SPOILERS: GM Comments on Day Late & Shilling Short Welcome Here

By Emirikol, in WFRP Gamemasters

I thought I'd start up this topic. GM's can share their thoughts and advice on Day late Shilling short. Advice or comments on running the scenario are welcome.

I'm prepping as I write this to run it on Saturday for my FLGS and will hopefully run it for my group sometime thereafter.

Ive read it over and its a great way to show combat and a social encounter. its easy to play in and GM for sure. Ive also read threw the adventure in the GM book....that is also very very nice...im looking forward to this weekend :). One complaint about the intro campaign is that if your players are skilled roleplayers.... they will get done with this thing in just less then an hour new roleplayers with have a longer hall.

I kind of wish that there was a more climactic ending. Basically, two fights scenes, an argument, and then... we're done. I think it might have been better if the social encounter had been placed in the middle of the two fights...

that is true....but it is a just a short intro...cant ask much

This is a short demo to display how the rules work, not an introductory adventure. It's meant to play in an hour to an hour and a half, with players who haven't player WFRP 3e before. It makes a great start of an adventure (or start of a campaign), but is by no means meant to take a lot of time or to resolve all the issues. So yeah, some combat and then some heavy roleplaying in a Social Encounter. Covers two of the big bases of the game.

Well, the whole point was to run a quick introductory game, because there's people coming in and out that want to try it. But if you think its too short, its a great way to start a new adventure. I think in the back of the day late/shilling short book, it mentions another adventure you can move into.

One thing you should note to players is that the pre-Gen characters are more advanced than starting characters. I didn't notice they were until I was showing the char-Gen process to someone and we saw that you can't re-create a 'beginning' character as powerful as the DL&SH characters.

I've read it and was very pleased in seeing how the Progress Tracker can be used in a variety of ways, in and out of combat.

For those of you who DM'ed it, do you have any comments on the Progress Tracker?

Did it increase the tension in any way (...reinforcements...getting...closer...preocupado.gif).

The progress tracker is a nice flexible tool that the GM can use for a variety of things. I used just pretty basic usages of it, barely scratching the surface of how it can be used. For example, you can have a tracker split into a T, showing two different paths that can branch off (or together). You can have 3 tokens racing against each other, representing different factions, etc. For the demo adventure specifically ... I might add a token for the rain, or the reinforcements, for example. You could also use the track for the Beastmen's morale. for the social encounter, if you wanted to be detailed, instead of a token for the group as a whole, you could have a token per player, and only advance the "group" once each player reashes specific spaces on the track. Instead of a race, have Klaus as more of a tug-of-war for his faction. He starts towards one end, and the players need to "pull" him closer to their point of view, while he convinces himself of the opposite. All sorts of fun ideas you can use a progress tracker for.

I kept it hidden in my GM area ... but I was tempted to try having it revealed at times. Partly to show how things were working rules-wise and yeah partly for the players' sense of doom.

I've decided my progress trackers will be used exclusively as red herrings. As much as I love the other aspects of the game I've never had a pacing problem when it comes to running adventures and don't think I'll make any use of this.

Other than sewing doubt and confusion into the ranks of the players.

I ran it with a girl only party who wanted, including two RPG debutantes attracted by Warhammer's shiny cards and bits. That was a great afternoon, they really enjoyed it and suprisingly (for me) they asked for more smashing encounters....

