FFG's done a really good job of balancing all the ships in the game such that each pilot of each ship can be played casually and give you a decent chance of winning the match. However, competitive play has, after 8 waves, developed its own rules about what pilots will give you wins. While that list is still enormous, there are some notable ships that have fallen away over time. This is a tribute to those ships.
1: Outer Rim Smuggler.
This wave 2 ship differs fro that of its named pilots in that it only has 2 attack and 3 less health. It has no EPT and costs 27 points. So its like a Lambda shuttle that costs 6 more points and equal durability. Since the arrival of the Contracted Scout, there is literally no reason to run this ship in a list, as the Scout gains an agility die, two torpedo slots, an EPT and an unhinged astromech slot for 2 points less, with the only price being 1 less hull.
2: Fel's Wrath.
More expensive than a Royal Guard pilot and without an EPT and a lower pilot skill than the RGP. Additionally, Wrath's ability is truly terrible.
3. TIE punishers.
Since the arrival of Gamma Squadron Veterans in the Imperial Veterans pack, the Punisher has become entirely redundant as an ordinance carrier, as it has a worse dial, lower survivability and poorer pilot abilities, all for at least 5 points more.
4. Generic E-wings.
Both the Blackmoon and Knave squadron pilots suffer from overcosting to the tune of about 2 points. In addition, they don't have the kind of dial that makes them excellent at anything, giving them the Jack of all Trades curse. Since the release of the Glaive Squadron pilot in the Imperial Veterans pack, there has been a far more superior superiority fighter in the game. I'm looking forward to Rebel Veterans where they fix this poor ship.
5. The X-wing.
The T-65 has gone downhill since wave 1, and sadly this means that the flagship of the X-wing game is one of the rarest ships in the game to see in competitive play (with the exception of Biggs). Jack of all Trades disease is present here as well, due to the lack of barrel roll or boost, yet a frame that isn't durable enough (even with integrated astromech) to take the punishment that slow ships get. Since the release of the Kihraxz fighter there has been no reason to use generic X-wings. Once again, I'm waiting for Rebel Veterans.
So, have I missed some crucial build that makes these ships great again? Do you think you could work them into a competitive list?
