I agree, it is nice to see, whether because it was contractural or FFG pointedly wanted to keep the same "feeling." What I haven't seen yet, though, are the play-on-word names in the German and fake-German styles.

'Soccer' is actually perfectly correct as the game rules were called 'Association Football' and 'soccer' for short. This term was used as most ball games were called 'Football' and the term 'Soccer' was used to distinguish Association Football from, for example, Rugby Football (or 'Rugger' for short). Though it pains me to admit it, but 'Soccer' is one word that our American cousins use correctly

Wow! Thanks for clarifying that. I did not know that soccer was the correct term. (and there is no sarcasm here - I really do like learning the correct way to say something.)

Thank Mr. Melvyn Bragg and his 'The Adventure of English' TV series (also a book, I believe). If you like learning about etymology than seek it out - its pretty interesting.

No-one in Britain calls it soccer though. I imagine the original intent was for greenskins to talk and act like east london (i.e. cockney) football hooligans and take it from me they would never call football 'soccer'. I think they just missed that one.

I was simply pointing out that the word 'Soccer' was the original British slang name for the game and as such is a British word. It is also a pretty good way to differentiate football from, say, American Football, Gaelic Football, Aussie Rule Football... the list goes on. The official name for our sport is still 'Association Football' in the statutes.

If they were going to use the proper slang though, they would call it 'footy' (or foo'y if they wanted the pronunciation)- at least if they were to please us in Merseyside...

Just thought it was worth mentioning that if they were going for British English they shouldn't have used soccer. You gave the impression that Brits use the term nowadays.

Bluenose. Been a bit of a rubbish season on Merseyside all round so far, though. But our performance against Arsenal was good so things might pick up, while they continue to slide hideously for Liverpool...
