How do you help new and often experienced players learn to recognize or accept the difference between a casual game and a practice game?
maximise the positive first experience so they keep coming back. my local community grew out of a existing Squadron and every member is expected to be in team colours and have a wholesome list on hand every xwing night. when a new player on facebook asks where to play xwing, the answer is go to our local and introduce yourself to anyone in a red polo. the squadron are under instruction to set newbies up with a game against a list that should have minimal complexity and ideally involve a lot of arcs and dials.
the very best of our community builders communicate very clearly the game they are engaging in and the rules involved, the option of what kind of game is offered to the opponent before they start.

This is really well phrased.
Having done 2 leagues (and the reason we haven't done more) is that the play night turned into 3-4 ppl sitting around waiting for their league opponent to show up instead of playing each other.

We assigned half the opponents then just let people play whoever for the rest of them - less balanced games, but also I'd rather be playing than not.

Speaking of less balanced games...fairly confident I played my last game of 1.0 tonight.
Quick everyone back to 2.0!!!
It is already a better more balanced and challenging game even partially spoiled without any known points for upgrades, ships, or pilots.
Edited by Boom OwlOur league we just pair people each week using standard swiss methods. At a specified time we just disable anyone who isn't there and generate the next round. Yeh this can lead to some end of league funkyness with swiss pairings but works best for us. We also found that keeping leagues to 1 official game per week for 4 weeks works for our guys. Most people play multiple casual games but it means they can bail straight after the league game with no consequences.

2) I think just hyping leagues, doing demos.
- during 1.0, do more alt formats (pirate tournaments are nice and more "core" x-wing focused).
- version 1.5
- Our local league is doing 2.0 with the following rules:
- if both players agree to each others lists - play whatever
- if you can't agree, both players are limited to demo lists seen on stream/TC video or threat cards
I have never done a league, and I signed up for the 2.0 league...
When i saw the phrase "our local leauge " i did a double take cuz i didnt realize it was you.
How are you proxying dials?

1.0 can't hurt you anymore!
Dismantled my first Ghost list with that VK/Vessery/Meg tonight. OP on top!
Loving flying the reapers right now. I am running VK/PS1Palp/Soontir but man getting used to judging what a 1 bank + <whatever> when you a flying through tightly crowded rock fields takes a bit to get used to again. But that in its own way is fantastic!

We just bring a bunch of dials (gunboats, tie fighters, interceptors, etc) and set whatever dial is needed for that ship each turn.
that way you can always set whatever maneuver is needed for the new dials like firespray and advanced.
a t70 dial works fine for x-wings.

Its really easy to print the dials and cut them out. Then just use them with the 1.0 covers. A little janky but it works well enough.

I have 4 simple rules when flying against new players (or people I want to get into the game):
1) No condition cards
2) No regen
3) No TLT
4) No trajectory simulator
I find that three ship lists are good and tend to go easy on the intentional blocks if I have a lower PS.

Just to add to what @Brunas says, I've generally been able to find 1.0 dials that are "close enough" to a given 2.0 to work pretty smoothly in practice. If you ignore the colors and allow things like swapping sloops/trolls and so on, you can almost always get within a single maneuver, which is usually good enough for practice. Then I'll just either print out the 2.0 dial for color reference or just written a bullet or two (blues are XYZ, reds are ABC).
For instance, for the new deci you can use a YT-2400 dial and just never use the 4k. For the new firespray you can use a VCX dial with 3 turns -> 3trolls and 5k -> 4k, or alternatively a Tie/SF dial with sloops->trolls and 3 turns -> 4k. As @Brunas notes, a 1.0 T-70 dial works well for the new T-64, and also the new YT-1300.
I have a little list of the best 1.0 proxy dials I've found but don't have access to it at the moment. This seems like something that might be useful to put into one of the 2.0 Google Docs come to think of it.

My normal "newish player" list was 3 Strikers and a Lambda.
A Lambda with Hux, and all of those Strikers are Black Squad Scouts.
But the last player that said they were new came from Magic and immediately started with Poe Jess Lowhrick, so they'll get no soft list from me.
Apparently Space Jam 2 trailer will drop this weekend. Has me thinking about Troopers, Krennic, and ISB Jam 2.0...

Not sure it will be a better choice than a force user crew in most cases but its absolutely a "biggs" effect type card.
The fact it applies to multiple ships is pretty awesome and it shutsdown Lando's YT-1300 1.0 Maul style stress to reroll Pilot Ability pretty hard.

I didn't notice at first but re-reading....Krennic gives the ship using it the TL action. Which is great for the 2.0 Reaper which has none.

So its not a free shield, FCS, and a free damage per turn. Its still pretty good though? Auto Damage is rarely a bad thing and there isnt any range restriction on the TL Synergy.

Glad they recognized how stupid 1.0 Slicers is and toned this down a bit.
Its still potentially extremely good especially if you have 2 ships pushing out Jam Action tokens each turn.
I see this wrecking some swarms focus tokens pretty hard. But force users will mostly shrug it off I guess?

Just play triple wookies against him. That will be wholesome.

I didn't note any of those things but I take full credit, you're welcome internet.

I think this is backwards - one out of 6-8 of your ships not having a focus isn't a big deal, jamming Vader's Target lock probably is?
I've taken over the league for the fall season when 2.0 fires up, pretty excited to see what we can come up with under the new rules set. @Brunas how do you think the objective format will translate to 2.0? minimal rules changes? We used it for our league last season and it was very entertaining and made for some really exciting games and stories. We adapted a few house rules on top, like uniques can only be used once. generics can only be used in pairs once (ie: if you use 2 or more X-Wing Rookies in game one, you can only ever field 1 Rookie from then on). Finals were bloody and messy.
Going to probably do a hard and fast cancellation rule, if you no show on your opponent more than once you get handed a loss. Our organizers last time put some rewards in place for finishing their games early, so if you got all 6 games in you got first pick from a set of custom target locks.

Cryodex let me fall in love again, Coach A is really a great guy, I love the fact Richard White let us mail him 100,000 Horton S, and so on and so on, that and the HIt HIt Crit Podcast.
Personally I cannot believe people continue love my Friday questions and dumb Facebook posts. Wade Piche is such an amazing person also.
I could say I love the ships and art, as my Raider sits on my work desk but it’s all about the friendships over plastic ships.
I hope in a small way I make this place better.
I completely agree! My love for this game has completely transcended the table. The people I've met and the opportunities it's given me still blow my mind. The fact that people in countries I've never visited use something I created is just crazy. People logging on to listen to me drunk ramble with a couple other players on a Wednesday night podcast, it's crazy! I love being part of this community.

I want Space Jam 2 solely so that I can get a higher res space jam logo to use in making playmats.
Is the original Space Jam website still up?

It should mostly work out, though the rules for ships obstructing attacks and such might technically not be correct anymore. Hopefully it's pretty easy to sort out, but you can just message me if anything gets too weird and we'll get it sorted out. We should get the format stuff updated for second edition soon ™
That's for questions like can I lock this objective, etc, just double the objective points and you'll be good to go 99% of the time.

Thanks, I'm not to sure how much of it we will use for next season, but I want to build off it and try and devise a few new scenarios. The framework is incredibly solid to build on, and I thank you guys for doing it.
