n00b question..

By Odinson, in X-Wing Off-Topic

so firstly I'm not even really sure where to post this, apologies if this is not the right place...

secondly, while I am brand new to X-Wing (the game hasn't even been delivered yet  ) I have been a table top mini gamer for 30 years (****, getting old...) and I just want to check something, so here's my question...

at X-Wing events and game nights etc is there any unwritten etiquette I should be aware of in terms of "broken" combinations of cards/ships/pilots which are allowed in the game but generally frowned upon?? I don't want to turn up with some cheesy/beardy/powergamer combination if the etiquette is generally not to. At the same time, I don't really want to turn up with 8 rookie tie fighters and get my ass handed to me by some cheesy/beardy/powergamer type with a broken combo of their own...

so, is there an unwritten ******-bag rule I need to know about? :D

Welcome :)

This would go best in the General Forums but I'll answer anyway.

Generally no. The Tie Phantom was kinda seen that way but it's been nerfed a bit. There's always the current hotness, which some people don't care to play against. But if you're just starting that's not an issue.

X-Wing is fairly well balanced so you don't see the kinda power lists you do in say 40k, where you have lists that are so OP'ed that provided you aren't brain dead you can win in the first round with them...

Ok that's actually not completely true, but X-Wing is better balanced. So show up with what you got and you should be fine.

OK, thanks - if a mod wants to move this to another forum then please do so. Can't wait to get a few games in.. :)

thanks.. and of course the first thing I click on is Shapeways.. gosh darn, it's going to be an expensive year..

You can also choose to (or not) avail yourself of the massive debate around what is generally called "Fly Casual" - that is where you will find strong opinions on the "unwritten rules" of d-baggery in X-Wing - ie play to win or play for fun.

Welcome!

Frowning on lists is generally frowned on.*

*Local results may vary.

Welcome first and foremost to a new crack addiction.

Second whatever you play be polite and treat people well and it really doesn't matter what you do. It's more about sportsmanship and enjoyment, as stated above there are no illegal combinations or and spoken rules. Just be excellent at being a good sport

Just have fun. Fly casual.

The wrong place would have been in any other game forum really, although Mansion of Madness does need some more lurv.

Probably depends on where you live, what the "etiquette" is for playing the game. I stopped playing years ago since all I could play was in battles where it was the "rule" to have the fleets dictated by number of ships, no point values period. Not fun really. The place closest to me is dead now anyway.

JFYI I am assuming you just have the first starter set? You'll be at a disadvantage for 3 reasons.

1)First time playing, kinda obvious.

2)More tactical options available to the players you are playing against, because they probably own more sets than you do. This is kinda obvious as well.

3)A not so obvious reason. There technically two starter sets now, the newest one has SW ep 7 minis in it. It has a much more up to date damage deck in it. The damage deck, when causing critical, is different and arguably more dangerous. I have seen on the forums people fighting over "MAKING" people have to buy the newer starter set, to use the newer damage deck. However so far its legal to use ether one.

You might run into someone like this.

I kinda mentioned it, you can also use custom minis only in non turny play. You can use repaint in turnies though.

thanks for the heads up BKL, that was EXACTLY the kind of info I was looking for.. I've dropped close to $300 on eBay in the last week, so I'll have a bunch of ships to pick from no matter what faction I choose to play. I completely agree it's going to take a while to get to grips with the game, especially some of the more complicated rules - I game primarily for fun. I've won my fair share of table top events in other games, I'm in my 40s now, so I just want to hang with nice peeps and blow crap up for the most part. I will most assuredly fly casual.. :D

this is another noob question, so rather than start another thread I thought I would just continue here instead...

it seems as though base size is crucial to have correct, but "peg" height is not - it's OK to have ships on various heights (and colors) of bases provided the correct size of rectangular base is used, correct??

Are you thinking repaint of the official FFG bases? they have two protrusion's at the front and rear used for moving the ships this is an integral part of the game and bases as otherwise the movement can be off and give you an unfair advantage (i.e in arc or not)

they do have some nice looking official coloured ones "on the boat" but when they are due to become avaliable is a much debated topic at the moment

I wasn't referring to the two "nipples" on the base, I realize they are crucial to the movement phase. when I talk about the "peg" I mean the clear plastic vertical piece which holds the ship in the air and makes it look as if it is in flight - I have seen some ships on single height pegs and some on doubles, as well as pegs which were black rather than clear. that leads me to believe that the height of the peg is purely an aesthetic choice at the discretion of each gamer.. right??

Yes it's just aesthetics really. The tournament rules do say that the ship must be on a peg the whole game, but doesn't say how many or what color it should be.

perfect, thanks..

I have another n00b question.. the Firespray/Slave 1 and Hawk/Moldy Crow can be used by more than one faction, but the ships only appear to come with pilot cards for Imp/Rebels respectively.. if I wanted to run a Scum fleet with both of these ships, how do I get appropriate pilot cards/upgrades - were/are they sold separately??

you'd need to pick up the box set Most Wanted. It has pilot cards, tiles, dials, ect... For the S&V HWK-290 and Firespray.

awesome, thanks! :-)
