Dear FFG, Please Spoil Thermal Detonator

Please let it either suck, be usefull, but not spamable, or be really good and unique. I don't want more than one Ghost, just like more than one Falcon is stupid.

You mean more than 1 YT-1300 ? You really think there was only 1 produced in the whole Star Wars universe?

So Thermal Detonators is 3 points and drops/detonates like seismics. No shot of reference card, however. 3 points is expensive enough to exclude it from a lot of lists though, so that's some news.

So maybe....

Facedown damage?

2 damage to 1 ship?

Some combination of the two?

Well the Thermal Detonator is rather disappointing I think. I was hoping for a whole new mechanic.

The failure to review the bomb reference card made me face palm pretty hard...

And who ever said it is going to be a dice roll bomb...

How about 1 damage to each ship at range one then each ship (at range 1) rolls one red die and suffers any hits or crits rolled?

Just like Expose is 33% better than PtL, sure.

The Ghost expansion picture showed a bomb token showing a thermal detonator, plus several smaller round tokens, also depicting detonators. I wonder if when the thermal detonator donates at the en of the phase, it assigns one thermal detonator token to every ship at range 1. Like when Sabine attaches detonators to the bad guys' ships in the show. Then with an action or somehow else, you can make them explode at will.

The upgrade card quite clearly says that it detonates at the end of the Activation phase, just like Seismic Charges, Ion Bombs, and Proton Bombs. What we are missing is the Rules card that tells what the token does when it detonates.

The smaller tokens are almost certainly mission tokens.

I was kind of hoping for a bomb that didn't get used up after you used it, but to less effect than the seismic (like rolling 1 red and that's the damage), but sadly, it's not the case.

My guess at 3 points is a stress and a damage to everything r1. A good effect but not so insanely better than seismics to push them out of existence. Also would be the first stress bomb, an area not yet explored.

I believe this image confirms the following Wave 8 SPOILER:


Thermal Detonators: Costs 3 points, drops when you reveal your maneuver, detonates at the end of the activation phase (all this we know from the actual card being shown later in the video). When this bomb detonates, each ship at Range 1 suffers one damage and receives one stress token.


How do I know this? Well, on the back side of the Ghost rule book seen in the video, we see a mission. The mission involves setting up a bunch of tokens on obstacles. In the lower left corner, you can see that most of the tokens have a Thermal Detonator symbol on the back, while one has an image of Sabine on the back. The mission is to rescue Sabine.


After you rescue Sabine, all the obstacles that have explosives tokens on them blow up. As you can see in the area I've boxed on the top right, when they detonate, all ships at Range 1 of them suffer 1 damage and receive 1 stress token.


Also, when you pick up Sabine, she is added to your ship as a crew, along with the Thermal Detonators upgrade.


All this leads me to believe that the special Detonation rule for the scenario is exactly the same as what Thermal Detonators would normally do: deal 1 damage and 1 stress.


This makes Thermal Detonators definitely worth the 3 point cost, in my opinion, especially when combined with the Sabine crew card. The combination of auto-damage and stress is very powerful as both offensive power and control. Both swarms and aces should be scared of these things.
