Make your own cards : Strange Eons Extension v2

By Hurlanc, in WFRP House Rules

Easter Update tonight.

here is the change log :

- fixed r_b_bergstorm credits (sorry pal)
- Item Card : added defense/soak stat and pictogram.
- Item Card : when displaying pictograms or text stats, you can now choose which ones will appear (check the appropriate boxes)
- Item Card : added Sunatet/Willmanx house rule regarding durability. A track may now appear on the side of the card for players to keep track of their favorite items' state.
- Item Card : added a tintable colored background on the back side. I added very few different backgrounds, feel free to suggest new ones i'll be very happy to add them to the card.

IMPORTANT :

Item Card : i have an error with this card
"Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property "length" from null"
The card seems to proceed correctly though.
You may also have this error too. Please report if you do NOT have it.
I have no idea where's my mistake, i mail Chris to see if he has a clue (a clue token of course).

Here are two things.

I've downloaded the new extensions a hundred times, but they do not seem to run at all, it just keeps opening the old edition of Strange Eons with the old Plug-ins. How do I fix this problem?

Secondly did we ever get the card size fixed for the little cards, are they the right size now? They weren't in the old extension (way too small). If you did that would be fabulous.

Lastly, a request. I was playing around with the cards on Strange Eons the other day and find I like a lot of their features. For instance, the item cards from Arkham Horror have how many hands and a cost section (which could be used for encumbrance value) as well the smaller size increases play room. Yet there is no way to Banes or Boons into the old style interface. Can the Bane, Boon, Expertise die symbol and the rest be added so all of Strange Eons can use them. If it is too hard to mod the overall program, is there anyway to add them to the symbol section in Strange Eons, like you can Greek Letters and greater than/equal to signs. It would be a huge help as it would open up all of Strange Eons for our use and would give us a bunch of templates to use for various items, effects, etc. The border art, sure is not exactly warhammer, but its close enough most of the time that they work perfectly. We actually were using these before the set came out and had no problem with them what so ever.

So that's my request and one I think could help us all. Any suggestions on how to get the new expansions to load? And where should I download them from?

I had the same problem with the new extensions not being recognized. There is a hidden .strangeeons directory that caches the mod. The imported mods have the same core name (even if you rename the file). I had to go into the directory and manually delete the old cache. Then I did the install and it worked fine.

I also had problems with printing size. I changed the default orientation to 'Portrait' and it prints the correct size.

Hope this helps

Nez

Exactly like NezziR said.

I think that default folder for plugins installed is:

c:Documents and SettingsYour username.strange-eons-plugins

remember that it is hidden, so you have to turn option that allows you to see hidden folders, or use a program that allows it.

If you have the folder opened, then you don't have to install the new plugin, just replace the old file, and it will work (at least always work for me).

Now for the other things, I just started my adventure with SE, so I'm not sure, but I suppose, that adding dice symbols in form that Hurlanc is using them (they are images, not fonts, and require the use of proper function in every place you want the symbol to show up) may be impossible, because that would require redoing all the SE files containing cards code.

And again the same goes to symbol section of SE. If symbol section allows the use of images (no idea if it does), then it can probably be done, if not... well it can't.

Unless someone tries to add Froo's font ( members.iinet.net.au/~froo/wfrp/WFRP-symbols.zip ).

Try to ask Vendolis.

commoner :

as nezzir and sunatet said, it seems that double-clicking the extension does not actually work if a previous version is installed. Open the plugin folder and copy the new file inside to replace the oldest. I have a shortcut to that folder on my desktop :)

Considering extending Warhammer symbols to the rest Strange Eons, it would require to modify SE core files, beyond my reach at this point. I use images to convert tags inside the textboxes, a function in lib.js and every single file using these symbols call that function inside the code.
Even if i'd be using Froo's excellent font, it would be even harder (requiring to first register the font first inside SE core files before using it.)

If you have special requests (like adding optional single-hand both-hands tweak, good idea by the way) i'll be happy to add it in SE. You can also reduce printing size of the items cards if you wish. (I believe there's an option like that when exporting cards)

If you have issues with mismatched printing sizes, feel free to report, and i'll fix it. I thought i had a look to correct sizes and dpi when adding new material, but i coudl have missed something..

I think all item cards should have a tab for the number of hands it takes and the encumbrance value. I see an advantage actually that these could work front and back. For instance a hand and a half sword can be used both one handed and two handed. Instead of having two different cards, one card could be flipped from the two handed to the one handed variety.

Also, if I build a template for small combat cards, would you be willing to post it up. It would also be nice if the item cards had a picture spot on them so we can see what the weapon is, as a frame of reference and to enhance the visual appeal.

