Alternate use of Dragon Expansion

By Drunken One, in Talisman

We were looking for an easy way to include the Dragon Expansion into our games. We decided to use it as a side quest. We wanted it to be quick, and add some teamwork concepts to our games.

We have 3 regular Dragon Enemy Cards in our Adventure Card Deck. (Pic of the Dragon Card attached) So we decided to turn these cards into Dragon Portals.

The rules are a work in progress, as we do not want to make it too powerful, but we wanted to make it worth the effort. We haven't fully ironed out this concept, but here's the basics:

Pre-game Set-Up:

Use the side of the board with draw card spaces. (Attached a pic of it)

This board can be laid out on its own not attached to any spot on the main board.

At the beginning of the game, shuffle the 3 Dragon Kings. (Cadorus - Grilipus - Varthrax) and place the pile face down.

Add 5 strength, 5 craft and 6 gold next to the face down Dragon King cards.

(*We also take 3 talisman cards from a shuffled Talisman deck and place them face down. We used the Talisman from the Catalyst expansion that have added bonuses to each. We don't normally use these.)

(**Also thought about adding 3 Treasure Cards from the Dungeon Expansion instead of the Talisman Card next time)

This is the treasure that will be assigned to each Dragon once they are awakened.

(***If there are any additional Treasures you'd like to use feel free to add.)

Awakening a Dragon King:

When someone draws a Regular Dragon enemy card from the Adventure card deck, that player can accept to portal to the Dragon Board.

》If the player declines the Dragon card is left at that space and can be accessed by the next player who lands on it.

If accepted, the player can not take followers with them. The player does not lose the follower but if the follower allows them more object carries, the player must decide what objects to take and what to leave. Any object or follower not taken on the Quest is put face down until the quest is over or the player has portal out of the quest. The player then decides if they want to take another player with them. The additional player can be anyone who is not already in a Dragon Quest. If they choose another player, that player must go with them. That player also leaves their follower and figures out what objects to take. The player added to the quest takes their next turn as normal.

Selecting a Dragon King:

Once all the players have decided on objects, they are moved to the first space of the Dragon board. The top Dragon King card is flipped to see which Dragon is being battled and what Dragon deck is used. Use that Dragon's token to mark the Enemy Dragon card on the main board. Example: Place a red Dragon Token on the Enemy Dragon Card on the main board if Varthrax is flipped. When going through the Dragon Board, players pull from that Dragon's deck. Once a Quest is underway, no other players can enter the portal. If all the Dragon's deck have been used, shuffle and continue to pull from that deck.

Setting up the treasure:

The treasure is set up as follows depending on the Dragon card:

Cadorus: (Yellow Dragon Deck)

》Strength: 12 = 1 Strength

》Craft: 12 = 1 Craft

》Life: 5 = 2 Gold (Stack 5 life cones on Dragon Kings card)

》》 *Talisman Card - stays face down until the Dragon King is defeated, if there are 2 players on a quest it stays face down until the players duel.

Grilipus: (Green Dragon Deck)

》Strength: 10 = 1 Strength

》Craft: 14 = 2 Craft

》Life: 5 = 2 Gold (Stack 5 life cones on Dragon Kings card)

》》*Talisman Card - stays face down until the Dragon King is defeated, if there are 2 players on a quest it stays face down until the players duel.

Varthrax: (Red Dragon Deck)

》Strength: 14 = 2 Strength

》Craft: 10 = 1 Craft

》Life: 5 = 2 Gold (Stack 5 life cones on Dragon Kings card)

》》*Talisman Card - stays face down until the Dragon King is defeated, if there are 2 players on a quest it stays face down until the players duel.

Quest Rules:

Once the treasure is set, the player who accepted the Quest draws 1 card (The first space call to draw 1) from that Dragon's deck. All special abilities, objects and spells can be used as normal. Drawing cards follows the normal games rules.

》If it's an enemy you must encounter unless you have used an object, ability or spell to avoid. Spells and Magic Objects can be used normally here. Multiple enemies are encountered as normal. Any enemy avoided stays face up on that space. If the Dragon is defeated it is discarded. If another player who is on another Quest lands on the card, it is ignored.

