Make your own cards : Strange Eons Extension v2

By Hurlanc, in WFRP House Rules

I bow for your infintive wisdom master Hurlanc!

This tool is godsent gift. Are your french by the way? If so Viva la France!!! Viva la Hurlanc!!!!

honestly, You do a tremendous job aplauso.gif

Anyone got any ideas how to change the eon. files into pdf files?

The way I am doing it now is to export them into image files like jpeg (more corrctly they becom zip.files which I have to unpack first), than have Adobe transform them into pdf. Which is a taxing process since I am talking about over 197 eon files.

any ideas?

ps: I am not an vey experienced in using either eons or adobe standard.

Mal Reynolds : thank you ! (yeah french)
for your pdf, install PDFCreator and then print into PDFCreator.

Salut !

Ludiquement,

D_57

Salutation!

I found an error when using the "Edit orginial image from the item card : java.io.IOException: Failed to edit the file:<name of the file(in my case a jpg)>.Error message:parametre incorrect.

i'm using the alpha release from Strange Eons ; maybe it could be part of the problem.

By the way, wonderful job! And you did it more quickly than I ever wish to do!

PS : Salut Dagon_57! Et merci pour ton aide, navré de ne pas avoir pu continuer...heureusement Hurlanc a fait de l'excellent boulot !

sorry i added the pics for 0, 5 and 6 but forgot to add it in the code :)

new file uploaded...

zuzul : hmmm never saw that error before. All pics i use are png, but i assume it should work fine with jpgs. the io error seems to be an internal java error, i'm afraid i'll be short on fixing this :(

Hurlanc : Error found. The function Edit image open MSPaint by default. (Et forcément, avec ma version pas top autorisée de Windaube.... gran_risa.gif )

Not a real problem, no need to fix it I think.

Hi all,

i've been advised tonight of FFG and GW decision to NOT validate this work.
I removed the file from megaupload at their request.
this thread may subsequently be closed.

Hopefully, i counted many downloads on megaupload filemanager so the tool started diffusing in the community before being stopped.

Have fun !

sadly, Hurlanc

This is said. Maybe we all posted some card FFG planned to sell with their expensions. gui%C3%B1o.gif

Dear FFG team: Are we allowed to post Cards that we made with Grafik Programms like Photoshop or Fireworks? Or have we to keep themfor private use only? I'm asking because I'm planning to create a little Fan-Website and dont't want to have any legal problems.

Same question for the FFG team : what kind of home made products are we allowed to do? it is just my point of view, but fan made products are the backbone for marketing an RPG nowadays (see WOTC policy on DD3) and knowing exactly what we can or cannot do will be great.

I say that's a pity because people here is always respectful of legal and properties questions.

RPGers don't copy the original material to pirate them through StrangeEons, they enhance the background and ruling with their personnal creation. Even If have bought the corebox, I even bought the pdfs of the same books to be able to properly use their contents in my GM's playbook...

Ok It looks like the official stuff, but that's because we love it. The only problem I saw about that was using copyrighted illustrations.

Really it's too bad.

This move really p... me off.

Was it about the use of the Artwork from the original cards? Or was it about eh possibility to create the cards? If it was about the artwork.. Can we just convert the tool to build cards with free available art work?

If the set of Icons free to use, so the pictures are not taken, but the Icons like the dice signs and the action card signs can be use? It would be nice from FFG to comment on this and tell the community how they should handle the situation where there are in many cases too few cards for actions are there. (Even with 3 ppl) And where someone wants to create soem new group templates, since non of the given ones really cut it for my group.

Or do I have to wait till you are finally done producing your expansions that in one year we can finaly play the game. Or are you suggesting that the number of location cards (which I really like) should be enough for everyone? Or should the GM only run games that are made by FFG? Then sadly you failed in providing them.

I though when I first started with 3rd Ed. that at some point you have to provide a tool to create custom cards. Is something like that planed?

This Extension was the best thing for me to get going with WHFRP 3rd Ed. Now the one Start review of the game at my local resaler becomes much more valid.

I hope you guys take a stand on this one soon.

Considering how long it took to FFG to check on this forum and discovering a 10pages thread (monthes...), they might be a little long if we ask their policy on this same forum....

I think FFG actually knew about the post for some time; they were awaiting advice from GW about how to proceed with the request.

