Dear FFG, Please Spoil Thermal Detonator

By phild0, in X-Wing

But that rule is for the little bomb tokens used in the mission, and when they are on an obstacle. So that may account for the stress/damage output.

So the rules may not be the same for the standard play Detonator (which uses the normal seismic/ion sized token)

the one point over seismics makes it hard to find room for, though

though I am glad it's not damageless like ion bombs (so it basically had to be a point more)

good fun on Miranda, makes chasing her even more painful

and it's more thematic with my

Miranda (TLT, c3po, seismic seismic)

Warden (TLT, tactician)

Stress Y

list, which is 99 points

swap out seismic seismic for Thermal and extras; stress everywhere

Oh no, now I want that for my Bombers. Does that mean I have to get 4 Ghosts?

I'm a bit baffled they decided not to include another copy or two in the Imp Vets expansion. For an expansion which includes the Tie Bomber, the lack of bombs is a bit sad.

So true! One can just hope wave 9 includes a bomber that comes with it. And Conner Net, idealy.

To be fair, the Imp Vets expansions seems to be focused on creating a new role for the bomber, rather than expanding it's ordnance potential. It would be nice if there was another source for this bomb though.

It'll be stupid awesome on anything that can take it, especially combined with the Sabine crew. I mean, you can even put her on a Falcon to really mess with people. PS11 Thermal Detonation. Why not?

The fact that she doesn't just work with her own bombs, but with any other bomb placed on the map, opens up a lot of interesting build options.

Looks like 1 damage + 1 stress has been confirmed in the youtube comments and the Bell of Lost Souls instagram.

Please wave 9, some small (maybe big small like the K-Wing) expansion with that bomb, I need it in masses!

Edit: I mean imagine GC/LRS Concussion + EM + TD Bombers in a pack of 4! One bad step by your opponent and he has 2-4 autodamage and as much stress so clearing up won't be an issue. Potentialy on multiple ships! I am willing to give up my Homing Missiles for that.

If seismics are ever worth it then 1 point to stress everyone must certainly also be worth it.

I'm wondering if a Scum, Genius Y-wing might be a good home for these. K-turn into the opponent and drop the bomb in their face. Sure, you'll be double stressed and take a damage as well but wowzers.

There is no limit on the stress like some cards (Mara Jade).

So you can drop as many as you can have on individual ships and just spam-stress someone list/certain ship.

Yeah, the only reason I would ever run Seismics over this are if I'm really, really tight on points, or because I'm already using the upgrade elsewhere and don't want to spend $50 for an extra.

I wish this was the card that got doubled up and Reinforced Deflectors was the single. Hopefully wave 9 will add more sources.

Thermal Det + Ion Bomb = you are really really screwed. In one turn you could set a group of ships up to fly off the board if you play your cards right - especially with large based ships.

Hazaa!!!

Still hoping for Scurrg S&V heavy bomber.

Funny a grenade that does more damage than a bomb. did I miss something?

In the EU/fluff, Thermal Dets were always REALLY powerful. So maybe that's it.

Well the Thermal Detonator is rather disappointing I think. I was hoping for a whole new mechanic.

Yes, something like a remote-ignited timing of your choice thermal detonator would have been really cool.

Although stress bomb was unused design space, they again (like concussion vs assault missiles), have strange namings. A stress bomb should have been flechette bomb. If they ever introduce a remote bomb, it will have a strange name as well, as TD name already is occupied.

Without applying logic to Star Wars... Flechettes as they stand in the real world are very much a directional weapon, insofar as they somewhat require to be propelled in along their longitudinal axis, rather than just shoved into a tube with explosives and blown every-which-way (which is much more like a frag grenade). Thermal detonator as a name is about as non-specific as you can get when describing a thing that explodes. Anything from a firecracker to a nuke is something that detonates with thermal output.

That said, I'm sure they'll come up with some sort of analogous name for a remote detonated or sticky-bomb. There's a ship named after an Earth-bound bird in that universe as it is, so why not Limpets for mines?

Logic and StarWars... :)

We have already stress inducing "flechette cannon" and "flechette torps" in this game, apart from how logical that might be, it would have been consequent. And easier as we have nowadays some 150+ upgrades, it is getting complicated to have them all straight when you play occasionally.

Thermal detonators in StarWars are already in the OT trigger controlled, and in Rebels remote controlled.

Surely they can come up with a name when needed, but it is unnecessarily complicated.

Hwk: Humans tend to (want to) sort things into patterns and boxes, it is easy to call everything remotely hawk like for "hawk". Look into earth biology non-scientific names,

often species are analogously named, although many are not related at all.

If you've got Extra Munitions, you can do it again next turn, too.

Yeah genus/species names can actually mean utterly bizarre things when translated from latin, and some of them are just phonetically silly (my favourite is the genus of fly called Pieza, who's species are Pieza Pi, Pieza Kake, and Pieza Rhea. That's a man who enjoys his job). A few are little more than poorly disguised puns (apropos: a genus of mite called Darthvaderum...).

In a way, we have flechette torpedoes (albeit rockets, commonly found in the rocket pods of Apaches) and flechette cannon (sabot shells for tanks), but I know exactly what you mean. It'd be nice if there was a commonality between some of the names and what their function is. I think ion weapons are the only one that really threads through multiple weapon types and holds onto that ethos. I wouldn't mind seeing a plasma bomb that's akin to the missile, in that it deals one damage to everyone within range one, then strips a shield. It'd build on a new plasma weapon archetype, and I like the idea - as with TDs - of a bomb doing damage, then an effect (I still think Ion Bombs missed a trick here). It gives them a lot more potential.

Umm.....I disagree with you. Long Range Scanners is going to be HUGE for low PS Tie Bombers. It will be a much better option than Guidance Chip.

Not enough points in 4 x Scimitars w/ EM, Homing Missile, and Seismic. :(

Yeah, I should have worded that better. I meant focused away from expanding ordnance in terms of no new ordnance being included in the box. LRS is a definite boost to their potency with ordnance. Imp Vets is looking at Bombers in terms of a role expansion with Shuttle, and role upgrade with LRS.
