WH40k gone from drivethru?

By Highlord Astavar, in Dark Heresy General Discussion

At last... Is this the game licenceĀ“s deathbed bell? And STILL no comment?

It's becoming very hard to deny the rumors... it must true.

I'm guessing they churned out Enemies Beyond as quickly as possible because of the looming license termination. It explains why it came so quickly after Enemies Without.

... Wow. They even took them down.

Sorry what rumors? I know it's been a slow churn but have FF given up the WH40k license? or has GW taken it back and going to give it to Black library again?

Nobody seems to know at this point Raven. It looks likely that GW will be taking it back but whether they give it to BL again is still unknown. The lack of any communication from FFG or GW is painful.

I just can't fathom what was to be gained by (or what was the legal necessity in) just pulling everything from DTRPG without a word. I get advertisement emails from them all the time based on what I've purchased in the past; so if they'd just waited until GW and/or FFG announced whatever the heck is going on and then notified people that they were going to pull the whole line... well, I can't be the only person who'd have probably scrambled to buy a few more titles.

Oh, well; at least they got Enemies Beyond out.

Well, looks like some friends and I will be collaborating on getting what we want put together from here.

Wonder if these forums are going to disappear too

Why would they?

While this is certainly not encouraging, let's remember that there may be another explanation: FFG may be moving away from offering their products on drivethru RPG!

For justification; please note that the Star Wars system has never been offered in digital format! FFG may feel that they lose too much money by selling thru a third party that undercuts their sales. Many of us, (Sadly, myself included!) have bought the vast majority of our stuff in digital format and this can't be helping the company's bottom line when they've got actual physical product sitting on the shelves!

It is also possible that they are preparing to offer a direct digital offering themselves and thus more completely capture that revenue stream!

Just some thoughts but I for one am hoping they're not shutting down the line! I was hoping they would at least do an update of RT to DH2/OW standard!

We'll have to see what their announcements hold...

Star Wars RPGs were never offered in digital format due to licensing limits set by Lucasfilm.

That doesn't change my point at all! Whatever the reason it was withheld from digital release, They might have found that their sales fared better without it!

Of course, looking at some of the more recent GW miniature releases, it is ALSO possible that GW intends to reclaim the license and return it to Black library. They may have felt that with FFG having the Star Wars franchise license, they have not been paying enough attention to the 40k IP. That might not be bad as I felt that Black Library was silly to give it up in the first place! Additionally, we might get some more mileage out of BL that FFG may not be able to provide (Horus Heresy RPG anyone?)

Who knows?

I was under the impression that FFG always offered direct digital sales through their website and had Drivethru to supplement their digital sales. Speaking of their website, you can't buy any 40K PDFs as they're all listed as unavailable but that might have been like that for a while.

As for the future, maybe with GW reviving Specialist Games they also decided to bring their RPG stuff back in-house. It could be a fantastic change but it does suck if DH2E gets cut off at the knees due to the shift. Or maybe we'll have the reverse of what happened with original DH where the earlier books were written by BL and the later were FFG.

Well, if GW takes it back then obviously they won't allow competition from games lines diverting income to a company without the license. Or at least I think it would be obvious, but I could be wrong.

Well, judging by the fact that both Drive Thru RPG and FFG's own website has removed the PDFs, I think its safe to say that we are definitely looking at the end of their 40k line. As sad as it is, I am also hopeful.

Maybe the new system (which there likely will be) will be just as good.

GW does not inspire me with confidence on this front, however. FFG will make something interesting out of this because that's What They Do when a license runs out and they have to repurpose design work, but GW will likely just tweak their same old stuff with little critical analysis.

I wouldn't be so negative this early. Remember that GW did get 2nd edition in Warhammer Fantasy running and I can't recollect any bad products from Black Industries for either Fantasy OR 40k. It could be ****, of course, but so far I haven't really seen GW mishandle the RPG media.

Its funny, for the first few FFG 40k series I'd definitely agree with you in that the later DH1E, Rogue Trader, and BC stuff was pretty inspired and added a lot to the lore and flavor of the series as a whole. However, your last sentence of "tweaking their same old stuff with little critical analysis" describes DH2E perfectly. I love the mechanical changes it brought, but in terms of content of enemies and items it was mostly just stuff brought over from 1E with a bit of balancing. By the release of Enemies Beyond, it was pretty clear that they've been just treading water in terms of adding original content...

Again, I love 2E but maybe this is the breathe of fresh air the series needs.

I know it ended being a refined edition of what was before, but for what it's worth, during beta they did intend to do an overhaul. Despite them messing up a bit, I still have more confidence in FFG than GW.

Yeah, if the community hadn't burned it to the ground, and they'd listened and worked on the major (mostly math) issues in it we could've had a very different game.

Maybe the 40K RPG license expiring in the near future (< 3 years) influenced their decision to cut their losses with the beta and just release a refinement of the previous rules with DH2E. We'll never know unfortunately. Such thinking would also explain the apparent lack of investment in finishing off OW as well as the rush in capping BC by merging the Nurgle and Undivided books together.

I'm hopeful for the future. I just hope something happens sooner rather than later because it might be a year or more before more 40K RPG stuff gets published. That's a heck of a drought for more Dark Heresy.

Well, in the worst case you still have the community. I've seen tons of great ideas come from this place, and many houserules that are better than the still-flawed RAW.

Who knows, if GW does take the license back, maybe we'll finally see Toughness Bonus as skin armour disappear and replaced by the Inquisitor system. :P

The price of the physical books is going to go through the roof for sure. :-(
