New Investigators for upcoming expansions

By GAThraawn, in General Discussion

There has been much speculation regarding what FFG will do once they release the last of the Arkham investigators in this game (which at the current pace will be three expansions from now; one more large box and two more small boxes). Will they call 48 good enough and stop? Will they stop adding content entirely (Come on, this is FFG, what do you think?). Will they make up new investigators?

Well, today's trailer for Mansions of Madness, a game that to my understanding currently only has a fraction of the Arkham investigators, showcases some completely new investigators. What better way to introduce some new investigators into FFG's Arkham canon, to pave the way for their inclusion into other expansion products?

Say hello to Father Mateo (The Priest), Agatha Crane (The Parapsychologist), Preston Fairmont (The Millionaire), and Carson Sinclair.

Good spot. Carson Sinclair looks like the Butler to me.

But Aschan Pete??...Someone love him?

Agreed. Definitely the Butler (which will make his inclusion in other games like Eldritch a little weird... but I'm all for it!).

To be honest, they all seem a little too "on the nose" in my opinion. I'd rather see a spiritualist or a spirit medium/con artist (as there were many during the 20's) than a parapsychologist (a term that sounds relatively "new" to me) and "Millionaire" seems a bit bland whereas Jenny Barnes's 'dilettante' seems more apt somehow. The priest is fitting, but we already have Sister Mary. I hope the backstories are good. I can't even recall if Mansions has much a backstory listed for the investigators anywhere. It's been a while since I played it.

Happy to see new investigators, but until we see more about them, they don't feel like they mesh with the existing ones somehow (at least to me). Maybe over time they will. I've just spent so much time with the old crew that maybe the newbies would all feel this way despite their backgrounds.

The fan expansions 8 thematic investigators, 16 Custom Investigators and Lovecraft Country Horror both featured a selection of archetypes that weren't really explored in AH. The latter even had a priest and a butler (albeit the latter having more than a passing resemblance to the works of PG Wodehouse rather than H P Lovecraft). Angelina and Alexander Thorne were two of my faves (incidentally I made the 8 thematic ones). Angelina's mechanics always oozed with flavor; there is something about corruptions that feel very impactful on theme. Thanks for sharing.
