The various ways to make money.

By |Alex|, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hello everyone !

Well, my name's Alex, I'm new here ;) and, even though I have already played several times, I believe I'm still a noob when it comes to Arkham Horror. In fact, that's exactly why I've registered happy.gif: I would like to benefit from your understanding of the game (which is certainly not the simplest ever made) gui%C3%B1o.gif.

So, here comes my first question. When we play at Arkham Horror with friends, I very often get Ashcan Pete, the Drifter, which is not so bad, as this character is very good at sneaking, BUT who starts with only $1.

What I would like to ask you is: what are the various ways/mechanisms existing in the game which permit you to gain money?

Because, for example, in our last game, I was doing pretty well (he had had some portals sealed, was blessed,..), but at some point, I've encountered a quite strong monster (and had, basically, no weapon, but still my $1) and after this fight (which ended badly for me), it tooks me many many rounds to recover from the injuries (just because the hospital was too expensive).

For what I've understood by myself:

- There is the bank loan (but I'm not sure I understand exactly, because if you need $10 to get over it, well, you need to gain money for this loan to be profitable in the end) > I've never done that;

- You can become the Deputy of Arkham (but being blessed is more important, I believe > am I wrong, there?);

- There is the card "retainer" but I don't see exactly how to obtain it;

- Anything else?

[Of course, there are also characters which are lucky enough to gain money at the upkeep (Janny) and, theoretically, one can also gain money at various places if one is lucky enough (but sometimes, you have to pay instead: e.g. the library).]

I thank you very much in advance for your answers :D!

The newspaper is a good place to get a job (retainer) as well as other money.

The administration building has a few jobs and money making opportunities.

You can sell your trophies at the River Docks, though I don't remember every doing that.

I've made money at Hibb's roadhouse and Velma's Diner, but I"ve also lost money there.

With all the late breaking news about aliens wandering the streets, the newspaper is the best place to go.

With the expansions there are other opportunities, but the newspaper is never surpassed as the go to place.

The Bank Loan is dangerous, as you point out. At 5% interest per day you can end up losing everything pretty quickly. If you are going to borrow then you better be sure you're going to get a job. On the other hand, Jenny always gets a loan!

Oh, yes indeed, the newspaper seems to be an excellent place (I've just checked the cards)! I had never noticed it before, as none of us has ever been there ^^. So, thank you very much! Thanks to you, the game will certainly become even more entertaining for us all gui%C3%B1o.gif.

About extensions, I only own the "Curse of the Dark Pharaoh" but we have never tried it yet (we are afraid it might make the game even more complicated and we might not be ready for that happy.gif).

NB : if someone else as another tip, I would be pleased to hear it as well but this one is already great :D.

If your Lore and Will are good, the Admin Building is nearly as a good as the newspaper.

Sharing is good. Try and get Pete money handed out from someone elses pocket early on, $2 should be easy to scrape together in the first turn.

With the Bank Loan, there is a cheesy trick, but I wont be the one to tell you about it :) Instead, Ill point out that the risk diminishes the later in the game you are to taking it out. If you are battered early on, its probably best to stay away from the Bank, and just scout around the town (in the aforementioned places, or any place that has a money icon on the board). If you get crunched later, chances are you wont default on the loan before the end of the game.

Id disagree too that being deputised is not as good as a blessing, simply because it solves your mobility issues. The income is just a trickle, the real bonus is the patrol wagon, but its less useful if using just the base game.

On the expansion boards, there are more locations that offer reliable sources of cash.
