Sansa and Lady

By Rick IsLitFam, in Rules Questions

Hello everyone,

When Sansa enters play, she comes in knelt. If you attach Lady to her--the same turn--does she then stand?

Lady reads: "Pay 1 gold to attach Lady to a different character. Then, if attached chacter is Sansa, stand her. (Limit once per phase.)"

The text does not read: "Must be moved to Sansa before she stands," but the confusion came from the word "Then."

Thanks, everyone!

Lady's full text is:

" Action: Pay 1 gold to attach Lady to a different character. Then, if attached character is Sansa Stark, stand her. (Limit once per phase.)"

That whole "Action" bit at the beginning of the ability is really important. It means that the text is not active unless you trigger the ability to use it. Just marshaling the attachment from your hand doesn't count because you are not triggering the card's ability when you marshal it. So attaching Lady to Sansa from your hand give you no opportunity to use the triggered ability to stand Sansa.

If you want Sansa to stand, you have to Marshal Lady onto a different character, then use the "move" ability to move the attachment to her. If you don't do that, you are not activating the ability at all -- let alone the "Then, stand..." part of the ability.

The text does not read: "Must be moved to Sansa before she stands," but the confusion came from the word "Then."

The above is the reason marshaling Lady onto Sansa from your hand will not stand Sansa. Generally speaking, though, the ability doesn't need to say "moving Lady to Sansa must happen in order to stand her" because of the wording of the ability. The entry on the word "Then" from the RRG (p. 21) explains it:

"The word 'Then'

If the effect text of an ability includes the word 'then,' the text preceding the word 'then' must be successfully resolved in full (i.e. the game state changes to reflect the intent of the pre-then aspect of the effect in its entirety) before the remainder of the effect described after the word 'then' can be resolved.

- If the pre-then aspect of an effect does successfully resolve in full, the resolution of the post-then aspect of the effect must also attempt to resolve.

- If the pre-then aspect of an effect does not successfully resolve in full, the post-then aspect does not attempt to resolve."

So if the pre-then portion of Lady's ability (moving the attachment from one character to another) does not happen, the post-then portion of Lady's ability (standing Sansa, if she is the attached character) cannot happen.
