Edit: As someone that used Kestal with ICT to ignore peoples defensive mods and chain ionize them, I understand the idea of "you don't want to play where Ion is good."

That said, there's plenty of room for Ion effects to be usable without being unfun.

God, are you guys really going to go all echo chamber on each other and start complaining about how control bots are such an NPE? I don’t care what Sim’s list was...in those last three streamed games, he outflew each opponent. Simple as that. Don’t start ******* about the list, give the dude credit.

That said, bring on the rush of bad brobot play. It’s a ridiculously hard list to fly well.

Nah. He flew it well. Most of the stuff that high in the field is busted in it's own way. He used his busted stuff better than anybody else used theirs.

This. I don't begrudge anybody for playing broken things, and it doesn't make you bad player, but it also doesn't mean it isn't broken. The entire top 4 (and probably top 8 and 16) had some sort of broken mechanic, it was just more obvious in some than in others.

I might have started that, my bad. Simeon flew it amazing, I flew it poorly in a hangar bay, and I think I’m just not looking forward to slogging through control lists once store champs starts again (if it does?).

5 of worlds top 16 were Europeans, 4 out 8 in the next round and top 4 were 3 Europeans and Nathan.

Europeans only dropped games to other Europeans in the cut.

Krayts own banner man Duncan (i still don't understand if he is a krayt or one of nova squadron or some mix of the two) got beaten by my own country national champion.

Final was Netherlands VS UK.

Are you guys still not taking seriously the tiny and always behind European meta?

To be fair, brobots aren’t really Euro meta any more than Corran is US meta, there are 1-2 people at all using them anywhere with any success. The majority of the cut was made up by Palp aces, 100pt Miranda, and Ghost/Fenn. A well deserved, well flown win by one of the only successful control bots users around doesn’t really make control bots vs Palp Aces an example of the European meta.

If I’m giving the impression that I don’t think Sim won on merit or did not fly outrageously well then I am sorry, that was in no way my intent. While I personally despise flying against Ion control it is unquestionably something that takes mad skills to use effectively, and Sim was displaying those skills in abundance last night.

I've played the hillbots on and off for months trying to make it work.

And

Never won a game.

Its next level difficult to pull off.

This fella deserves nothing but the highest respect for taking worlds with it.

He absolutely deserves respect. He won worlds and went, I think they said in stream, 8-0 after starting 3-2 to win it. He flew that list great, and all those top lists are degenerate in their own way, there is no take away from him at all to talk about hyper control lists being sometimes an NPE. Major props to him for finding a way to make brobots work at all and putting in the time to get good with them!

Have we called the European meta ‘small’? Who actually said that (I believe someone said it).

thw European meta is literally about half of the data points I use from juggler though. It’s defined in the presentation.

Is Control Bots a staple of the European Meta outside of two players? Were the other European players in the top 16 running something as unique that people would look at and say be able to tell where the player was from? It seemed to me that outside of Control Bots, it was pretty much the standard meta, regardless of where the players were from.

Mynock Squadron I think, at least I remember them talking about it on a podcast when going over Regionals one year. It seems it has become bulletin board material.

We had the Nathan Eide Corran outlier, the Control Bots outlier, and one B/SF. Aside from that it was mostly more of the same. Lots of 100pt Miranda variants, lots of palpatine, and a couple ghosts. It was great to see a decent spread of international players for what are the World Championships, and though the meta in the worlds cut was a pretty close representation of the meta in the 5 months pre-worlds it was cool to see the top squads included the brobots played by the eventual winner.

Yeah, my point was more that some people want to spin the narrative that the results show that Europe came in with their meta and beat the meta here in the US, but I think it’s more that a very good player made a good counter meta call and dominated the entire top cut.

I mean, I’m not going to say you’re wrong, but Heaver vs Parker is widely considered the best game of xwing ever recorded, occurred during the golden age of 1.0, and could have gone either way down to the very end.

This was a nice worlds final with fantastic flying, and the exuberant celebration was fun to see (although a little nerd awkward at points, but that happens no matter what with these kinds of things) as well as the brobots/Simeon underdog story, but the game was over once inqy got ioned, much sooner than the result in Heaver v Parker was known.

Did he make a call though? From the sound of his post game interview, he liked the way the ship flew and it gelled with him, and once Jespers ion bots variant started to make some good showings, he pulled the list and made it his own. Sounded like to me it was a case of a player liking a good list more than he was trying to make any type of meta call. But I’m not sure I have the full story.

Yep, agreed. The Euro meta beating US meta thing is not a great narrative because the meta encompasses results all over the world, brobots are not meta anywhere, and most of the players, including the Europeans who made the cut, were running those various meta staples. A superbly flown list that isn’t meta anywhere, expertly piloted by a kid from the UK, was the winner here. That’s the real narrative.

I guess whether it was deliberately a specific call for Worlds, one of the reasons it was good in the first place is because it is very strong counter meta list. Either way, I was really just trying to de-emphasize the US Vs Europe narrative.
