How is this different than the other Star Wars Roleplaying games from FF?

By Apophis775, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny Beginner Game

Just curious. I used to run a D20 Star Wars campaign based loosly on the DND 3.5 system from years back. Looking to see what from this would replace it, and which one fits best, so...

What's the difference between this one and Age of Rebellion and Edge of Empire? Are they different mechanics, or just different primary "sources" (Similar to End of the World being different "Settings" but the same gameplay)?

Are the resources cross-compatible?

How does it function, compared to the previous iteration of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game?

Thanks for any help and comments!

You're mostly right about it being based on different sources or settings, although all three are set during the same time period (between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back). Force and Destiny (F&D) focuses on Force-using characters struggling under the rule of the Empire, Age of Rebellion (AoR) focuses on playing Rebel characters, while Edge of the Empire (EotE) focuses on fringers and criminal elements (smugglers, bounty hunters, mercenaries, etcetera).

Mechanically, they are all totally compatible. There are specific rules that come packaged with each - Morality for F&D, Obligation for EotE, and Duty for AoR - but they don't really conflict.

How it compares to previous iterations is, well, a personal preference, although a lot will say it is better.

Interesting.
I'm actually about to run a short D20 Star Wars Roleplaying Game session soon, maybe I'll test this after.

FFG designed all three game lines to be completely cross-compatible, enabling groups to play characters using careers and specs from the different books and allowing them to mesh pretty seamlessly.

In the GM chapter of the AoR and FaD books, there's a brief section devoted to blending the different game lines together, as well as what accommodations to make/consider with regards to each books' signature "background resource, be it Obligation from EotE, Duty from AoR, or Morality for FaD.

Unlike the other prior Star Wars RPGs, Force users do not get to rule the roost in terms of what they can do, and until you start getting into the thousands of earned XP the balance of power between Force users and mundanes is pretty even; the Force users might have some flashier tricks, but the EotE/AoR characters have abilities that are generally more reliable, especially in the early going.

One thing that is very different from the d20 systems is that lightsabers under FFG's ruleset are very potent weapons, pretty much being able to bypass the soak values of most anything hit by one. The FaD lightsabers start out a little less potent than the EotE/AoR version, but with enough time and effort the FaD versions can be modified to replicate (if not surpass) the EotE/AoR 'sabers.
