It's still viable, sir. Just a different approach now.
If you're talking about chessgame control, that is ind33d a thing of the past.

It was like... the only US event you ever went to...
And from the looks of it the only event I ever will unless I actually get a job I'm "partially" trained for.
I will post two small stories from the first event I went to.
We had pre release sealed event on shadowar and soulcal
One of my friends got the Ivy starter, and did pretty well game 1.. played so many attacks that he needed to reshuffle and remove 10 cards.. (all of the removed ones where attacks) well he wins game 1
Game2
He does a mulligan because he only drew attacks. 2 turns into the game he starts swearing about that he never draws attacks. Fun part? He forgot to take back the rfged cards from game 1 xD so there he was stuck with an ivy deck lacking 15 attacks total. We psyched him with that the entire event and every event following that one.
Story number 2
On the train ride home we where playing more ufs, after the last game I felt asleep and when my friends woke me up at the endstation I was disoriented and said: "uhm my turn? where is my deck? should I make a CC?" I actually thought they had hided my deck or something just to confuse me xD
The effects of to much ufs during one weekend is hilarious indeed :S
