LOUD NOISES!
Many Bothans died to bring this to you
Wow lots of stuff in this thread.
I have a few thoughts:
Generally I am opposed to strong Female Leads in ACTION films because it can Distort Gender roles and therefore Family Values (mom should be mom and dad should be dad after all) and also I think that Mother is the MOST IMPORTANT and valuable Job achievable by Mankind (well not MEN but... You know what I mean) so Women should strive to become Good mother's and as A Man our job needs to be to Support them and protect them so sometimes these Female Leads reverse that role which IMO belittles Women and encourages them to be less then their Full potential (a.k.a. stoop to Tue level of us undeveloped men
) Anyway that's all I'm going to say on this matter
-Okay, regardless of the things you said later, there are a TON of things wrong with this sentiment. EVERYONE has EVERY potential, to BE everything. There are a ton of women out there who don't want children, and thanks to this dumb-f@$% opinion they are constantly judged and bombarded with questions, not to mention having their choice, their preference constantly belittled and/or dismissed due to the prevalence of this opinion. Being a mother HAS been the best thing in my life, but is not the peak of my aspirations. It wasn't all downhill after my son was born, like I'd peaked, and that **** sure won't be true when he goes off to college and/or moves out on his own. If anything "belittles women" it is this slavery-like idea that motherhood is our greatest aspirations, and that anything "less" is a waste.
- Then there's the implicit dismissal of male full-time parents in your statement. You realize that when men complain about the unfairness in custody law, this sexist drivel is the cause of that unfairness? Not to mention that this sentiment implicitly releases fathers from caregiver roles and turns them in to de facto support machines. It also perpetuates the idea, or perhaps is just caused by it, that men shouldn't form as deep a social/emotional connection with others, including their children.
- What "belittles women" is this crap you're espousing.
As for Ray being a Mary Sue, Generally I don't like Mary Sue characters But, this is Star Wars, and Star Wars has this All powerful Space Magic called the Force which justifies a Force sensitive being better at most things then normal people as they are basically Superhuman. And Ray is clearly a Powerful Force user so her skills are Justified IMO
Edit: I do want to add that I am ok with Occasional female leads but they shouldn't be to prevalent
-Enlighten me, oh exalted man. How prevalent is too prevalent?
Edit #2: I also must say Ray is still My favorite character in film right now
-...just so long as it doesn't occur too often.

@Admiral Theia Do you want this thread to get locked or?

Not particularly, but qu sera, sera. I was gone a bit, and I wanted to respond. I'm a self described SJW, I don't often let this kind of stuff slide, let alone in a place that's supposed to be part of my recreation.
Darn auto-correct. "Que sera, sera"

There's this horrible fine line to tread with things like that. Whilst the thread ought to be about 'Rogue One' and I think you and others are right to try and keep it on topic, if other people, including myself, have made comments around the matter, it's important for everyone to be able to have their say, otherwise you come close to "silencing" people - using a fairly "rational" excuse to shut someone up. So, let's say someone makes a nasty remark about Jews in a conversation, and another person challenges them on it, it's unfair if someone then says "this conversation isn't the place to discuss anti-Semitism" - the discussion was started by the person who made the nasty remark, so the conversation either stops there, or it's open to response. It's reverse-Schrodinger - the cat is either locked in the box or it's let out, it can't be both.
It's a bit like being at a party, chatting as part of a group about films and things, and someone says "Star Wars sucks and anyone who likes it is an idiot." Then their mate chips in, saying "Yeah, I know what you mean, those Star Wars geeks are terrible people," then you start speaking in defense of your favourite movie and the second guy says "Woah, this isn't the place to discuss Star Wars, we're talking about films in general, you should stop arguing about Star Wars or you're going to kill the vibe."
Not saying that's what you're doing, but that's why it's important to be conscious of silencing people - it's easy to do without even realising, and can be rubbish for someone whose feelings have been hurt by comments already made.
That being said, I started a thread in Off-Topic for exactly the discussion of sexism / feminism both on these forums and in general - that's probably a better place for the conversation to continue anyway:
Thank you.
Wow, why do I keep clicking this thread? It's like the people that can't help but slow down and look at an auto accident. I know when I click, I'm just going to see more of people shouting at each other in the mistaken belief that they are doing anything other than annoying the rest of us who are foolish enough to keep checking the thread. Anyone know how to report a thread to get it locked, because this NEEDS to be? It has gone beyond civil, it has gone completely off topic, and it has no place here.
I'm sorry, I'll bring it back onto topic for you, Xindell.
Hey guys, I'm excited about Rogue One. I just wish that main chick would raise some kids through the whole movie and leave the rebellion to the menfolk.
Edit: But seriously, jhox made a really good point.
Yes, Jhox madde a good point, but I'm not trying to silence anybody. I'm just trying to say "Hey, if you don't take this somewhere else, FFG will silence you and everyone else who wanted to actually discuss the original thread."
I'm extraordinarily excited for this movie! I can't wait!

