Carolina Krayts is the best X-Wing podcast

Are the "packs" truly random or we thinking X pilots, X upgrades, etc. per pack?

Could kind of see generating the packs semi randomly from a cardpool with certain rules and a seed value to make it repeatable. Then you could just print off the pack and have people initial next to anything they take. Then they build stuff with their own cards. Removes the need to continually buy more kits or deal with people returning stuff to a central source. Obviously doesn't matter for Gencon, happy to draft and keep the stuff from there. But if draft X-wing turns out to be fun...

I was thinking cube for this, because it's my conversion kits... In general could go either way - there will always probably be demand for conversion kits, but I was planning on just having stuff set aside for it. Basically take the cards, put them in a big pile, shuffle, then make packs out of it.

I plan to be at gencon all day Thursday, I will play some draft 2.0 if it doesn’t interfere with the 4pm 2.0 tournament.

My plan for 2.0 drafting is mainly going to be based around the threat card ideas, I will probably "split" the cards so that each drafted card only has one of the threat builds on them. It should be simple quick and possibly lead to sideboardable gaming as well without the added complexity of full list building.

Sounds like you'll easily get a full eight @Brunas. I may just leave my kit at home and swing by to watch for a bit and do that drop off. I'll have to stay alert though to figure out where you're going to setup.

I don't know if the conversion kits have threat cards in them though...

That said, making them isn't super hard. @Kieransi, Asa (Of B2D), and I have done it locally. It is pretty fun, but drafting with them can be complicated sometimes. Just know what you want going in. We didn't, and it is hurting us now.

Hopefully, but everyone's eager to sign up when it's not thursday and they haven't just been waiting in line for a long time :)

Yeh the conversion kits don't come with cards. But for the first few months after Second Edition launches I want to keep as many of our "official" events limited to "released" kits so those just coming back or getting into the game for the first time are not at a disadvantage. So we will start with official threat cards and then maybe start adding our own "customised" ones to that for variety.

Well, hypothetically speaking then... What would a player need to supply beyond the monetary requirements to enter such an event? I'm looking to leave most of my miniatures behind.

Once the app releases, it probably won't be hard to have homebrew threat cards with just the initial 2e stuff. It also may be fun to have a pirate variant in that you can only take a different faction if it is the bottom card on the two ship threat cards. So you could fill out a rebel squad with a cheap TIE or something.

Hey @catachanninja, how are you? Busy?

Good to hear, because I‘m still waiting for that definition of an ace ?

@Brunas says i have to keep it secret and @Tlfj200 says I'm wrong

WEG was very basic and story based. It had stats for things but it didn’t really flow nicely?

I know our own group pretty much just used Xwing rules for our WEG setup. Rolled piloting skill before combat began and that would be the PS number/initiative for battle. Gunnery was also rolled in the same way, and that would be the order of firing.

Shields could be regenerated with the shields skill

Sensors... etc...

otherwise it was just a standard FFG Xwing game.

Honestly I've thought this over and I'd just use the WEG system and have the minis as reference. The guys from Shuttle Tyderium have an xwing converstion for FFG RPG, but even then I'm not sure I'd recommend it.

Xwing is freaking brutal, you can lose a ship in a heartbeat. Most player's can't stomach that gameplay nowadays as RPG Players.

That being said WEG is a brutal system as well, so maybe it's just as dangerous.

Correct. A lot of Video Games started to remove health bars and replaced them with regen/respawn mechanics instead which I think contributes to the expectations that players have for X-Wing.

Good games are founded on consequences or at least the possibility of consequences.

Oh and @Brunas the third most useful thing I heard on the podcast was something like and im not quoting perfectly...."you should go into a game expecting it to be difficult to win and that it is in fact possible to lose, thats how this is supposed to work"

And your response wasn’t ‘KRAYTS ON TOP ON TOP!!’ or a reminder who the winner of North America’s most prestigious tournament was?

We’ve done a few rescue and extraction missions. Adds story elements for the GM. There’s definitely a leaning towards no player deaths and old EU ejections.

Also when everybody has regen... you just buy time for another player repairs or escapes.

Some templates and dice and that's it, probably (for gencon). No reason to bother with ship models, though we might find a way to bring stuff just to make it easier to parse the board state. No money or anything, we're just opening my kits so whatever.

I'll likely be bringing a smattering of random ships. Basically whatever I can fit in my kit that fits in my backpack, so weighted heavily towards the smaller and less spiky end of the spectrum. People are free to borrow. I find games where the one ship without a model is <blah> or where we're pretending the A wing is a Z-95 much easier to follow than games with no models at all

Probably will need to bring small and large bases. I think the conversion kits only have medium bases.

Oh yeah, I'll have all that stuff though. I mean for gencon all you really will need is the stuff you've already got to play either the 1.0 or 2.0 tournament anyways

I'm trying to figure out how ships are organized for some weird edge cases....

Do we know how the tiles are laid out for bombers? There must be a cardboard chit that's scimitar/gamma, right?

5 total tiles probably. 1 for each unique and a scimitar/gamma tile. That would be the most efficient way to do it.
