DarthTom's Painting

By tomkat364, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I really like how clean they all look. Also the freehand on your bases is just awesome!

Amazing work. Nice job!

Hello again!
Today I present my painted Mirklace Lieutenant. A bit of a rough sculpt, in my opinion, but I'm pretty happy with how he turned out. As always, more pictures and info at my blog, www.darthtomsgaming.wordpress.com

Aaaaand, bookmarked! Love your work. Fantastic photos too. Really wowed by the free hand base painting you do as well.

Nice work on all of it so far!

Hi folks! Back again, this time with some pictures of Skarn. This was a really fun miniature to paint, but some of the bits and pieces were incredibly confusing in form. I did my best to figure out what each component was intended to represent. As always, more pictures and details at my blog: https://darthtomsgaming.wordpress.com

Please let me know what you think, always appreciate some constructive criticism.

Nicely done. I hope mine turn out even 1/4 as good when I finally find time to paint mine. Been way too busy between work and school. Just a few more months...

Your Skarn and Mirklace almost look like pictures of concept art instead of actual physical models. Really liking the "cartoon" pop that they have on the highlights like near Mirklace's muscles or Skarn's cloth. I imagine this would really liven up the board.

One bit of sadness that I have, not about your painting, is that I initially thought Gargan Mirklace was just a floating demonic torso, oozing pure evil darkness, so hardcore that he didn't need the rest of his body. I thought he was the coolest looking lieutenant ever. Then after seeing him painted I realize he has these tiny little toddler legs completely disproportionate to his upper half...so disappointing. Deadpool 2 comes to mind every time I see him now.

you have a unique... pastel look to your painting style. It's very striking in many of the models. A few look a bit flat due to it, but over all very unique.

I'm so envious

Apparently I've fallen behind on posting here...
I've actually finished two other monster groups since Skarn, among other non-Descent projects. As always, more pictures and information are available on my blog, https://darthtomsgaming.wordpress.com/

First, the Goblin Archers...

And the Zombies...

Please take a look, let me know what you think. Always appreciate comments and critiques. Next up will be Flesh Moulders!

Here we go with some Flesh Moulders! This is the last small monster group from the base set, so Ettins will be next to finish it all off. Stay tuned.
As always, pics and details at my blog, https://darthtomsgaming.wordpress.com/

Love your work on these minis and your meticulousness in documenting the paint schemes and discussing the minis! I probably couldn't reproduce the super clean transitions and surfaces, even if I wanted to. 😅 Only the contrast on areas between lit and shadowy parts is a bit "flat" for my taste, but that's a question of chosen style. Cudos for putting quite a bit of effort into painting all these bases as well!

On these Etins there's only one part of the bases I think you could improve: The transitions between earth and snow. It may be just me looking at the fotos on a mobile phone, but to me, the snow doesn't read as a layer on top of the earthy ground immediately. I'm not sure how exactly to fix it either, but I'd probably try to paint a narrow fading out - maybe bluish tinted - drop shadow that's cast on the earth by the snow cover. It might enforce the impression that the snow is actually a cover on the earthy ground.

Also:

"It is my firm belief that boardgame manufacturers take a perverse pleasure in placing mold lines in the most detail heavy, hard to reach areas possible for the sole purpose of frustrating painters. In the case of the Ettins, this included the aforementioned neck wrinkles, the fur cape along the upper back, the wrapping on the forearm, the helmets, the horns, and all the fingers and toes. "

Tell me about it. Removing mold lines on Descent minis is a PITA. It doesn't help that the minis come pre-assembled, making some mold lines very hard to reach on top of everything else. But I get the impression that very few people care enough to spend considerable time on trying to remove them anyway.

Hello again,
Today we move on to the first of the core set heroes, Syndrael. Quite a bothersome miniature, what with muddy details and mould lines. Still turned out rather nicely, I think. As always, more pics can be found at my blog: https://darthtomsgaming.wordpress.com/

Awesome! You literally opened her eyes. I was really looking forward to see first hero from you and you didn't disappoint, really great as always.

Another update with a second hero finished! Unfortunately, had a bit of an issue with my clear coat, so the colors ended up a bit less intense then I wanted. But still looking pretty decent I think. fantastic job there , i dont agree with all the color choices but the detail on everyone is amazing .

I recently started painting the LOTR JIME figures after like 20 years of no painting at all and if i manage to get 70% of your details i will very happy .

Back again, this time with a Core Set lieutenant. The least threatening boss ever!!! Lady Eliza Farrow. Not a whole lot to work with on this one, but she is what she is.

I think she's hot! :D

Managed to finish another one, this time it's Widow Tarha from the core box. As always, more details and pics at my blog, https://darthtomsgaming.wordpress.com/
