament games I've played in the last 18 months, the only time a game I played went to final salvo was when we both realized the outcome didn't matter and decided to roll off and do something else.

I'm somewhere around 4 or 5 salvos, that I can remember anyway, within the past year. I don't go to many tournaments and all but one of those salvos were because nothing died. Some of those results would change with half points, oddly enough I think the HWK final salvo would still have happened...

The key point in my comment though was that refusing to engage and forcing your opponent to you is still a valid tactic in many cases. These can easily become a final salvo situation as an opponent may equally be unwilling to engage in unfavorable conditions until too late - or just not realize what was going to happen. Oh, that poor double Scurrg list that bomb walled and hid in the corner...

An article like this is really timely, because we're all going to have to shoot each other down in 2.0. Dancing around and running for time feels like a trap. It's just too easy to plink in that one more point of damage which gets something to half points. Lopsided victories seem like they'll be pretty rare, the MOV gap will shrink. The part where @Biophysical talked about occupying an opposing force with less points, that's going to be a key to victory. I don't care if I lose Wedge, as long as I take Fenn down in the process.

At least, that's the way I'm approaching 2.0. /shrug

Fair enough - but what I think what makes final salvo in 2.0 less likely is that you are more likely to run into squads that are sub-200 points just because there weren't any upgrades that could fit. And those 199 point vs 198 point squads aren't going to final salvo.

Half points are crazy. It was weird the first time I had 3 ships all on half points against a single opponent small ship still at full near the end of the game. My brain told me I was winning. But I definitely wasnt.

Running still happens but looks a bit different to. Some things ( Defenders, Gunboats, etc. can still just decide to not play at all if they want at a certain point) but others like Vader end up "running" but via arc dodging rather than 5 straight boost rolls.

Yeah, I've seen the same thing. I won a triple ace list, none of which died, while having lost a ship and half points on all but one of mine. I thought I was losing the whole time. I've also seen Guri dance around the remainder of a TIE swarm and plink in just enough damage to get her the win after Boba died early.

Sure, running will still happen, but I don't think to the extent we've seen in the past.

I would agree they should be less likely to happen. Half points is kinda risky!

It'll be interesting to see where list building trends go. That said, the list points aren't what determines whether a fleet goes to final salvo. I had a list setup at 199 points that had 13 red dice to toss - not quite a match for a 7 TIE swarm, but significant. I phased it out though without flying as I managed a 200 point list with 15 instead.
