Other formats? (tournament)

By Elkerlyc, in X-Wing

Hi all,

The 'standard' format is 100 points.

Nothing wrong with that in itself but I am looking for other (tournament)formats.

The only other format i am aware of that has been run is the escalation one.

Anything else out there tried and tested?

Or just a suggestion?

Thanks a bunch in advance.

Something more mission our goal driven where you score game points for completing mission our goals

300 point Epic.

101 point lists!

Each player brings 100 point rebel and 100 point imperial list.

If you ever played in a decipher star wars ccg it uses the same round structure.

Must have even number of rounds. Each pairing must be rebel list vs imperial list. Each play will play each list the same number of time.

Pairings get a little funky with odd number of players.

Has anyone experimented with lower points?

70-75 points or something?

Likely in combination with a maximum point cost per ship?

I don't like the absense of scum here... Scum for life.

I thought there was an alternate format thread before but searching is failing me...

59 point cross faction - 6 obstacles per person can't place them in deployment zones otherwise range 1 apart. 2 ship minimum, ships must be from different factions. All faction restrictions removed (vader on a scum party bus!)

Mario Kart xwing - many variants you have to search, although there are some "semi-official" looking rules out there with different tracks

Hunger games - many variants with regard to points, etc, but very fun!

The Collected Tournament Format Topic

Found it in the Index of useful links

My local store group often holds 200 point epic tournaments. Small enough that the rounds aren't too ridiculously long. Different enough from the standard 100 points to encourage lists that are not seen in standard tournaments - plus no one has the format 'solved'.

For instance, Palpatine is not as good, since changing a single die result is less valuable with double-sized squadrons. One can also fit multiple large ships in a list that wouldn't normally fit - fully tricked out Boba and Dengar (plus more!), all four IGs, etc.

A local store runs a pirate format. It's still 100 points. No unique cards or ships. You can only have one of any type of ship in the list and you can mix factions. Meaning you can't have two of the same ship. No having four royal guard ties. You can only get one. I think that is all the rules. It makes things interesting.

Officially seen Hangar Bay (have 2 squads, pick one at start of game, both reveal simultaneously) and Escalation (60 point squad , add 30 points each round)

It would be cool to have a tourney that is equivalent to a Magic match where you get a starter deck and two boosters. You could pick a faction and you get a randomized set of ships and cards that apply to said ships.

I would like to see some scenarios (not missions, which are a fine option) playtested and published by FFG or even a third party. We all know some ships or squads are better than others. So just use the 100 point basic squad as a starting point and adjust accordingly. (Just making up numbers and squads here)...so ffg playtests and determines a 112 point swarm of kirhanx and heavy Sycks are a good match to a 100 point triple defender list. The two players choose their side and if they both choose the same side they can bid points to give up so as to play their preferred side. Both players want the defenders, player 1 bids one and opts to give up a crack shot or mk2 engine or whatever. Player 2 bids two points and gives up a juke. Player 2 gets the defenders, less the juke and player one gets the scum list. I think such a format would be interesting as ALL the ships could be flown and players would not have flown the squad 100 times and know it inside and out.

the cool thing about x-wing is you can do what you want. yes 100 point is the standard but imho escalation is a lot more fun. also played in a 29 point free for all (one ship, last man standing). and 150 point mini epic. 2vs2 (200 points) and 75 points on 80cmx80cm are others I have seen

Try playing Escalation.

60 -> 90 -> 120 -> 150 pts, and you have to build on what you have from previously rounds. (I think it was official at one point).

People have to list build very differently, to plan their list for every round (unless they plan to drop 1 game for THAT combo) :-)

Great fun :-)
