I really like the character and monster stands that come with the game, the problem is...there's just not enough of them. If there's 2 groups of Gors, I want to have 2 stands of Gors to show - not 1 Gor and 1 Misc. as you have to now. To rememdy this, I've been considering using Warhammer miniatures, but my wallets absolutely HATES this idea lol. What's everyone elses plan?
Anyone planning on using minis with the game?
I'm using minis. Fortunately, I already have tons of Warhammer figs from 24 years of playing Warhammer and WFRP. Even after all these years, the problem for me is the lack of humans. I have tons of Orcs, Goblins, Trolls, Skaven, Chaos, etc., but most of my human figs come from the Empire army, so I'm lacking random NPCs.
I noticed a while back that GW is planing to release a bunch of Empire citizens!
I'm going to just create as many standups as I need with Strange Eons and use them. The program exports images in just the right size for printing in 300 dpi, so I can print a dozen or more of them on one page, paste it on cardboard using a spray glue, cut them out, paste the standup backs in the same way, put them in plastic bases and voila! No minis needed, ever.
I've always felt that miniatures add immensely to the visual impact of your games.
That said, having a miniature on hand for every encounter is not only prohibitively expensive, but also consumes an enormous amount of time.
My compromise is miniatures for PCs and very important/recurring adversaries/NPCs and stand-ups for everyone else.
fwiw, I have a large mini collection which is my pride and joy and has been assembled specifically to play WFRP with. I can usually manage a suitable figure for any sort of PC or foe. And I've nearly always used minis in my past WFRP games. But for whatever reason I just haven't used them at all for WFRP3.
For me it's the complete opposite - I don't own any minis at all (tabletop battles aren't really my thing, and my group doesn't use miniatures in RPGs), and given the costs of WFRP v3, I don't see myself buying them either. I'd also have to buy paints, brushes, actually learn how to paint them, and the minis would still probably look like crap. I prefer finding some good artwork and making it into cardboard standups. Also, the board game-y bits in v3 remind me of Arkham Horror which uses the same kind of standups, so I think substituting them with miniatures would feel a bit awkward. Not to mention that, in my opinion, the standups convey the abstractiveness of battle system better than miniatures. Same thing as with tokens used in tactical board games - it's easier to wrap your mind around a cardboard token representing an unit of enemies than a detailed, 3D miniature depicting just one character. Also, you can just as well make standups depicting multiple opponents.
I've pulled some old mordheim warbands out to use the minis - bit more variation then the old unit models
I've tried making WH tabletop armies several times, but I always get tired of painting the same guys over and over again, so I think this is the perfect opportunity/excuse for me to just buy various minis that I like and paint them.
We use minis for the PCs and many of the monsters; most NPCs use the standups. Some are painted, most are not.
I will be using mins also but what do i use for a jabberwok??
I will be using minis but as per the book, generally I will use one mini to represent potentially multiple creatures (like Henchmen).
I went and picked up a box of 20 Beastmen (which is WAY more than I need) so I've got some ungors and gors. And a small box of Chaos warriors (3) so I've got some of those. I HATE the look of WH goblins/orcs and have a bunch from LotR's which I prefer so I will use those instead. I have creatures for chaos daemons but I really do like the look of WH ones and saw a kit for a neat bizarre pair the other day. I will probably cave and pick that up.

yes!
our trollslayer has converted the Slayer from the Skull Pass box to use for his PC. our wizard has a mini as well. The others are catching up!

Blasphemy! Warhammer greenskins are so cool looking, much better than LotR "orcs" which look way too much like people for my liking.
Seriously though, I do plan on using many of my miniatures in my games. I was going to use minis for the PCs, but for some reason I can't see my players wanting to purchase/paint minis to represent their characters. So, I will most likely do the opposite of most and use the standups for the PCs and models for a lot of the enemies.
I have to disagree with Ferozstein as I don't think that it is easier to wrap your head around one standup representing a group of enemies when you could use multiple minis to do it better. I understand that it is hard if you don't have the minis and that the system itself is abstract, but lets say I have a unit of 4 ungor henchmen. Using my minis I could have them placed together in a square formation (as they are on square bases) and easily move them together in a group. When enough wounds are caused to kill one henchmen I just remove a model. This helps with all the bookeeping associated with henchmen which is their biggest drawback IMO.
Looking at the bestiary in the ToK I can already see that I have models representing almost every single creature entry and if I don't have something that is an exact match I have plenty of models that could stand in just as well. As someone mentioned before I think models do a lot to increase the immersion in the game, even if WFRP is more abstract than many games that require battlegrids and the like.
I'll certainly be using minis instead of standups.
BTW, what are you all using for a terrain area with the minis ?
Lets say the group encounter an enemy in the woods, do you use some kind of a drawing board to illustrate the road, trees... and then move the minis on it ?
i play fantasy battle so i could use woods, fences, buildings, towers, hills and ruins i have for that, but i will prob stick to using the cards keeping it all more abstract.
I'm only using minis in place of the standees. As the existing system is abstract, there is no need for terrain or maps. The minis are only used to show relative positions and ranges. I will describe the setting. If a picture is necessary, I will sketch a rough layout on a small piece of paper, but I will not be using terrain or maps drawn to scale of the minis as I don't want to have to define ranges in scale. Since there is already so much other stuff on the table for this game, the beauty of the abstract system is that two minis with 3 counters between them are at long range, but don't take up more than a few inches of play area. With a scale map, you have to start positioning figs halfway across the table to represent long range and that really isn't necessary in this system.
I plan on using a mix. I have a collection of minis. I do plan on keepong the abstract "terrain" cards. I like that idea. It is possible to even construct your own.
I think there is great scope for homemade card stand ups. Also FFG will probably release some mega counter sets in future. Its an obviuos product gap to fill.
Our first run of the game, where we ran the demo scenario for three of my four usual players, we used the abstract system. While it worked, I think my group really missed their tactical game board, so this weekend we are going to run a variation of "False Pretenses" using a simple tactical map. Each manuever will allow for 6 inches of movement, and the range increments will remain the same, we can tweak them as we go, if need be.

A wild Random boast appears! I created these guys for our try-out one-shot for tomorrow night. Swords for hire to the rescue!
Norscan mercenary:
Bright Wizard and Barber-Surgeon (who really doesn't look much like a barber-surgeon anyway)
Woman thief (who was made from an ages old musketeer figure with a beard...)
Go minis gogo!
Nice figs doc! I love the tattoo work on the Norseman.
There's a Heroquest Boardgame sitting in my grandparent's vacation cabin, and I don't think it's been played for a decade. Hopefully, I can perma-borrow it from them when we're there for New Year's Eve. That'll have me covered for greenskins, undead, and chaos warriors (and Fimirs, of course)
As for the rest, I've got a bunch of Fiery Dragon D&D monster counters. Satyrs for beastmen, Wererats for skaven, and so forth.