I will post up a mock-up using Strange Eons, some of the boxes would need to change, but otherwise it would be great on the big items and small item cards. I just prefer small cards because they are easier to manage on the table rather than a series of large cards.

Where I can I post the pic to post it on this website?

I think I got it now,

I think You will have to upload them somewhere on another server and link here using "Add/Edit Picture" in the text editor, filling the "URL address" field with the image link.

I didn't manage to find any other way for now.

Like this: pistoll.jpg

(if You see the picture of the image in the "Preview" window, it means, you did it right)

Hold on to your butts...

Ha, ha! It worked. This is the sort of lay out I'm thinking, The hand in the bottom left, the encumbrance value on the right. I could see this being used to calculate total encumbrance much quicker and easier to modify encumbrance if players start switching weapons. Also, the size is about right since it doesn't need to be huge with what little information goes onto a standard weapon card. This is only an example, and I'll make up an actual template (maybe two, but I don't see why this art is horribly unattractive to Warhammer to begin with. It is very Gothic in feel, very old world, very Empire.

Anyway, I'll see what I can do, but this was the best example I could come up with.

Also, if I sent you some custom designed cards, with special places with special numbers, can you make pop up/down boxes on them as well? I was just curious.

Woah, you stole my card! LOL!

Nah, just borrowed it for proper linking lengua.gif

But You linked it almost at the same time gran_risa.gif

Is there a way to add difficulty modifiers to the action cards on the monster sheets? In the rulebooks these appear beneath the action type symbol. There is a "Diff" slot on the form but when I fill it out it does not affect the sheet.

hmm, you're right that does not seem to work properly. Will fix it in next release.

Thanks! Also when I print my work how do I configure it so that it will print to a full page? Now it only fills half a page, which is fine (and looks great), but it's a little hard to read some of the smaller print. Tried clicking on "fit to paper size" from my printing options, but still didn't work. Any advise or knowledge?

I had to play around with the setting to get it right. Trying playing around with the orientation setting on the Strange Eons print window. It seems to default to landscape, set it to portrait.

You might also get a PDF print driver, if you don't have one, and print to PDF instead of paper till you get the settings right (save you some ink and paper). I print to PDF and send the cards to my players in that format.

Hi new release tonight.

here is the change log :

- Added location cards. Thanks r_b_bergstrom for the nice artwork. I thought original layout was a bit too simple so i included a way to have a track on the card itself. The basic example inside SE is a "Burning house". Of course, this track is optional, just set its length to zero if you don't want it. You can set up to 3 steps on it (set one to -1 if you don't want it)
- Minor tweak on the career card : the portrait is now built over the paper-like background if you wish to have both.( hat tip thelric)
- Major change on all cards : the tag panels are now full of clickable buttons ot help you lazy guys, juts click and it will add the approriate tag (hat tip thelric again)

Currently working on :
mini-item cards

Hurlanc - Thanks for all the work, location cards look great! Also just wanted to remind, monster card difficulty modifier is still not working.

NezziR - thanks for the printing suggestions, will look into them.

I'm experiencing some strange problems with "tint" (with this and previous version of plugin).

When I create an item card I get following errors:

Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property "length" from null
at uibindings:166
at uibindings:724
at uibindings:746
at uibindings:181
at uibindings:395

Uncaught The choice of Java constructor setHSB matching JavaScript argument types (null) is ambiguous; candidate constructors are:
void setHSB(java.awt.Color)
void setHSB(float[])
at uibindings:746
at uibindings:181
at uibindings:395

And after switching to the "back of card" view another one:

Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property "0.0" from null
at w3e/item.js:485

I checked the lines, but couldn't find anything unusual (but I don't know how exactly should it work either).

Strangely commenting line 248:

bindings.add("Tint", hsbPanel, [1]);

resolved the error.

Tint starts to work (with default color), but without the above bindings I cannot change the colors.

Enybody knows what it is about?

Im using SE 2.1 Alpha 7

PS: can I find any reference on Objects/Functions/Methods used in SE somewhere on the interwebs?

Amani : oops will fix it tonight.

Sunatet : yeah i have this error too. i can't figure out what's wrong. I released with this error because at home i got the error but still could use the card (with tints working and all). I think i'm at ahome with SE alpha 8 or 9, maybe check if it changes something.

new mini-release :

Change log :
- Monster cards : added difficulty display
- Career cards : added FFG-style abilities (switch with the combobox above ability textes)
- Action cards : added checkboxes on reckless side to use conservative values (for name, difficulty, cost, check).

have fun !

I don't see anyway to download the mini-release...?

sorry, the link is on the first page of the topic

Thanks, and thanks for all the work you've put into this.

I have fiddle with it to make action cards for the monsters, and it is simply brilliant, thanks for the excellent work on this, and hopefully we see more coming to make our GM work easier. Thanks again ...............
