Ongoing 3e Conversion of "The Tale of Rose Red & Snow White"

By EineHund, in WFRP Gamemasters

I wanted a place to keep all my notes and work on this - with the hope that as various bits are worked out the GM community here will be able to help me test/look over the conversions to make sure they are inline with the previous incarnation and not too far in the 'killz all' category.

This is NOT my original work - it is just an updated 3e version of Mathias Stahle's awesome scenerio - the original of which can be found here:

www.mediafire.com/

I'll post the various bits converted below as I go along [this will also keep me MOVING on this project as I want to use it] - first up is the central bit of the adventure: Lycanthropy - I also had the Brother's Grimm done but realized I made them as PC's and not keeping with the 3e 'streamlined' NPC format so they are being redone.

It appears I am unable to post the work with the charts and die symbols...hmmm...<taps foot>

Lycanthropy

Rightfully dreaded the disease known as Lycanthropy transforms its victims into wild beasts when the moon shines upon them. It is a magical curse as much as an infection and no cures are known.

Description:
Lycanthropy is a blood disease spread by carriers known as Lycanthropes. Anyone who is Critically Wounded or in a Knocked Unconscious wound state by a Lycanthrope’s natural weapons runs the risk of being infected. In more severe cases of Lycanthrope infection, when it is in a plague form, breathing the same air may suffice. A Resilience test must be taken to avoid the disease with the challenges as follows:

Simple difficulty to avoid an airborne infection.
[♦] if the victim is Knocked Unconscious
[♦♦] if a Critical Wound is sustained

Effects:
An infected character must make a Resilience Check every night until cured with the effects listed below. Failure on the test gains the victim a special fatigue that remains in their pool until the disease is cured or runs its course. If the character reaches twice their toughness in the fatigue caused by the disease they die.

The victim passes this evening without the disease getting worse.
[sSS] The victim is able to get a good rest and can ignore one of the Fatigue until the next check.
[bo,Bo,Bo] The victim fights the disease and restores one Fatigue from those lost to the disease so far.
[bn] The victim loses ground and gain an additional * to the disease.
[bn,Bn] The mind tires and they gain a Stress to the disease.
[Chaos] Gain the Sluggish condition until the next check.

When the Lycanthrope is struck by moonlight something else happens as the disease bubbles to the surface. An infected character must make a ++ Willpower test:

The victim is cured and recover one Fatigue tokens caused by the disease each subsequent day.
[sSS] The victim recovers an additional Fatigue caused by the disease.
[Ch] The victim changes form into a were creature for one night, usually a werewolf. The transformation lasts until the next dawn and until then the victim suffers from insatiable bloodlust and any must make an Hard Willpower test to engage in any non-combat action or maneuver.
[Ch,Ch,Ch] The victim is transformed into mindless animal, usually a wolf. This is a permanent change and the characters profile is replaced with that of a wolf.

During the transformation the werewolf’s profile is adjust as follows:

Werewolf Modification
Strength Toughness Agility Intelligence Willpower Fellowship
+1 +1 +2 -1 -1 -3
Notes:
Stance:
Automatically becomes R3 and may only change with a successful Hard Willpower test.
Natural Weapons: The creatures uses its teeth and claws to good effect: Dam of (5) and Crit of (3).
Regeneration: Recover 3 wounds every round. Does not work on wounds inflicted by silver weapons, blessed weapons, or magical weapons or attacks. This ability is lost once the were-beast receives a Critical wound, though.

The creature has only the basic and following actions:

Melee Action Savage Strikes Basic Recharge: 0
Weapon Skill (St) vs. Target Defence
Used by Were-creature. Engaged with target
Effect: The were-creatures most common attack, it lashes out with its claws to rip at its foes.

[bn,Bn] The attacker suffers the staggered condition for 2 rounds
[Chaos] The attacker suffers 1 wound and suffers the staggered condition for 2 rounds

The Continued Influence of the Moon:
There is no known cure for Lycanthrope. Treatment with a herb known as Wolvesbane is believed to help the victim, but in reality only give a fortune die on the Willpower test. The creature must continue to take additional Willpower tests every night the light of the Mannslieb moon shines upon the victim with the difficulty as follows:

+1 Fortune Die - Waxing Moon [waxing phase lasts for seven days]
+1 Fortune Die - The victim is in a house, avoiding all contact with moonlight
+2 Fortune Die - Waning Moon [waning phase lasts for another seven days]
+2 Fortuen Die, +1 Expertise Die - The victim is below ground
♦♦ The Full Moon [it is full 3 days every month]

Controlling the Best Within!
A lesser-known aspect of Lycanthropy is that some shape changers can learn to master their new¬found ability to transform. They are known as anima¬gi (the singular form is animagus) within the church of Ulric and the Amber College in Altdorf.

