All armour, weapons and items plus variants thereof available are approved by the Omnissiah and any modifications to that may be considered blasphemy to the machine god!

In all seriousness though if you wanted to go with it then it may be plausible but there are no rules for it. It may take time, spending XP on specialised skills at your discretion etc.

Just start reading the books. Page 24 of the "First Founding": Artificer talent and Fire-born solo mode ability of Salamanders are an examples of allowed customisations to sacred Astartes gear.

From what I remember: Fire-Born solo mode allows to remove a negative attribute of a piece of equipment or add a positive one. Artificier talent allows you to raise the quality of a piece of signature wargear by one step for each time you take the talent. Salamanders can take the artificiert talent up to three times. But there might be more to it in regard of customization in the description.