》》If there are 2 players on a quest each player uses the other player as a follower during their turn. All abilities, power-ups, strength totals, craft totals and objects are available to both players during each of their turns. Rules for spells are normal and spells can only be used by the player it belongs to. Only if a Spell allows, can it be used during either players turn if the player who owns it decides to use it.

》》》If there are 2 players on the Quest, both players roll a dice. The total is added together to determine your attack score. If doubles are rolled, the attack is a critical strike and the battle is won. (This is still being tweaked. Not sure if this makes it too easy. Might have to set doubles as 1-3 as a missed attack with no added score to the attack and 4-6 as critical hit automatic win)

》》》》If the encounter is a win, The trophy goes to that Dragon's treasure pile. Once the Dragon king is defeated, the trophies are turned in for strength or craft and added to that Dragon's treasure stack. Example: Varthrax has been defeated and there are 4 trophies equaling 23 Strength. Those are turned in for 3 strength cones (7 each per 1 cone) and added to the 2 from when the quest began. (See Dividing Treasure)

》》》》If the encounter is a lose, the player (or players if 2 people are on the quest) lose a life. If a player loses all their lives, they move back to the portal entrance and do as they normally do when a character dies. The remaining player can continue or portal out. If they portal out, they go back to the portal entrance and do not get to encounter the space or the objects left by the fallen character. The portal stays open and now can be encountered by the next player who lands on it.

》If it's an Object, that object goes into that Dragon's treasure pile.

》If it is anything else, the card is discarded and a gold coin is placed for each card discarded in that Dragon's treasure pile.

》Any mention of Dragon Token or Tokens adds that many Gold Pieces to the Dragon's treasure pile. All instructions about Dragon Tokens is ignored

》If magic is used to discard the Dragon Portal, any player or players in that Dragon's quest get moved back to the portal entrance. The Dragon Portal card is then shuffled back into the Adventure deck. All trophies, objects, and gold that are in that Dragon's treasure pile stays there. This Dragon Quest is reopened when the next Dragon is pulled from the Adventure Deck.

》》If another Dragon Card is pulled while another Dragon Quest is already opened (Either with players on a quest or if it was not completed and has no players in it), a new Dragon Quest is selected. Draw from the remaining Dragon King cards and set up as normal. Players on different Dragon Quest can not encounter each other while on the Dragon Board. Spells can be used as normal. A woken Dragon without a portal is always the next Quest opened when a Dragon card is pulled. If multiple Dragons are awake and both have no Portal the Dragon woken first is first in line to be reopened.

Moving on the Dragon Board:

Players roll the dice and move normally. Unless the space states, players can not move backwards. Players roll normally during their normal turn. Spells work as normal. If there are multiple players on the Quest, each player takes their turn normally but both players move together. All spells, abilities and objects work normally.

Defeating the Dragon King:

Battle the dragon as normal. Follow the Dragon's card instructions when a battle is lost. Each player on the quest during their turn rolls as instructed above. Each time the Dragon is defeated, the Dragon loses a life until it is killed. Once the Dragon is dead the treasure is split. If a player is killed during the battle, follow the steps listed above. All cards left face up on the board from that Dragon's deck are discarded.

Dividing the Treasure:

If there are 2 players that completed the quest, they must encounter each other. The player who defeated the Dragon acts as the attacker. Each player has only access to their abilities, objects and Spells during this battle. Encounter can not end in a draw, if the encounter ends in a draw, spells and objects can cause a draw, the players keep rolling until someone is defeated.

》The winner gets the Talisman card.

》The trophies in the treasure pile are converted.

》The winner selects one thing from the treasure pile. The player can chose any piece of the treasure pile.

》The loser then can select any remaining piece of the treasure pile.

》Players go back and forth until all the treasure is split.

》》Odd number of treasure pieces goes to the winner of the dual.

End Quest:

After the treasure has been split, both players go back to the Portal Entrance and the Dragon Enemy card is pulled from the game. It is not put in the discard pile. It is removed completely. The defeated Dragon King is removed from the game.

Please feel free to add any comments or rules. We have yet to use the Dragon Expansion rules and completed the game. It was too confusing and really changed the game play that wasn't as fun as we thought it would. So any aspects of the original rules of the Dragon Expansion that can be incorporated would be welcomed. We feel like this usage of the board will make it a staple in our normal game.