You make it sound as if the locking of this thread would be like "millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced."
Would it be so terribly horrible if someone had to take initiative and start a new thread about Rogue One?
No, I just want to still have quiet, ninja mods, instead of having 'visible' mods.

I think we have 'absentee landlord' mods. They only come out of the woodwork if they see a lot of 'Report' clicks being made, and then only once someone gets around to checking the inbox.
Well, someone locked the other one, so maybe not so 'absentee', and just as I was warming to a rebuttal.
[ADMIN: Post and link removed. There's no need to spark additional, unrelated arguments.]
I'm hoping for some new Rebel capital ships to appear, if only for Armada sake ![]()
The argument form sucks, but the point is still poignant:
Can you *stop*, please? The other forum got locked for a reason.
The argument form sucks, but the point is still poignant:
You know, I'm starting to feel like this forum would be a better place if you got banned. You are being extremely opinionated and even when others were willing to drop the subject, you take the argument elsewhere.
1) I know woman often are unfortunate victims of sexism and I imagine it must be difficult and hurtful if you are unable to enjoy your pastimes without this abuse. If you (or any other woman) ever attended a gaming night (or a similar event) for the first time where I was in attendance I hope I would be the first to shake your/her hand and prehaps be the first to offer you a game.
2) You (and the other anti-sexists on this forum) are refusing to let other people have their own opinions (demonstrated by your continuation of the argument and by the way you are constantly trying to shoot everything down that goes against your beliefs). Instead, you are holding steadfastly to the belief that you are correct about all your views (especially on your "linkage" between Christiantity and Sexism, which I totally disagree with, but my views have already been voiced by others, so there is absolutely no point in wasting my breath repeating what has already been said, which is one thing you are failing to recognise by your repeatition of the same things).
3) In addition to the above, you do not take into account that there are people on here (like me for instance) who have no desire what so ever to discuss anything other than a galaxy far far away . If you want to continue ranting against Sexists, feel free, but please do it somewhere where either everyone shares your views or the people that don't are not within earshot.
4) You resort to lavish usage of bad language (especially on the locked thread) to try and get your points across.
5) The people who are actively anti-sexist on this site (ei. going round attacking different opposing viewpoints) are acting as a giant wedge to the forum, splitting it into two sides of people with different views. This whole introduction of sexism has worsened the condition of this forum, not improved it. It would have been better if that topic had not been disturbed on here, IMHO.
6) After you reverted back to the original topic on this thread ( I think it was Star Wars themed originally) you then brought the whole thing back up again with your last post. Please just stop.
7) I have no problem whatsoever with a woman playing the lead role in any film.
8) My view is that each and every one of us are absolutely 100% entitled to their own (sometimes wrong) opinion.
Please can we let the subject of sexism drop on this forum and topic, resolve our differences, and all be at one with the force?