I put an introduction to the demo to put some elements linking the demo and Eye for an Eye. My adjustments to the demo :

The reiklander female roadwarden : Birgitta Tageslicht

  • 2 monthes ago, Ven Hendrick, servant of Lord Aschaffenberg, came to his old friend Ivan Tageslicht, the roadwarden PC's father, at the Red Moon Inn to ask him to secretly investigate at Grunewald because his lord master is concerned. Quickly Ivan Tageslicht sent her daughter and Kurgi, his Dwarf Slayer friend since one year, to patrol near the river. Sadly, Ivan never came back and Birgitta Tageslicht only found his father's gun in a bloodied place in the woods around Grunewald... No more clues. objective 1 : She will discover what happened somehow ! (His father is finally still alive but he will be used for the human sacrifice in Eye for an Eye)
  • So the roadwarden's daughter took his father's duty without saying it to anyone, and we stated that was not a girl's job so she disguised her as a boy. As she learned Rutger had to go protect a coach traveling from Marienburg to Ubersreik, she gave him a letter asking the Roadwarden's official administration to accept her even if she's a girl. Objective 2 : get the administration's answer.
  • Finally we decided the roadwarden was expect to reveal her love to Rutger, the roadwarden coming back from Marienburg with the coach. Objective 3 : love affair.

The High Elf Envoy, Vaerun Waveracer :

  • The elve hide his racial origin as long as she's not in a big tolerant city like Marienburg or Altdorf. She came to the Old World for a diplomatic trip, starting in Marienburg, where she made some "elf business" with the Magistrate Von Brauner and his family (leader in "ship crafting" sorry for my vocabulary). Then she went to Altdorf to visit and understand men of the Empire and finally took a boat to Reikland so she may discover where Sigmar was from and to understand the heart of the old world's men (objective 1).
  • On her way to Ubersreik on the reik river, a messenger ran to the boat and annouced her that Magistrate Von Brauner sent her an urgent package from Marienburg through a coach to the Red Moon Inn in Ubersreik (objective 2). That package was a request from the Magistrate, asking her to investigate on his son Andrea's missing in Grunewald's castle.

Ambush at Ubersreik's ferry station

Vaerun the elf arrived from the Teufel on a boat to Ubersreik as a major announced diplomat the Roadwarden and Dwarf had to protect and serve. Near the ferry station, chaos cultist followers immediatly ambushed them... With chaos stars, the elve felt in the river and the fight took over in the river Teufel. That was **** nice. Those chaos cultist were sent by Gregor Piersson, the cult leader hidden in Grunewald who knew about the elve's arrival through his cultist's web, to impeach the elve to start her investigation.

The late coach... the beastmen encounter

Evening at the Inn, then night in the Roadwarden's home to hide the elf. The day after, as the coach was late, they travel on the road to find it.... I ran the first encounter, let the storm coming during the fight. Beastmen blew the horn and the elf climbed trees and saw reinforcement (wargor) arriving from the deep forest. Rally step.

Run for your life, Klaus (and give me that package) ! the social encounter.

I ran then the Social encounter with Klaus suddenly and under pressure. That was nice. The roadwarden saved Rutger and revealed her love for him (objective completed). THey decided to run, but their party with klaus and rutger was too slow. The Elf helped them to hide deep south in the forest... Klaus gave Vaerun the package. Elf's objective 2 completed.

The Troll's slayer oath : Willingly going back to slay the wargor...

Since they were quite safe, the Dwarf Slayer was so stressed to not engage that enormous beast, as he made the slayer oath... He decided to go back and confront the Wargor. The elf and him had an argue. When the elf told the roadwarden the slayer was away, they decided to run after him and fight with him to honor his oath as Rutger and Klaus seemed to be relatively safe. The elf suddenly understood that men from the old world are not always logical but there impulsive heart is what make them stand against Evil. Elf's objective 1 completed.

to be continued...

Did the woman with the sword drink all those beers?! (sorry, should probably comment on your adventure notes too) gui%C3%B1o.gif

no worries, but the lady with the sword doesn't drink alcohol, so she drank exotic juices. Bad guess ! gui%C3%B1o.gif we all others shared those excellent french and belgian beers gran_risa.gif (the 2 axes lady, the old gun lady and I)

You may notice a custom GM screen, and a plastic box containing all cards and chits. Players also draw all their wound card and put their back in the box when they take wounds. They prefer to see a lot of cards going fewer as they lose health.
