I've been toying with this idea myself - although I was messing around with GURPS - as the James Roberts MTMTE/Lost Light comics have provided a great look at how TF roleplaying could be accomplished... You know, basically transporting giant transformable robot people into really clever Doctor Who or Star Trek scenarios. My only question would be how to handle "superpowers" (e.g., vehicular transformation, super strength, invisibility, teleportation, sonic booms, projectable force fields, magnetic influence, etc.) via FFG's system. Maybe some of that will be included in the Genesys book? Or a future supplement like GURPS Powers? *shrug*

Speaking of Star Trek, I have to wonder how many Trek fans may ditch the new ST Adventures RPG in favor of a Genesys conversion...

BIG difference between this and savage worlds? Core rule book for savage worlds is $10, and uses standard dice you can get anywhere (and probably already have). This core rulebook costs $40 and uses at least one $15 set of dice per player.

Oh, I'm sure the rules will differ, too.

Savage Worlds - 192 page small size softcover.

Genesys - full-size hardback and, if comparable to SW books, 400+ pages.

It probably won't be 400 pages though. There's a lot of setting information and fluff material that takes up a lot of space and can be culled, not to mention pictures that, if removed, can cut down on page count. And just from the picture of the book, it doesn't look as thick. Maybe 200-250 pages?

But Savage Worlds is its own kind of game, with its own strengths and nuances. Yeah, $10 is nice, but not everybody is going to be satisfied with what they can do with that system.

Sure they'll remove the SW setting material. But I can't imagine they would release it without at least some bare bones setting info on the different genres they've mentioned.

The Savage Worlds price comparison is kind of worthwhile I think; everyone seems to be assuming this will be used as a launching point for various licensed properties like a Netrunner RPG and a L5R one. In that case, people will be buying two (presumably) full priced books to play the RPGs they want to play.

Savage Worlds is faced with the same issue, but manages to side step it a bit by being quite a cheap book. This doesn't have that going for it.

It doesn't matter much to me, I'm happy to make the investment, but in terms of overall success it could be detrimental.

That is true. Savage Worlds got away with that by making a cheaper quality book (not judging content, merely the item itself). FFG may be able to slip that option in at a later date, or they may offer a much cheaper PDF.

If we ask loud enough here, they may hear.

Seriously, though. Our gaming group has thoroughly enjoyed the narrative approach to the Star Wars games, so I could see this being fun too. It is up against some steep compitetion in gaming systems that do have brand recognition, so I wonder if it can gain enough traction to be a success.

Or Savage worlds.

Or does that mean that they take all those pages describing Alderaan getting blown up and the rise of the Empire and turn them into stats and campaign ideas? I'm sure that clever authors will have no trouble filling up those now-blank 150 pages with stats and stuff.

I don't know, something about the picture caption of the book tells me it doesn't look as thick as the CRBs for Star Wars. I could be wrong though.

And the product description mentions that hard sci-fi and soft sci-fi are each getting a chapter. If every packed setting gets a chapter, that's six individual chapters. So, maybe it could be as long.

This system seems to be something FFG could develop for almost indefinitely, there's no obvious end to the material that could be produced... it could even be licensed to other companies now that it's vanilla. Then there is the PDF, please please please let there be a PDF of the core book at least.

For me there are two things that I want to see. I love playing generic system (Hero, GURPS, Savage Worlds, D6, Tri-stat (and BRP below... man, I must be getting old) - forgot that one in an earlier post)... and this being one of them, I'm sold... I just don't yet know where it will go in my collection. The two big points for me will be what they do with the magic system(s) and how characters are built. The SWRPG system has a lot of neat trees, but I'm weary of having to build out new trees for my games, and I honestly don't think that's how they are going to do it, but the question is.. how will they.

As to the almost doing it indefinitely... I mean, GURPS has been doing it (you could argue successfully or not, well, for all these games one can argue that) for 31 years, and Champions/Hero has been at it for 36, and BRP has been at it for 37... So, that's nearing the age of TTRPG's... So, personally I'd say 3 systems have been releasing content for the majority of time this form of gaming have existed...