It would be good to know exactly which aspect of the plug-in caused the issue, which presumably is down to breaking some kind of copyright law, even if inadvertently.

If that aspect of the plug-in could be removed, then perhaps it could be resurrected?

HI all,

FFG and i discussed a bit by email and their mains issues are :

1) Use of art without permission
2) Confusion between official and fan-made items

The art used without permission is all card layouts and scanned parts.

Additionnally, Designing new cards and effects is ok, but they're worried with people copying the cards and effects already in existing packs (like adventurer's toolkit).

If we want to go on with our SE extension, i believe we have to create our own design for all cards. My graphics designer skills are next to zero, so if anyone wants to photoshop something nice, it could help. Maybe it could be an occasion to discuss about what could be improved in official layouts.

I go on holiday tonight, for a week (we french always have bunches of holidays :) )

Cheers !

Is it possible that you put up the SE Extension without any graphics?

That would make it possible to use the framework you already build in SE to fill in our own graphics.

Does that include the graphics for the dice symbols and stance pieces? Without them, I really cannot see the point in trying to make nice-looking player made cards. I sincerely hope not.

The best thing would be if FFG would themselves release an empty high quality background for each of the card types that can be used by SE and similar applications. These backgrounds could have some signifying feature to let people know that it is player made and not official.

Have a nice holiday and thanks for the efforts you made before having to cancel the project!

You can easyly design look-a-likes that do not use their art. I started to think about how to transfer the general look into own art today. See if I find any time to try it out. But would like to have the framework of the cards Hurlanc created to not have to dive too deep into SE.

I am no real graphics person my self but have some ideas that I think I can accomplish with the rescources I have. And there can not be a copy right on the general structure of the card.

As long as no original Art (that includes background) and no original symbols (you redraw them all just a little different) there should be no issue at all with this.

We're currently in the middle of planing fan-rules for Mutations and Diseases at Hammerzeit! As there's no art for those kinds of cards I'm planing of doing the art for them during next week. This could solve the problem as I could build the new art from scratch and varie it for several different cards. Meaning that if they come out riight I could probably quite easily alter them in a way that we would have original art for each type of cards.

This and not using other art without permission should remove the problem that FFG (quite rightfully) is having with current edition.

back from Holiday, time to spend some time on a resurrect spell.

FFG is still working on its fanmade-resources guidelines, but we already know we have to create new arts for cards. Its a good occasion to discuss what to keep/change/improve/add/remove on these card layouts.

I think i'll keep this thread for the releases of the extension as before. I'll create a number of threads for that purpose.

Let's start with career cards : here

It's really a shame that FFG stopped this. Community creations have always been a big part of WFRP. On the other hand I do understand their view. Luckily I have the original copyrighted extension and it's loody brilliant. I will NOT use it to copy any cards at all, as I WILL buy expansions. Instead I'll use it mainly to create missing careers and spells until FFG get around to release official ones.

here you go, first release for SE extension v 2.0 - link on first page

i created Career card layout by myself using Gimp. The overall is not that bad considering my poor skills as a graphic designer :)

It's pretty close to the original layout, i wonder if GW will let it out ... Anyway, it's worth a try. Maybe i'll have to redraw something different after FFG will publish their fan-made-resources guidelines.

I put my name in the SE extension, not some kind of sudden French pride, but more a way to sort every version : I may add different layouts of career cards if other people send me their own design. i downloaded today Iffo magnificent action cards, and plan to implement them in the next release.

Back to this version, here is the change log :

- added Career Cards.
- i did not just change the graphics, i added a way to customize the card for non-english speakers, For instance : you can now change captions like "primary characteristics" in "Caractéristiques primaires" for french players
- i let down the built-in talent slots, to let the user customize it at will. Choose the colour, choose the caption and voilà.

Known issues :

- The advances part is not very cute,
- I kept (for the moment) the stance graphics, i hope GW will not sue me for that. I had no idea of what alternative pics i could do, if someone has any idea please pm me (or say it in this thread).
- all captions are not customizable (characteristics ..) i'll do it in next release.
- Some of the ideas in the Layout thread are not yet implemented >> later.

About stances you may still write as in the bestiary : C2/R2 i.e

Mates, how you make some decent creature cards. Which template do you use?

I think i'll emake this part more customizable so some careers may start at C0/R4 or C2/R3 or things like that
