Best tutorials for magnets + bases?

By docForsaken, in Runewars Painting and Modeling

Yeah scenic bases i glue down to the tray, though i use PVA glue (alot of it) so i can remove it if i feel i need to. PVA glue doesnt hold onto the black tray plastic very well, but it holds it enough where general movement wont pop it off, but even a gentle prying would.
For my footslogging heroes i dont even have it magnetized, it grips the base so tightly i dont have to bother anyway. The mounted ones though...wow so much wiggle room so yeah theyre getting magnetized.

Let's get this back on track.

So when you're doing the magnets on the hero mound for Lord Hawthorne's infantry layout -- do you clip that peg just the same as everything else? Drop one in there too? Do you drop another magnet underneath the mound for the tray?

Yah I clip the peg from the scenic base and drop in a disk... the mounted Maro doesn't really hold well yup the base but he holds enough in my storage trays.

Really?!

Got my steel disks in and yeah they work wonders.

Now i can fix my 3 random spearmen trays that have reversed polarity. When the base is just a ferrous metal, polarity means nothing!

Also a HELL of a lot faster to do.... punched out the magnets i had in the base, cleaned up the residue left behind, and placed the metal disks faster than i would normally drill the hole for the magnet before let alone put the magnet in lol

What are you guys using to clip out the pegs on the bases before gluing the disks down? I tried fingernail clippers but they don't cut flush and leave behind too much plastic residue.

i just use diagonal cutters. If you snip about half of it then snip the rest it cuts pretty flush (edit: talking about snipping half of the bottom, so nothing comes off yet. If you snip half the peg so its half as high you just made it worse lol). Though i also use a drummel to sand down pegs i didnt clip very well.

It doesnt have to be completely flush, but of course they pop up slightly if they arent totally flush.

You may have to look around a little, but I used toenail clippers. They're different from the usual "nail clipper" in that they have a straight/flat cutting edge, not the curved edge on most nail clippers. Cuts the post out flush in one clip.

I tried using a hobby/sprue cutter but it's too large to get into the right cutting position.

I just did the suggestions here and it worked great. I did have one alteration however -- after doing some measurements, I determined that a taller cylindrical magnet would fit -- I ordered these instead.

https://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=DH1H1 (They're 1/10" diameter by 1/10" height (2.5mmx2.5mm))

They ended up fitting really well inside the peg-hole and they have 32% more pull force than the 1/16" height.

I haven't tried doing a rune golem yet. I'm not sure if that will hold upside down, but it'll likely keep it from tipping easy.

glad this worked for you

I've used bezels from michaels (at the point from a local) and 4x2mm magnets from ebay (I have to drill em, but I get 50 for the price of the 10 above, and drilling is a non issue.

For bases, I've taken to drilling through the golems bases and inserting, and just whipping up some green stuff on cav/infantry and pressing a magnet into it. My carry box has galvanized roof flashing cut for the floors (glued with some PLP) I've done some side plate for tall units like golems and bannermen

You get 50 magnets for $.90?

@docForsaken These go in the hole on the model, 95% of the time you won't even need glue

https://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=DH11

Then clip out the peg in the tray, sand it a little if there is enough plastic still there that prevents these discs from sitting flat, put down a drop of glue then these discs

http://www.buttonboyinc.com/steel-metal-discs-3-4-19mm-for-use-to-make-magnetic-pendants-500-discs/

the result is a solid hold that even cavalry will stay in tray when held upside down, and minimal if any noticeable lift to the model in the trays.

I know I'm late to the party, but this is outstanding! I'm just getting into this game and bought pretty much the entire range/multiple sets. Just ordered the magnets and discs, looking forward to this project. Thanks for the great info!!

Just finished the magnet install for my spearmen and it went great. Love that click as rheumatoid pop into the base.
