On the topic of memes...WTF is a weeb and this whole "knuckles" thing?

I'm old. My hotmail account is old enough to legally drink. I don't understand you kids and your dank memes.

Weeb is short for Weaboo or some other dumb spelling, an insulting term for a crazy anime fan. Knuckles is referring to the sonic the hedgehog character, and there is some meme reason for him that doesn’t make sense either.

Kids these days (more like kids a decade ago, god I’m old).

edit: Nukols (or some other spelling) can also be “big acrylic” Andrew of the Birmingham Barons and Curled Paw Creatives.

The knuckles meme is especially dumb, like really really dumb. Which makes it one of my favorites. It sort of just weirdly clicked with miranda nym for me. If you have 20 minutes free and don't value your sanity I can post some links.

Isn’t that redundant? :)

No, the more crazy ones. Think cat ears in public and lewd figurines and body pillows, not just cargo shorts t-shirt and a fedora.

Well, the first one is common enough in public at big conventions - they just start to blend in. The lewd figures generally have a better manufacturing quality. And the pillows... uh, nope. I'm out.

Once upon a time there was a terrible place on the internet called 4chan, you've never seen a worse hive of scum and villainy. It had lots of people calling each other Wapanese a portmanteau for White Japanese or Wannabe Japanese. Since 4chan was such a nice wholesome place and no one there ever insulted anyone for any reason this was unacceptable and the moderators used a replacement function to replace all mentions of the word wapanese with weeaboo from a PBF comic. Because... yeah... just look at the comic it's pretty self explanatory and totally makes sense really

0Ao47.jpg

For some unexplainable and completely unpredictable reason rather than cutting down on usage the denizens of 4chan started using the word even more often and it replaced wapanese everywhere. Then it got shortened to weebs cause ain't nobody got time for typing and then the weebs like reclaimed it or something and are now proud of being weebs... I dunno

So you see there's a perfectly rational and not at all stupid origin for the word.

That was far too wholesome and rational of an explanation for this thread, sir. And no lies...I had to google "portmanteau". That's a new one. :D

And since you mentioned 4Chan...can I get a venn diagram of "Weebs" and "Neets"

I'm sorry but my paper on the mix of simply correlative as well directional causal relationships isn't quite ready for publication yet. But please look for it in an upcoming journal of Nature Dank Memes

It's Nature, so you'd better be willing to pony up some serious scratch for your dank memes.

I'm going to give this a watch after work. I'm guessing Maul onboard the CR-90 to provide free re-rolls? Otherwise, I don't see why the Raider could keep up.

No Maul, just good old fashioned TLs and Focus along with Gunnery Team and Ord Exp to modify blanks on those Harpoons. Also a 7 dice turret at range 3-5.

You've got Baze in there. Also needs Bistan for maximum disrespect.

nah, Baze is just so I get to remove two focus tokens. The Best part, is adding hits with AC is a may, so I can make my opponent spend a focus token to change 0 results, and evade 0 hits. Both of us know I don't hit, but I don't care.

Edit: Bistan + AC would be super funny though.

I've actually run Ezra + Adapt Up + Stressbot + Baze as sort of an anti-Expertise wookie hard counter. Niche case but he works well against them.

Sadly that won't work. AC says that they can't be further modified.

Nature is a series of scientific journals. For a really long time, they were just "Nature" and were one of the most prestigious journals to be published in. A few years ago, they really decided to cash in that cred and made a bunch of sub-journals with more specific categories. This had previously been the domain of very specific journals that had focused on those things, but Nature had the name, so their sub-journals got immediate cred.

Academic journals are, as a whole, very expensive subscriptions unless you're a poor grad student, and can use the University's subscription. Nature, because of prestige, is both expensive to publish in and expensive to subscribe to. Nature Dank Memes is unique in that it didn't really have a previously existing independent specialized journal (counterexample, Nature Stuctural Biology has a lot of overlap with Biophysical Journal and Journal of Molecular Biology).

****, I didn’t realize it came off that way.

i just meant we don’t have an angry emote like Facebook, so the closest we have is confused (but that’s a terrible substitute).

no consequences.

My bad. Just be cool with other's free NDM access, man. I know as a grad student he's suckling off of society's teat, but trust me, it's no more fun for him than it is for you.

I can't figure out how they allocate reactions. It randomly works and doesn't.

Confused.

Since leaving grad school, it's astonishing how hard it is to get access to articles.

Nowadays, I'm usually interested in medical journals or economics (but usually medical), and it's infuriating.

(I am aware of how to get the articles elsewise..., but it's still infuriating).

I freaking work in a job that includes the title "Scientist" and I spend more time than I should searching several pages down on Google results for job critical information hoping I can find a copy of a paper not behind a paywall, because it's still quicker than going through my company's official method for purchasing journal articles.

But it's better than my last position, which involved my boss going to a public library on the weekend, finding the article I needed, and copying it at the library. Because those 1970s science articles are bringing in major scratch for publishers, I guess.