To control the transformation the Lycanthrope must take a great risk. When he or she feels that the change is about to begin, the Lycanthrope must make a Daunting (♦♦♦♦) Willpower Test to take control of the process. No other modifiers apply.

► If the test is failed the Lycanthrope will trans¬form into mindless animal, as can happen during the first transformation. This is a permanent effect and any PC so affected would be removed from the game.
► If the test succeeds the Lycanthrope becomes a full fledged animagus, with the ability to change shape at will. Only an average (++) Willpower Test is required and the transformation then takes a number of rounds equal to the Lycanthropes willpower. This metamorphosis can be made in broad daylight if desired and the animagus also becomes free from the influence of the moon.

The existence of animagi are a well kept secret within the ulrician church. There the shape changers are re¬ferred to as Children of Ulric. There’s also rumors of kislevite animagi able to transform into bear form. Most people, including the imperial witch hunters,

Looks good so far. I am actually taking a much different tack on several plot points. Example: the suggestions are all there (rumors, signs, etc.) for the players to infer lycanthropy, but in reality, the Wolves are in fact a band of Outlaws lead by a twisted (former) zealot of Ulric. They all wear wolf furs and attack in a bestial manner, tearing and rending their opponents. They are roaming the area striking fear into the hearts of the peasantry, slaughtering enemies for real or perceived slights. I am working out the reasons for their brutal assault on the village...

I like the idea a lot - rekindles memories of The 13th Warrior and such - but I adore the twists of the original and the inherent dark humor and so am working on a fairly straight conversion.

Would love to see what your version looks like when you have it set though!

I just wanted to say thanks to both of you for working on this. I wish I had the time, but I will follow your progress and offer comments when I can. Hopefully one of you guys will get your conversion done and post it in time for me to run the adventure next month :)

This looks great so far. The original adventure was extremely well done and a successful conversion would be awesome. I'll definitely check back here often to see how you're doing. Good luck as you move forward!

Conversion for Chapter III components: Rechtlech

Playing Doctor
Unbeknownst to the old crone, the Plague of Rechtlich is an outbreak of Lycanthropy – a rare disease that transforms its victims into werewolves. The details of the illness are given in another part of the conversion file. Lycanthropy is unknown to almost everyone, except a few Mages more studied in the Lore.

A PC who examines the dead bodies on the cart and passes a Simple Observation Check will discover part of the truth. Underneath the boils and sores, some of the deceased show signs of excess hair and elongated fangs. One of them even has the yellow eyes of a wolf.

A healer will understand that this is an infectious disease with an Easy (♦) Medicine check or an Average (♦♦) First Aid test . A mage or other student of the arcane will be able to identify the disease as Lycanthropy with a Hard (♦♦♦) Spellcraft test . The test becomes Easy (♦) if the mage also has either Nature Lore or Folklore trained .

For Whom The Bell Tolls
Our heroes run a risk of being infected while searching for Jacob. Just passing through will not cause them any harm, but dealing with any of the village’s inhabitants will call for a Resilience Check. Keep in mind this Plague form of the disease is exceedingly rare and not the normal transference method outside of Rechtlich.

Both the old crone and Jacob are taken ill by the disease. The following situations will call for a Resilience Check to resist the disease in this adventure:

► Talking to the old crone, or Jacob, requires a Simple Resilience Check to avoid catching Lycanthropy. Every PC that takes part in either conversation must take the test.
► Eating or drinking anything in the village calls for a Easy (♦) Resilience Check . The same goes for handling corpses or doing just about every act of meaningless curiosity in the village.

I would count it a HUGE favor if anyone that is NOT going to run their party through this adventure could put the werewolf version of Jacob into play against their party - and tell me how it works out!

I am looking to see if it is a) Interesting b) A real challenge

Thanks! - For those that have asked - I will be trying to compile all of the conversions into a single PDF when I'm done - the 'forum updates' are mainly for me to get feedback and keep me moving through the material! =)

Consider this positive feedback, and motivation to keep going!

It looks like my crew will finish up Eye next week or the week after, at whixh point I will start them on Rose Red.

