I have a question about the phrase draw a card as a trigger action.

To complete many personal stories you have to draw two spells or draw three tomes for example and one of the Ancient Ones (Y'gonolac ) adds doom tokens for each tome drawn.

Now Y'gonolac's text states the tome must be drawn regardless of whether its kept or not.

So.. does drawing tomes while shopping trigger Y'gonolacs text regardless of whether the tomes are actually purchased. (our group rules yes on this one) but then as we were playing personal story cards we couldn't see that it would be that easy to complete the stories, for example can Dexter Drake just pop to the Magic shop reveal 3 spells buy 1 and then pass his personal story? (we ruled no on this one)

To draw, means "draw and keep" (as answered in the Official Answers by Kevin Wilson sticky on the first page). So if you're looking to draw 3 Unique Items (like Amanda Sharpe IIRC), 3 normal shopping trips can complete it, assuming you have the money to buy an UI each time (shouldn't probably be shopping otherwise).

so doe Y'gonolac abuse that rule as the rule book for kingsport horror states that the tomes dont need to be kept

Dam's right. I think that Dexter's personal story involves Tomes. If you're up against Y'Golonac, you should just consider the consequences of failure.

While the penalty for passing Dexter's story is high when Y'Golonac is the AO, at least he can try to pass it. In my last game Rita could never pass her story since there were no cultists to be found due to AO being Abhoth!
