How does RtL play with 3 characters?

By Chimpy, in Road to Legend

I've played RtL with a couple of groups of 4 players, and have great fun.

I have 2 friends coming round soon and I think they might want to play RtL as well. I wondered if anyone had any experiences playing the game with 3 players (each controlling only 1 character) and if it was harder, easier or different at all?

Hi Chimpy!

I haven't played with 3 heroes so far, but a lot of 2-hero games (with additional attack ruling of course), and some 4-hero games. It looks that 4-hero is more difficult, although this may be due to better team composition in two hero game. I would also like to hear other opinions about 2/3/4 hero balance as it currently stands :)

3 hero RTL helps a bit, since you still get to use the party limit for monsters.

There are a few quests where it goes wonky, though, where the App tells you to place a large monster even though the master is on the map, and it does not say whether or not you should be disregarding group limits...

As always, player discretion Is required.

I don't feel great about 3 heroes. Reason being is that during monster spawns I'd rather have 1 more minion than 1 less hero. Going from 3 > 4 usually adds one more minion, but to get a full other heroes utility and damage output is a big deal. For large monsters it's a little worse because 1 more large minion is worse than going from 3 Goblin Archers to 4, but I still think you can get the most balanced party out of a 4 hero group. I haven't tried it though, this is just my feelings about 3 heroes.

Most of the monsters spawns in the RTL follows the group limit, that its not a big problem. Played yesterday with 3 heroes, really interesting experience, needed a little more coordination by the heroes, but in the end we got a high sense of cooperation. Its a trully fight side by side experience.

You're missing my point. I'm saying that 4 heroes vs 5 Goblin archers is a better match up than 3 heroes vs 4 Goblins Archers. But I agree with the latter part of your post, I think 3 heroes starts to get pretty good once the gears are turning seeing as you don't come into the campaign with most of the areas covered as you would with 4 players.

My group plays RTL as a 3 hero group, and we've found it to be smooth playing.

And in reply to JulianLeite , the difference between 3 hero/4 monsters and 4 hero/5 monster is better for the heroes, but when you have multiple monster groups spawning at the same time, that difference tips the other way fast.

And if you're playing 3 and you're lucky, you can get groups of Large monsters (1 master instead of 1 master 1 minion or groups of monsters where the limit is less than 1 master 3 minions.... The balance goes back to the heroes in such cases.