John

At this point, I am rewriting a large chunk of it; I love the base template and idea, but I am converting it into something far more dark and less fantastic (i.e. no werewolves and no magic-run kitchens).

I would be interested in seeing what you end up with Hedge - for my conversion I'm sticking with the scenario as Stahle wrote it - I like the mix of humor and dark things creeping. =)

ENTER THE WEREWOLF!

Event track of 3 spaces/event/3 spaces/event: PC token on track = = = I = = = I

  • PC’s gain a space when a wound is inflicted on the WW, someone attacks with a silver, magic, or blessed attack, or a ‘wolf pack’ is killed/chased off, three spaces are moved when a critical wound is inflicted on the werewolf
  • PC’s lose a space when any player takes a Crit wound, or is Knocked Unconscious

When the first event is reached the Werewolf let’s out a howl and uses his Vicious Leap to move to Medium range and attack a new target if one is present – otherwise will use the Leap to engage the least threatening target nearby.
The second event has the werewolf leap into the woods and disengages totally – his main goal is to spread the infection to some of the PC’s - any remaining wolf packs will run interference until he is clear of the area.

The ‘Narrow Forest Path’ location card is in play for this encounter.

Narrow-Forest-Path-Front-Face.png

Narrow-Forest-Path-Back-Face.png

Anyone leaving the Path is engaged immediately by a ‘Wolf Pack’ – a group of 3 Henchmen Giant Wolves – the sad result of previous Werewolf attacks and the plague in Rechtlech. There are four packs of wolves total – the GM is free to alter the size of the packs but there are a total of 12 Giant Wolf henchmen.

Hey - awesome card! Good job!

Yeah, very good, planing on updating it to hammerzeit?

One criticism note, however: the top paragraph should be in italics, to indicate its a description of the loctation.
but otherwise than that. I want that card!

Good gaming

Mal - Once it is complete I'm going to format it into a more usable form and upload it there!

Good point on the card I'll fix that on the final one!

The 'final draft' will contain all cards in Strange Eon form so you can print em. I did my best to give this location the tight, dreadful feeling of claustrophobic woods!

Good job, But I see you`ve giving him quite many action cards. According to the rules it is suggested that the maximum number of actions cards should not exceede his Expertise dice allotment. This was my outtake on him:

NPC ST TO AG INT WP FEL A/C/E Wounds Stance
The Silent Hunter 4[](9) 4[](2) 5(1) 3 3 3 5/2/2 14 R2
Action card Improved Parry, and Riposte. [] fortune dice

Reason I gave him melee action cards, was that he was described as a swordmaster. And in the context of the story he will only particpate in the story fighting a melee battle. But I think your version is better so I am copying that text right now.
next session we will begin playing ToRR&SW. I hope you will have my card ready by then gran_risa.gif

Good gaming

Sorry for the delay in updates on this - work has been swamped and I'm trying to catch up. Will have more soon!

Hi we start on this module today. So I am prepping and stealing all your notes about lycanthropy. Basically all your notes I take. But when it comes to the NPCs I make them my own. I see my hunter and yours are pretty much the same. However I decided to give him Advanced Parry and Riposte, since he is a swordmaster after all. I will start the encounter by him flinging the axe at the party (make a dodge roll to avoid the axe), than he unsling his sword, and grap the dagger. The Idea here is to create a duel where one of the party member will fight him. His sword is magical called Sword of the Wolf hunter. but will be cursed if not the party defeats the hunter in a fair way. The sword will give them a slight edge when fighting the werewolves later on.

Good gaming

I should have a solid update over the next few days I hope. =)

Mal - I like your take on the Hunter, my only suggestion would be to take Subdue instead of say...Riposte? As in the adventure it stresses that he is reluctant to kill off the party. So perhaps Improved Parry and Subdue?

Let me know how it is going so far - I would love to know if adjustments need to be made for the Werewolf fight! =)

Yes, please upload to hammerzeit (if you haven't already :)

jh

Since I'm not playing 3rd Edition (I've reverted back to 1st Ed again) I'm unable to understand most things discussed in here, but the posted worksamples look amazing. It's fun to see that there's still some life in the old witch. Good luck to all of you.

Best wishes

Mathias Ståhle

At the risk of being known for reviving old posts: did you ever finish this conversion? I'm pretty sure my players will love this scenario and Hammerzeit is down, so no chance of finding out if you ever posted it there in the end.

Yes, please, would love to see this updated!
