Dice Rage

By manawom, in X-Wing

I have a problem .... there is the first step

I really don't drink..... I drive the speed limit.... Im usually quite a mild mannered person(outside work).

I love the game, the strategy the maneuvers, the subtelties even.

but THE DICE. I know it adds excitement and randomness to the game.... but it gets to me the randomness sometimes.

I am embarrassed by my lack of cool sometimes when the dice go crazy.... not just one roll but streaks of like 1 hit in 12 rolls of red.

I am working on it just curious how you all out there when it seems the gods of dice are against you?

Not asking to change the game ...just asking how you deal with it?

Or if there is anyone like me who wants to microwave your dice and show them to other dice to teach them what happens?

This post isn't about winning or losing. If I lose I blame my strategy in some way and figure what I did wrong not my dice.

Thanks.... I am truly embarrassed of this help.

Keep playing until your luck turns and hope you weren't in the middle of a tourney or league when it went south in the first place.

Honestly, it depends on my mood.

If I'm feeling okay, and I feel like I'm flying well, I'll try to fight through it. Just fly the best I can and wait.

If I'm just not in the mood, I'll just concede. When you fly Brobots, and roll zero evades in your first 15 green dice, you've pretty much already lost the game.

It happens with extreme rarity, but it's almost worse when the dice break ridiculously strong in my favor. You can't do anything for the other guy except try to play fast so he doesn't have to suffer. It's very bad form to suggest concession.

You just have to accept that sometimes, you'll roll five blanks on that R1 Phantom shot. It's the balance for those rolls when you naturally roll all hits and crits.

I'm still waiting for a dice fix to come out myself. Maybe in wave 9.

Start drinking?

...1 hit in 12 rolls of red...

...zero evades in your first 15 green dice...

Wow, I'd hate to play against you guys... you're FAR luckier than I am when I play X-Wing!

Honestly, it's mostly a state of mind. It happens, just take a breath and roll with it. Try to do better yourself, because the dice will do what they will. When you can look back at a game and think, "Oh, maybe if I had done X instead of Y, I wouldn't've been in a position to roll so many blanks," you'll start having more fun and enjoying better games and better dice.

Dice rolls can increase your odds of a good rage.

Rage can increase your odds of good die rolls.

Interesting...

I have shouted at my dice more than I have shouted at any inanimate objects in my life. Ask Crabbok. He's seen it. He may even have video evidence. What can I say? Six defense rolls with two evade results total can make a man do funny things.

I'm helping a local player get into the game occasionally. And the last three times I've just absolutely curbstomped her.

I feel awful doing it. I've tried playing more recklessly, and running lists I've not tried, and even helped remind her of her abilities. And her dice rolls just absolutely eat her alive.

Ultimately it's a dice game. And that's nothing I can control, be it in tournament or casual play. I've been burnt by them plenty as well.

the best thing to do is try to remember ALL the times your dice worked like magic throwing hits and crits like a champ.

It's just human nature to notice when things go wrong far more than when they go right

Couldn't agree more. I tell myself "make the dice not matter"

Yeah, I find it's not very useful to blame dice for my losses, as there's nothing I can do to change my 'luck'. It's better to look for mistakes that were made that can be improved upon, or generally try to improve your game plan to favour you more.

just remind yourself, "S**T Happens",.

oh I definitely blame other things for my winning or losing mostly my maneuvering ..... If I blamed the dice I would not get better. Its like a betrayal when I roll 20 red dice and get 3 hit/crits though..... at that moment I feel I want to just smash them into dust.

I wish I could take a moment and smash those dice and pull out another set and tell them" See that.....that's the price of failure" I know its silly but it would feel soooo good.... :)

I'm sure I'm not saying this correct but I once heard a saying.

Perfect squad

Perfect exacuation

Still a dice game

Sometimes you just have to roll with the punches and hope you come out not to banged up.

play 1 agility

use auto damage (bombs, vader, feedback...), regeneration, stress bot etc; whatever doesnt roll dice to work

accept that rolling green dice is a failure on your part and that failure, therefore, is the only possible reward

I have 18 of each color and I'm unhappy with every single one of them.

I love this thread as I have been experiencing a string of bad luck rolls in the past few weeks. There is a bonus for bad luck rolls in my league and I've been hitting all of them!

I've recently retired my pretty marbled dice I got from last year's regionals due to bad rolls. Twice in recent history I needed one more hit out of two dice to get a kill with rerolls and focus and rerolled blanks. Am I paranoid? Maybe. But I might go with the dice app in the next tourney... I seem to have better luck on Vassal than on the real tables lately anyway, so RNG might fare better for me

Laugh at them. Call them little bastards. Whatever you do, don't take them seriously. Whatever level you are playing, it's just a game of wardollies.

RoV

This may not help all the time, but on different tables and mats roll your dice a few times different ways until you find the technique that gets what you want relatively consistently.

For each material there is a way to roll.

Except smooth wood.

That's random.

All you have to do is nuke the willful little SOB's... but then you are a SOB.

I just like to keep working towards the win instead of focusing on what went bad.

It's really those from behind moments that you learn the MOST about how to win this game.

It also makes you really appreciate ships that CAN pull off "from behind" wins.

Don't be the guy who yells and throws things. That person is no fun to be around and play against. People will talk about you behind your back and how they can't stand playing you. We have one in our group and everyone comes up with every excuse not to play him.
