Hi all ..
I was annoyed having to rearrange my figurines box each time we move it around, because all figurines where falling over..
Some figurines are just a bit 'off' (center of gravity-wise), and almost fall over spontaneously, it doesn't need a strong wind.. :-)
As they are all painted now, I needed a solution to keep them from scratching each-other.
I liked the foam solution, but as they all have another base dimension, it doesn't make it practical at all, to cut the bases out, or to add the new ones when a new extension comes out ...
So, I needed a solid, sturdy, easy, modular solution .. and then I realized, mother nature gave us Magnets, why not use them ?!
Looking around for what exists, I ended up with this idea:
- 2x 'magnetic sheets' (A4 format) .. the kind the kids can decorate and put on the fridge.
- 80x Magnets, not too strong, but strong enough .. :-D
- 80x washers to put around the magnets, to fill the rest of the base.
- A good strong glue (usually Gel based) .. that can glue metal and plastic.
The idea:
Beware that the washers have a 'direction' .. if you don't want to scratch your board, keep it in mind:
just a small test, before replicating to all figurines:
(does the glue take?, is the magnet strong enough for the weight of the figurine?, ..)
Looked ok, so I went on to do them all.
Another advantage is that it makes the pieces a bit heavier, meaning that even on a non metallic/magnetic surface they stand stronger than before.
After this, all I needed to do was to cut the magnetic sheet to the dimension of my storage box. And also cover it with a really fine felt (the bigger, the less attraction of the magnets).
In case someone wants to see the result, here's a small (33Mb) video of a swinging, shaking figurine-box. (I advise to download it locally before playing it)
